This Year's Model Updates:

In an effort to better protect occupants of this lightweight economy car, Toyota makes side airbags optional for 2001. Brilliant Blue Pearl is a new color.

Pros:
  • Good gas mileage, speedy acceleration, roomy and functional interior, likely to be reliable.
Cons:
  • Cartoonish styling, dopey gauge placement, lousy handling, deceptively low base pricing.

When I bought my ECHO, at first I had a few reservations. I had never owned a small car, never owned anything less than a V-8. I waw; however, plesantly surprised. The ECHO has plenty of room my me, and Ive fit up to 4 of my friends comfortably in it. As for power, it even has plenty of that.

  • LOVE our ECHO! - 2001 Toyota Echo

We purchased our 01 Echo in late September of 01 & have loved it since day one! Originally, we were looking at Camrys & Accords but didnt want to fork over $25K+ for a four door sedan. We initially purchased the ECHO because of the reasonable price ($13K) & awesome mileage, but soon fell in love with the all of the storage, cool gauges & overall reliability of the car. Weve owned it for 3+ years now & have not had it in the shop for anything other than an oil change! We always get lots of compliments and questions about it (mileage, cost, etc.) & recommend buying one to anyone who asks! We disagree with the Editors review completely & think you will love your ECHO as much as we do ours!

VERY SATISFIEED. EXCELLENT GAS MILEAGE APPROX 38/46 WITH STICK SHIFT. MOST COMFORTABLE RIDING VEHICLE I HAVE EVERY HAD. ONLY DRAWBACK IS ON THE INTERSTATE ON A WINDY DAY OR IF A BIG TRUCK PASSES ON THE INTERSTATE, ROCKS MY ECHO SOMEWHAT. GREAT DEAL.

  • Best Small Car Ever - 2001 Toyota Echo

I had always preferred large vehicles but took a chance on a small, economical commuter vehicle. It looked so ugly at first but upon getting in it, you find that it is large inside and really comfortable! And quality for an inexpensive car. I have had mine 5 years and I love it more than any other car I have ever had; its just the best car ever. I will drive it til it drives no more! A GREAT CAR! And it is actually a very good looking little car!! Wait till you get inside one and drive it. Exterior holds up well too.

Uglier than a Pontiac Aztec. But reliable, economical and fun to drive. The best use of space from any manufacturer of any small car.

I have only good things to say about this car. Excellent mileage; EPA estimates are LOW. I get 35 mpg easily. Small, but the interior is bigger than it looks. Cost only 11K brand new. Speedometer is in the middle, back windows roll all the way down (yea, thats right). I have 190K hard miles on mine, through some rough times, and its still going strong - an absolute trooper.

I was lucky enough to find a used coupe with a five speed, I was reluctant about that, but I love it and no power anything, less to break. This is as close to a poor mans sports car as you can get and given the prohibitive price of cars, and its excellent mpg its a gem and a lot of fun to drive. Also unconventional looking with a hi-tech interior design and an amazing amount of space inside. Ive added a sunroof and cruise control so I have a poor mans convertible and an additional comfort feature. Parked next to a conventional sedan, lets say a Camry, Im amazed at how big the Echo looks. Its a shame this car didnt make it, Corollas dont come in two doors and they are so boring looking.

I dont understand how anyone could put down a cars instrument panel that finally makes sense. You can see anything on the instrument panel clearly without looking away from the road at anytime! The car has plenty of headroom. I had 5 grown adults in the car and everyone was comfortable. Two of the adults were overweight. Getting in and out of the car is a breeze. The radio controls are within reach. Handling is great on normal days and controllable on windy days.

I bought my Echo, as a new car, 6 years ago. I drive 80 miles to work, 160 round trip, 6 days a week. 50,000 per year. I have logged 300,000 miles on this car. Fuel mileage is awesome. 43 in the summer, 40 in the spring and fall, 38 in the winter when its below zero. Very few repairs. Rear shocks and O2 sensor at 100,000 miles. Front brake pads at 220,000 miles. Left front wheel bearing at 260,000 miles. These are the only repairs Ive had. Still has original struts, rear brakes, etc. I am comfortable in this car. The drivers seat is worn out, but still, 3 hours a day in my Echo and I can honestly say the car is comfortable. This car still drives great. No squeaks or rattles.
