I bought my 2003 4runner in 2005, its one of the best cars Ive every bought. The ride is very comfortable and smooth theirs a lot of room in the front seat same with the back seat, its very roomy. I bought the car with about 50,000 miles on it and now theirs 130,000 miles on it. Im very happy with the gas millage, I get about 18.6 mpg. The only problems Ive had was with the back window, it went down very slowly but has started working fine now, and the driver window makes a cracking noise when i put it down, also the left and right headlights have gone out three times on me since Ive had it, but other then that the car runs perfectly! I hope to have this car another 130,000 miles!

Toyota got me back into their drivers seat with this vehicle. A former Honda, Nissan and Toyota owner (if only the Big 3 had their quality/reliability act together I would buy from them), this 4 Runner is just what this mid- life crisis ordered. On the outside, strong, sexy, classy. I love the front grill, the squared off wheel wells, its overall butch bull dog like appearance. Snowstorm here 3 weeks ago - it purred with pleasure in 4WD.

  • Not bad for a Japanese car - 2003 Toyota 4Runner

I bought one of the first 2003 4Runners, SR5 with V8, before the V6 became available. Main reason for the purchase was the great powerful V8 and silky smooth ride. I still like it, but wished I had waited a couple of years and bought a used one, since the value dropped so quickly. The car is so reliable and well built, even after almost 7 years it seems like new, so I think that picking up a decent pre-owned one seems a pretty safe bet. Anyway, the 4Runner is not for tall people and it is not the most spacious SUV out there. If you have a big family, I would go for its big brother, the Sequioa, or the Honda Pilot, if you dont need the V8 power.

I was very impressed with the ride and interior design. The v8 didnt seem all that quick, I wonder if the v6 will be enough for this heavy a truck. The plasic lower body panels of the SR5 and sport are ugly like and Avalanche. at $40k + for a Limited (the only model without the ugly plastic) it is overpriced.

  • High Expectations Shot Down - 2003 Toyota 4Runner

I was completely surprised that after 10,000 miles there were noticeable problems. The service technician misdiagnosed the problem as a bad power steering pump only to find the true problem being a bad pulley that caused the power steering problem. On the 2nd attempt to fix the problem a new ticking noise in the engine started and I am currently waiting for yet another diagnosis. I drive approx. 30,000 mi per yr, have owned this vehicle for 6 mos, and I am disappointed in these problems so early in my ownership. Luckily it’s under warranty – it is just a pain to have to be w/o a vehicle while waiting for repairs.

  • Great truck! - 2003 Toyota 4Runner

17k miles and still ticking w/ only one problem to date (moonroof rattle). Otherwise a great truck, VERY SOLID, always feel like youre in 100% control. Corners and handles like a dream especially in bad weather or rough (off-road) terrain. This truck never stumbles. Best SUV ive ever driven, previous car was a cushy Durango SLT+ and my SR5 blows it out of the water. Seats are horribly uncomfortable and if youre over 62 like me, legs will be severly punished by these park-bench feeling seats. Get a seat cushion and all is kosher.

  • Cladding, dash (odometer, TAC, etc.) - 2003 Toyota 4Runner

The design change is excellent except for the crappy cheap looking ugly pathetic cladding. The tri-circular silver dash (odometer, dash) is also a major style flaw. The gauges are smaller than the previous 4Runner edition and the orange back lighting is a joke. This is a 4Runner not a sports car. The shifter is also a sports car design, not necessary in a SUV.

  • Fun to drive!! - 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Fun to drive!! Very resonsive. Plenty of towing power even driving thru the mountains. Only negative is a rattle in the sunroof took 4 visits to the dealership to get the problem resolved.

  • Good SUV - 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Solid vehicle that has been a driven daily since purchase (along with yearly road trips from Midwest to Coastal states). Several minor issues have arisen since purchase that have been handled under warranty.

  • Love my 4 Runner - 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Interior finish of Limited leaves much to be desired. Poor lighting of controls is bad also. My SUV is trouble free. One service call for a burned out light. My Michilen tires show little wear for 70 000 miles
