This Year's Model Updates:

New for 2006, the hybrid version of the Highlander pairs a gasoline-powered V6 with electric motors to improve fuel economy and acceleration.

Pros:
  • Real-world gas mileage in the 20s, terrific acceleration, smooth ride, comfortable cabin with simple controls and solid materials.
Cons:
  • Extra weight results in so-so handling, engine can be noisy, poor access to third-row seat.

Why talk the talk if you cannt walk the walk. The performance is fabulous. If your work or life style prohibits having a small car- this "muscle" hybrid is the only way to go. You can save on gas and pile your suv to the gills with stuff and still get around in rough terraine. Put your money where your mouth is.

This car has it all, including head turning looks. Its roomy and classy. I feel so special when I turn on the ignition and there is no sound of an engine starting. Everyone thinks that is so cool. Conversion from seating to increased cargo area is so simple. Everything is easy. I call our "GPS" speaker "Gypsy." My whole family now refers to her as "Gypsy." It is so fun!

In a nutshell, this Toyota is like all the others I have owned... bulletproof. It excels in every aspect except for fuel economy, which is still better than non-hybrid models. I get 25.5 mpgs in the summer and 23 mpg in the winter in mountain driving.

I bought the 2nd Hybrid Highlander available in the Houston area. Overall, I have enjoyed owning this car. It is fun to drive. The hybrid system acts like a turbo when I want to stomp on it, but gas mileage goes down to low 20s MPG. When I work at it, I can get low to mid 30s MPG. My hybrid inverter went out recently, but this has a long warranty (8 yr, 100K mi). However, the car had to be towed into the shop. The new HH has an electric vehicle mode that allows short distance driving on battery only, but I doubt if this works without the inverter. I test drove a 2008 model and it is more sluggish due to the added size/weight. I would buy the 2006 model again.

I have owned new Explorers, a Mountaineer, a Blazer, Tahoe LT, Avalanche, 2 Durangos, 2 Chrysler minivans in addition to passenger cars. The Highlander is the most fun to drive, has the best handling, the smoothest, quietest drive, the best performance and by far the best economy. My best in town mileage, 215 miles @ 35.5MPG and 31.1 for 496 miles. Since I enjoy the perky acceleration, I usually average 25 to 27 MPG in town - which, to me, is still worth the higher price of the hybrid. Highway mileage at 70 MPH usually runs 24 to 26 MPG, @65 MPH-25 to 27 MPG, @60 MPH-27 to 29 MPG, @55 MPH-29 to 31 MPG.

It is a fun SUV to drive currently with 325 mile I get 30.3 mpg. The only bad feature is the small third row seat which would be ok for young children, but not for adults. The navagation system and other updates from the original Prius for monitoring the car are so much more advanced, Including a calendar for memos etc. It is a very comforable SUV

I was extremelly disappointed with the fuel economy. I got an average of 21 mpg - way below than expected. Granted I used the air conditioning all the time as I live in Fl but I did not push the car hard. A hybrid should have better fuel economy for its price tag.

The Toyota Highlander has the highest level of quality, reliability and fit/finish of any vehicle that I have ever owned bar none. The only downside is the EPA estimated mileage. We are getting 28-29 MPG combined. That is not bad considering that the non-hybrid model that our friend owns averages about 16 MPG combined. Absolutely nothing has gone wrong with this vehicle including the GPS system.

The Highlander is comfortable, easy to get in and out of, and rides as well as my Cadillac.

  • 2006 with 92000 miles - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Bought the car with 89000 miles on it, and was wary about the battery life, but it charges up fine and runs great. You need to be careful about your focus when driving, staring at fuel economy display is riveting! The limited is equiped nicely, and the interior is layed out well. Irritating the passenger cant use the maps feature while driving. Storage is a problem relative to the seating if you are on a long trip. Took the wife and four kids to DC over Christmas, and had to invest in a car top carrier. All things considered, trip went well, and averaged aroune 23 even with the car carrier messing with aerodynamics. I would buy this car again, fun to pass up all the gas stations!!
