This Year's Model Updates:

In an effort to better protect occupants of this lightweight economy car, Toyota makes side airbags optional for 2001. Brilliant Blue Pearl is a new color.

Pros:
  • Good gas mileage, speedy acceleration, roomy and functional interior, likely to be reliable.
Cons:
  • Cartoonish styling, dopey gauge placement, lousy handling, deceptively low base pricing.

  • Purchased my Echo new in 2001 - 2001 Toyota Echo

My Echo will be 10 years old in the Fall with 104,000 miles. I recently began looking for a new car due to age and mileage. Then I realized how much I still enjoyed the car. The car is in great shape and has only needed normal replacement items such as oil changes, tires and brakes. After evaluating the Echo I decided I am happy with what I already have. The reviews posted here made me realize with so many with higher mileage I should keep driving the Echo.

  • Love my 2001 4 door Echo - 2001 Toyota Echo

I purchased, added, this car used in August 2005. I have an Avalon so I wanted to stay with the Toyota reliability. After researching I found that owners love their Echos! I bought because of the mileage and have not been disappointed. Lowest so far is 33mpg and straight highway Ive got between 45mpg and 49mpg. It handles very smooth on the road and on long trips it has been comfortable. Obviously not as comfy as my Avalon but still ok. My wife and kids all love the car and I get compliments on it all the time. It does not feel like a typical small car on the inside. I save everytime I go to the pump. I rate buying this car as one of the smarter things I have done in a long time.

exactly the right design and function for a small town car. Not designed, nor particularly road-comfortable for long trips = over 200 miles.

  • Great little car - 2001 Toyota Echo

With gas prices close to $4 per gallon, I had to step down from my Yukon XL and wanted the most economical car I could find without going hybrid. I didnt know what an Echo was, but in my research, this car continued to show up with top ratings and top MPG. I have had the car several months and several thousand miles and the reviews were right. Gas mileage 36-38 combined driving, with interstate driving at 70 mph. I am very pleased with the car and would consider another. Better performance than a 2000 Ford Focus I also own. It is amazing what that 1.5 L engine can do with this car. I plan to keep this one for a long time.

  • Why did they stop making this? - 2001 Toyota Echo
    By -

This has been the best car I owned. I have 160,000 miles and have NEVER had a single problem. I did not need brakes until 135,000. There is no rust anywhere, and Id drive it anywhere! This car has better leg and head room than most any other car Ive sat in. Fun to drive and great mileage (>40 hwy). Great stereo too! Why did they stop making this?

  • Saving money and time - 2001 Toyota Echo

This vehicle has served my transportation needs admirably, since the first day of ownership! Maintenance and performance records have fulfilled my ideals of auto ownership frugality - in time saved and money well spent. This car has proven itself to be an adequate replacement for the Chevy Geo, which is no longer produced. I expect it to "run" for a full one hundred thousand miles + !

  • Zippy and reliable - 2001 Toyota Echo

Roomy as can be. You have to see how much interior room there really is. 40-46 MPG all the time. No A/C from the factory is bad, but is tolerable while driving. $1300 to install air is too expensive after the fact. Top reliable car rating. Lower the rear 1" and add a strut tower brace and the handling improves dramatically. Parts might be expensive because its an import, but this car will probably never need any. No service needed until 250,000 miles for the timing chain replacement! Outstanding. If it had A/C i would enjoy it better. These cars are hard to find because everyone keeps theirs. 40+ MPG is addictive .

  • 2nd best car I ever owned - 2001 Toyota Echo

I was employed with the Department of Childrens Services and had to drive a lot of miles. This car has never let me down and has never even had to have another battery.

  • ECHO Lover indeed - 2001 Toyota Echo

I currently have 149,000 miles on a 2001 model. With good tire pressure management, a clean and waxed car, and careful driving, I consistently am averaging > 47.0 mpg week in and week out during warmer weather. Im waiting for the Endo. I know Toyota will not compromise like smart did, requiring premium fuel and only publishing 40+ mpg from a 1,600 lb car. Come on Toyota! Bring me the Endo now!
