This Year's Model Updates:

New for 2006, the hybrid version of the Highlander pairs a gasoline-powered V6 with electric motors to improve fuel economy and acceleration.

Pros:
  • Real-world gas mileage in the 20s, terrific acceleration, smooth ride, comfortable cabin with simple controls and solid materials.
Cons:
  • Extra weight results in so-so handling, engine can be noisy, poor access to third-row seat.

I chose a hybrid because of the 70 mile commute I have to and from work. I am getting an average of 30 mpg. I chose an SUV because I have 3 kids. Yhe Highlander Hybrid has suited my needs perfectly and I am enjoying immencely. I highly reccommend it to people in my same situation.

  • No Fuel Economy Here - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Major disappointment when it comes to gas mileage. After 7,000 miles I can only average 24.8 mpg vs the 30+ stated by the dealer. This Highlander is maxed out with all the options and we love it. The navigation system is great as are the rest of the toys. Wood trim sets it off just right. Performance and handling is excellent. We were truly expecting the 30+ mpg with a hybrid and are very disappointed with this one item. Other than that, its a great little vehicle.

  • Not thrilled - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

I bought the car used with 34k on it. The mpg is not good. I get 24 to 26 and I drive very conservatively. The performance otherwise is good. It is comfortable compared to my recent CR-V, but the mpg of the CR-V was better. I drive to South Carolina regularly from PA and the mileage leaves much to be desired even at a 65 speed. Looking for something better.

  • I REALLY LIKE THIS VEHICLE... - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Its a great car... nothing bad to say about it... wish it lived up to its mileage claims a little better but it may be my fault for driving with a little bit of a lead foot too...l Ioved it in winter on ice and snow... it saved my life with its nonslip feature at least twice this winter when the wheels just spun out and then the car shuddered and the darn thing righted itself and I didnt go into the ditch after all!!!

  • Fun to drive - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Surprisingly powerful and quiet. This Highlander is my 2nd Hybrid (03 Civic was first). The vehicle meets my satisfaction. It is extremely quiet and has the feel of a luxury SUV. Gas mileage isnt overly impressive, but it is better than a traditional SUV. If you are looking for a well built vehicle with integrated technology, this is the SUV for you. With respect to value, the extra cost associated with hybrid technology does not compensate for the saved fuel cost at this time. I imagine this product line is a cash cow for Toyota. Still I enjoy the technology and am happy with the unique aspects of this Highlander.

  • Too Little of a good thing - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

I went to test drive the Hybrid Highlander, all the glowing reviews are well deserved. It was a little creepy sitting at a stoplight with a silent engine. Overall the Highlander hybrid is a very well built car. However, I am six foot four and the leg room in the drivers side is too small. I kept hitting my shin on the emergency brake pedal. Therefore, I deferred my purchase until the time Toyota is considerate enough to built a hybrid for a person over five foot five.

Only have 5000 miles, own a prius and of course mileage is better in that vehicle, but the room and solid ride is very comfortable .

  • Disappointed - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

This car wasnt great. It is one of the first hybrid models out there and we bought this car new and it has about 50K on it now. Weve had some pricey problems with it though. At times it wont start and have had many recalls on it for steering! And if you spill even a little bit of water youll short out all the electronics in the car!!!! That was over $7500!!!! The car does drive pretty nice and does have a lot of power though. And I was in an accident in it and the engine did shift but luckily not onto us. I personally dont think it was that safe. The car is okay but not worth the money.
