This Year's Model Updates:

Toyota has left the Echo untouched for 2002.

Pros:
  • Good gas mileage, speedy acceleration, roomy and functional interior, likely to be reliable.
Cons:
  • Cartoonish styling, annoying gauge placement, tilt-a-whirl handling, deceptively low base pricing.

  • fun to drive and fast mover - 2002 Toyota Echo

This echo is more fun to drive than my v6 2001 honda coupe. The pickup is amazing and it will leave bigger cars at the stop lights. The vtec engine has plenty of power. It handles well and rides like a jewel with no road noise. I am getting over 41 miles per gallon. It runs the 0 to 60 faster than the camry v6. Most standards rubber band at slow speeds in low or second gear.(surging). The echo is the only manual that does not rubber band.

I bought this car new back in 2002 and quite frankly it was the first foreign car Ive ever purchased. I always bought from GM, and at the time of purchase, the "Big Three" were making only gas guzzlers (the Geo Metro was phased out). So I was very apprehensive about buying foreign. Wow, my fears were unfounded. This car runs and runs and runs. Ive got 80000 miles on it and the only thing Ive done is put gas in it and change the oil every 6 months religiously. Absolutely no problems, not even a sensor light has come on. Love this car - would recommend this car to anyone - and I have, and two people have purchased this car used and they love it as well.

  • 2 door Toyota Echo 2001 - 2002 Toyota Echo

Good qualities: The 2 door Toyota Echo 2001 is a fun car to drive - it zips around, up hills even with the AC on. It also has a fantastic 3 in 1 stereo system with 6 speakers. It stands a little higher off the ground, especially for a small car, which is very helpful in this era of SUVs. I am a large person, and the Echo fits me well, with plenty of head room and no need for a seatbelt extender. I also find the dashboard set up (with the MPH in the center of the dash) to be easier to read than peering through the steering wheel, and I love all the additional spaces built in to the dash.

Spunky, very agile and fuel economy is terrific. Trunk holds a lot too.

Although this vehicles styling may be a little hard to get used to at first, I personally fell in love with it. It makes for an attractive car that doesnt look like the average cheeply made subcompact. In addition, it proves to be a reliable car that has good pick-up and is fun to drive. The only feature I wish it had was power locks, and perhaps power mirrors (which, by the way, some swear that the Echo has never come with, but were in the one that I test-drove).

  • Great for short people - 2002 Toyota Echo

I have a 2000 Echo. The interior is what sold me on the Echo. I am not quite 5ft and the placement of the gauges is very pratical. You are sitting high so no pillows for seeing over the steering wheel. Now it may not be the best car but if a low price is a priority , well it is hard to beat. It is peppy and no more than manditory maint needed

  • My Echo - 2002 Toyota Echo

What can I say? I just love my Echo! Ive never owned a car that I was so proud to drive, and this is just my third car in 25 years. Ive had her 3 years now and every day still brings joy and excitement. Although Im retired and dont put in the long miles, she still gets excellent mileage. I would highly recommend the Echo to anyone who wants a no-frills reliable, cute car. If I had to do it again, Id do it in a heartbeat. I love this car so much my sister said my idea of Heaven would be to have only Echos up there. :)

  • Cant Get Much Better - 2002 Toyota Echo

I own a business and this car has traveled over 51,000 miles in just 14 months. I have had absolutely ZERO problems! NONE! I fully expect it to go well over 200,000 miles without major problems as the Toyotas in the old days used to. 300,000 miles isnt out of the question for Toyota. I am so glad I bought this car, so glad in fact that I just bought a Toyota Takoma from the same dealer. I will NEVER own anything but a Toyota again. PERFECT CARS!

  • Great Mileage, Powerful, Unique - 2002 Toyota Echo

The engine in this car is hot. It out accelerates the Ford Focus ZX3 (130 hp engine) I used to have, and gets 38 mpg vs the 25 mpg the ZX3 automatic got. The airconditioner is plenty cold. The ride is smooth and quiet up to 80mph. The suspension is more like a sports car - compliant but firm, with grippy tires (the 175s stick pretty darn good). The only quality control issue is a tiny wind whistle on the drivers side at high speeds - otherwise, famous Toyota quality at a bargain price.

  • Outside side mirrors should be bigger - 2002 Toyota Echo
    By -

My little Echo is great, however there should be an inside control pad for the outside side mirrors. I noticed that this feature would be great as backing up or changing lanes you want to see the whole picture, the outside mirrors are small so I find that I have to look over my should a lot more especially when changing lanes. I looked into having a control pad installed and they informed me that it would cost me a bundle as they would have to redo the computer chip set and wiring.
