This Year's Model Updates:

New for 2006, the hybrid version of the Highlander pairs a gasoline-powered V6 with electric motors to improve fuel economy and acceleration.

Pros:
  • Real-world gas mileage in the 20s, terrific acceleration, smooth ride, comfortable cabin with simple controls and solid materials.
Cons:
  • Extra weight results in so-so handling, engine can be noisy, poor access to third-row seat.

  • Solid SUV & Car - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

The car is fun to drive in or out of the city. Ive driven 2000 miles and have averaged 27MPG. People that say they are getting 19MPG probably are getting 10MPG with the standard SUV. If you keep flooring it, then the big 6cyl kicks in. You have to drive smart. Great comfortable interior, power, and quiet engine. Great navigation system & love the heated seat, back room, and trunk space. I look forward to driving it everyday!

  • Great alternative in a Hybrid SUV - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Purchased this Highlander Hybrid SUV over Labor Day Weekend. Still have 1/4 tank of gas! Would have filled the CR-V twice now! Great alternative, and the look, performance and features are terrific, a great buy!

This soft hybrid is a great drive with good fuel economy. I live in the Pocono mountains of northeastern PA and do both highway and suburban driving on secondary roads and average 27 mpgs during the summer and 23.5 mpgs in the winter (the gas engine needs to cycle on for the heater). My milage would be much improved however if I didnt live in the mountains (on a recent trip to Virginia I averaged over 30 mpgs on highway and secondary road travel). The build quality is excellent (of course, it is a Toyota!) but I was not impressed with the GY Integra tires. Upgade the tires to the Goodyear Fortera and you will have a premium luxury vehicle that gets great gas milage!

  • Extremely pleased - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

We bought the Highlander Hybrid at the end of September 2005 and now have 5000 miles on it. Rides like a car, incredible power, very roomy, and environmentally friendly. As noted in other reviews, the gas mileage is not quite what is advertised, because most people who buy an SUV are not using it in real city driving. The gas engine kicks in very quickly when accelerating. Real world mileage is 24- 26 mpg combined, likely less if most of your driving is on the highway at 70 mph and more if you are in a true bumper-to-bumper city. This model is in such demand that you must pay full sticker. Our dealer wanted $2700 for the DVD navigation system, we passed.

  • A technological marvel - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

I have had this car for a year now. It is an amazing SUV. The gas mileage is simply superb and is within the EPA figures. I am getting an average of 28.0 MPG - a great relief from my Expedition. I love everything about this car.

  • I love my Hybrid Highlander - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

I love the fact that the car is so quiet you forget it is actually on. I also love that it will get amazing mileage when the a/c is off and you run it at low speeds. (This was very important during Hurricane Rita, when we simply could not buy gas anywhere and the roads were completely jammed with people trying to leave town.) It has amazing power, yet it is very earth friendly. Great combination!

  • this car is terrific - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Just drove the beast from Wisconsin to New Mexico and back ...totalled over 4200 miles for whole 5 week trip. Have not got a single complaint about this car...and I usually have a lot to say bad about things!!! This car gave me about 38 mpg in Albuquerque which is all mountain driving... up and down... stayed there five weeks.... was getting 600 miles to a 16 gallon fillup...on the highway, with the car loaded down like three pack donkeys, and passengers in the car, it drove like buttah at 90 mph...no stress, no strain whatsoever...I disagree with the Edmunds report that says when it is loaded it is cumbersome... My last car that I traded in for this one, a Lexus RX330 is nowheres as good

  • Power Without The Guilt - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

I love this vehicle. Takes off like a rocket, yet doesnt guzzle gas like its competitors. Surprisingly, my gas mileage seems to be increasing with time. And Im not alone; check out the posts in the Highlander Hybrid forum. My friend, whos 6 4", finds both the front and second row seats comfortable. Hes driven the HH on our long commutes to work, and he doesnt have any problems with the seating nor the pedal layout.

  • No Sacrifices for Efficiency - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

This hybrid performs. The HyHi has amazing acceleration and a wonderful ride. It drives and handles well and is "Green" at the same time. Nothing is sacrificed for fuel efficiency and clean air. Everyone wants to know where you plug it in... you dont plug it in anywhere, its intelligence recharges the batteries while you are driving. This is our second hybrid vehicle from Toyota and they are both fantastic.
