Overview & Reviews
Since its debut, the Scion brand has won over many young buyers thanks to its trendy image and Toyota-backed reputation. However, one of its debut models, the entry-level xA, was pretty much a dud. Looking and feeling too much like a typical economy car, it was neither hip nor cool, and seemed out of place in the Scion lineup. Hoping to improve its fortunes, Scion replaced the xA with the more appealing xD.
The xD has some typical Scion advantages, including a lengthy list of standard equipment and an abundance of dealer-installed extras -- especially the audio options. But in terms of fuel economy, driving excitement, versatility and even style, the xD has been outclassed by newer subcompacts. It still remains an acceptable choice, but overall we think you'll find other top competitors to be more appealing.
Current Scion xD
The Scion xD is a four-door subcompact hatchback that comes in one trim level. The sole engine offering is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with variable valve timing that produces 128 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. Transmission choices include a standard five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic.
The generous standard features list includes full power accessories, remote keyless entry, air-conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, stability control, front seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Since the Scion xD caters to the youth market, it also comes with a six-speaker sound system with iPod/USB connectivity and a touchscreen interface. In lieu of factory options are plenty of dealer-installed options such as larger wheels and tires, quick-shift kits, bigger brakes, lowering springs, an exhaust system and a carbon-fiber engine cover. There are also a navigation system and a premium sound system.
On the road, the Scion xD's 128-hp engine provides fairly quick acceleration for this class. The xD also feels more substantial than one might expect, a result of the car's high beltline and heavier curb weight. However, fuel economy is only mediocre for this segment, and the interior is let down by odd center-mounted gauges, a non-telescoping steering wheel (which can make taller drivers uncomfortable) and a relatively meager amount of cargo space.
Used Scion xD
The current-generation Scion xD debuted for 2008. Stability control was optional until 2010, so used shoppers would be wise to note if an individual xD is so equipped. For 2012, Bluetooth phone and streaming audio connectivity became standard, while the following year brought a minor styling refresh. There were also various audio system upgrades made through the years (specifically in regards to radio control), but otherwise the xD has been mostly unchanged.

Just about a Perfect 10 - 2008 Scion XD
By Noel L. - November 27 - 2:43 amThis Scion brings back good memories of my first Honda CRX. And its just that, a memory. When Saab says that their cars were born from aircraft concepts, this Scion can claim the same--in spades. From the intelligence systems of the engine and brakes to the VSD option, this car screams ultra-high tech in all the right places. For all the standard features, this car is extravagant when considering the price and ownership costs to all of Europes fragile models. From fit/finish/handling and roominess to a mild carbon footprint, the xD delivers like an F-14 Tomcat. This will become the old Beetle of our generation-- vintage classy with stealth technology.

My Wife Loves It !!! - 2008 Scion XD
By Shella - November 24 - 11:50 pmI recently bought the Scion xD for my wife and all she does is talk about her car. The ride, performance, and safety features exceed my expectations. If I had an opportunity to change anything about this car, it would be to lower the road noise some. Its a little noisy on rougher roads. My wife and I are both impressed with everything else. Very happy.

Great Car - 2008 Scion XD
By Genconx - November 4 - 10:43 pmInitially at the dealership I was looking at the new Corolla XRS, but then as I was looking through the lot I saw the xD. Went and took it out for a test drive and was amazed at the power it put out for being a 1.8L. I was also amazed at the leg room that it had because I read reviews saying it was small for those with long legs. At 6ft tall I had plenty of room, and I havent even pushed it back all the way. Overall with options and everything, no other car can compete. Did I mentioned it came with a first aid kit lol.

Great Little Car - 2008 Scion XD
By FBC - October 23 - 9:53 pmLike the way the car handles on the interstate and in town. Super MPG. Wish I had purchased this car sooner.Better than the Fit and the Yaris. Nice sound system, easy to park, great acceleration when passing. I will mostly likely buy another one soon.

Incredible Mileage!! - 2008 Scion XD
By Vogl - October 20 - 6:23 pmWe love this car. We recently averaged 39.8 miles per gallon a trip through New Hampshire and got it up to 41.4 mpg at one point. The car is a great deal and has good storage space. Weve got a 11 month old son and it fits his stroller, play yard and a duffel bag for long trips. The only critique I have is that I am 6 2" tall and on long trips, the car isnt the most comfortable. Its snug in the back seat when I sit next to my sons car seat, but other than that it drives like a dream, turns on a dime and is a great buy!! Will definitely purchase Scion again!!

Who Needs a MINI Cooper? - 2009 Scion XD
By oleladyfanatic - October 10 - 8:30 pmDownsizing in this economy has become a hobby of mine. While I could easily afford my 07 MIN Cooper, I did not relish the thought of the maintenance costs once she was out of warranty. $110.00 oil changes? Ive driven both Toyotas and Hondas for the past 25 years, and wanted to once again drive "worry free". After research and test drives of every compact car on the market, I easily chose the new Xd. Amazing quality for $16,000!

Wish I Could Return it - 2008 Scion XD
By Tom Gandy - October 9 - 1:46 pmI bought this XD with the auto trans, that was the first mistake. This thing scares the heck our of me while trying to merge into 70 mph traffic. Road noise is excessive and the ride is rather bumpy. The brakes are adequate but spongy. Highway mpg is not too bad at 38 but local driving is a dismal 23 mpg. Rear passenger space is surprisingly adequate for average sized people. Rear storage space is small but this a sub compact and is to be expected. The hubcaps had to go. I bought 7 spoke wheels that look much better.

Best auto move ever - 2008 Scion XD
By chad Reznicek - September 29 - 10:40 amTraded in a 2004 4 runner due to fuel costs. Looked at the matrix but couldnt figure out what we were actually getting for the cost. My wife test drove both and loved the Xd. The test drive combined with all the standard options and the price of the Xd made it a no brainer for us over the matrix. We enjoy driving it, its no sports car but the power to MPG factor is better than expected. At 6 feet tall, I find it just a bit short on leg room but overall very comfortable. The bottom line is that for a great price we have a highly fuel efficient vehicle that looks good, is fun to drive, and loaded with creature comforts. Hated to give up the 4 runner but love what we got in return.

Love this car - 2010 Scion XD
By navigatorgal - August 28 - 5:14 amBought this new 8/10 and after all these months, I still love driving it. I get 30 MPG in the city if I dont drive like Mario Andretti. I put a nav system and heated leather seats in before I picked it up, and it is great. You can park where no SUV can park, can zip in and out of bus traffic with ease. Highly recommend this car for city driving!
