  • Great Quality Mid-size Truck - 2003 Toyota 4Runner

I have had my 2003 4runner for 11 years now with 156,000 miles and only had one major mechanical problem, which was replacement of gas tank fuel lines. Other than routine maintenance and wear and tear, the truck is great. I get really good gas mileage on the highway between 23 and 25 mpg even driving 70 mph on the hwy. In some instances I can get 27 mpg just driving 55 mph on cruise control. Hope to keep it for 300k and another 10 or 11 years. Oh yeah I use synthetic oil.

  • Has build quality diminished? - 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Just took delivery of this vehicle and found it has an annoying rattle in the sunroof headliner area. Hopefully this is fixable. Otherwise it seems very good. I like the orange guages at night but dislike the hac controls - too gimicky. I got black with the gray cladding and prefer the look with the contrasting flat gray cladding, even though Toyota is apparently not using it any longer.

  • Nice First Truck/SUV - 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Only 230 miles so far. Looks like the mileage will be in the 17/18mpg range for my mixed style. On road handling is good. Does EXTREMELY well on bigger asphalt bumps and jolts. Loads of interior room. Well designed layout. Features are great. SMOOTH AND QUIET powertrain. Accelerates as good as my car! Suprising! Shifts smooth too. Had to add a leg bolster to get a raise. Didnt realize this in test drive. My bad. Probably would not have bought. Rotten EGG smell when moderate accelerating or kick down a gear when passing. UGH. Hoping a better tank of gas fixes it! Fingers crossed!! Didnt smell it on test drive.

  • all but the brakes... - 2003 Toyota 4Runner

for all that i like about the vehicle, like its quiet, smooth ride, towing capability and offroad capability, there are are few issues im bothered with. first, the brakes seem to "stick" when letting off the pedal after a complete stop. 2 dealers ive taken it to dont think its a problem, and 1 couldnt even detect it. very annoying. second, remove the running boards, they are too low and too narrow to be anything but an obstacle. finally, the body moldings seem to collect water--im concerned that this may cause premature corrosion. bottom line: if i get the brakes fixed the overall rating will be about 9.5, if not, its an 8, at best.

  • 2003 4Runner SR5 2WD V-8 - 2003 Toyota 4Runner
    By -

Bought this vehicle over a 2003 Pilot, which was hard to find in the right color and cost $2,600 more. My drive out price w/ lighted running boards, the appearance pack., and auto-dimming rear view mirror was $28.1K. The car came with a bad tire (Michellin CrossTerrain), which was promptly replaced by the dealership, but no defects so far. For dollar for dollar, this is one of the best value vehicles in the category. Glad that I got the V-8 over V-6, as the difference in fuel economy is minimal, but the bigger engine is so quite, smooth, and powerful.

  • Disappointing Powertrain - 2003 Toyota 4Runner
    By -

I am very disappointed with my 4runner. At 3000 miles it developed a driveline vibration when it is driven between 50 and 70 mph. Toyota head office tech reps could not fix it. Between the dealer and head office I have been given the run around for 15 months. I hope they replace the truck, if not I will have sell it soon. Buyers beware...

  • Good Value - Room For Improvement - 2003 Toyota 4Runner

I have a Sport V8 4x4 Model that has the painted trim package and I replaced the white letter tires. Overall good value for $32k.

  • Good Buy - 2003 Toyota 4Runner

I decided to buy the Infinity FX 35 but then test drove the Toyota 4 Runner Limited. I was floored, the performace was very close to the Fx35 and it was a lot cheaper. Add to it the Toyota quality and you have a bombshell. Here is the deal if you can afford it buy the X5 if not then the 4 Runner is your best option. Also get the limited only if you are looking for leather seats desprately, if not then then the SR5 is a strong option.

  • Devil in the Details - 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Overall, this is a very impressive vehicle. However, I have had a recurrent front suspension squeak (traced to the body mount) that is still not fixed after 4 visits to the dealer, and I am now seeking to have the vehicle replaced with a new one with 3200 miles on the clock. I have also been bothered by a rattle in the headliner by the sunglass holder. I expected better attention to the small details by Toyota, but hopefully they will remedy the situation. I love the vehicle otherwise, Id just like to have a new one thats without the squeaks and rattles.

  • Gotta LoveToyota - 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Ive been a Toyota fan for years. Owned a 1990 Camry for 12 yrs. before I sold it to a friend and its still running great. Needless to say it wasnt hard to sell me on another Toyota. My husband is 65" so it was difficult finding a SUV that he was comfortable in. The 4 Runner fit the bill in every way. It rides like a car based SUV (even better)
