Model Overview:

Since its debut, the Scion brand has won over many young buyers thanks to its trendy image and Toyota-backed reputation. However, one of its debut models, the entry-level xA, was pretty much a dud. Looking and feeling too much like a typical economy car, it was neither hip nor cool, and seemed out of place in the Scion lineup. Hoping to improve its fortunes, Scion replaced the xA with the more appealing xD.

The xD has some typical Scion advantages, including a lengthy list of standard equipment and an abundance of dealer-installed extras -- especially the audio options. But in terms of fuel economy, driving excitement, versatility and even style, the xD has been outclassed by newer subcompacts. It still remains an acceptable choice, but overall we think you'll find other top competitors to be more appealing.

Current Scion xD
The Scion xD is a four-door subcompact hatchback that comes in one trim level. The sole engine offering is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with variable valve timing that produces 128 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. Transmission choices include a standard five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic.

The generous standard features list includes full power accessories, remote keyless entry, air-conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, stability control, front seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Since the Scion xD caters to the youth market, it also comes with a six-speaker sound system with iPod/USB connectivity and a touchscreen interface. In lieu of factory options are plenty of dealer-installed options such as larger wheels and tires, quick-shift kits, bigger brakes, lowering springs, an exhaust system and a carbon-fiber engine cover. There are also a navigation system and a premium sound system.

On the road, the Scion xD's 128-hp engine provides fairly quick acceleration for this class. The xD also feels more substantial than one might expect, a result of the car's high beltline and heavier curb weight. However, fuel economy is only mediocre for this segment, and the interior is let down by odd center-mounted gauges, a non-telescoping steering wheel (which can make taller drivers uncomfortable) and a relatively meager amount of cargo space.

Used Scion xD
The current-generation Scion xD debuted for 2008. Stability control was optional until 2010, so used shoppers would be wise to note if an individual xD is so equipped. For 2012, Bluetooth phone and streaming audio connectivity became standard, while the following year brought a minor styling refresh. There were also various audio system upgrades made through the years (specifically in regards to radio control), but otherwise the xD has been mostly unchanged.

I have had it for about a week, first tank of gas was 32.5 mpg on the first tank blended city/hwy. I downsized from an Acura TSX and while the xD isnt the same type of car, I actually prefer it when you factor in its affordability. It has enough pick-up to merge on I-95 when it is moving and keep up once you are on. I am 63" and I can sit comfortably in the backseat with the drivers seat adjusted back. I also drove the Fit Sport, and the xD feels like a much more substantial car and has much better pick-up on the road.

This vehicle is a blast to drive!! Wish the interior had more options not a big fan of black, or textured dashes. Going from a full size SUV to this was a change but I dont feel cramped in this vehicle.

Love this car, would like arm rest however. Great pickup, but find the rear window being so small, have trouble seeing cars alongside me. blind spot).Love the higher seats--easy to get in and out.Brakes are a little touchy,Overall, I enjoy riding in this car, very comfortable. Most people who see it call it "cute". Ok by me.

If your looking for a subcompact that is dependable, well built, good on gas and different, then buy this car. This is the second Scion in my family and I can tell you these cars are great deals. Get in and test drive one and see for yourself. If you want 36+ miles a gallon, all the options at one price, and a cool car to boot then buy an XD.

Im so happy I bought this car! I love it! It looks great and feels great and comes with so much fun stuff standard! I was thinking Honda Fit or Toyota Yaris, but when I saw the xD and took it for a ride, I was sold. Consumer Reports recommends the other two Scion models, and Im sure after the xD is on the road for a while, they will also add it to their recommendation list.

50ish years old, we just bought a 08 Scion xD 1/2008, love it!! Fun to drive, comfortable, getting 31.5 mpg highway, 26 avg. city/hwy. We check mileage against fillups/hand calculating, and found the on board mileage computer was pretty accurate. Lots of leg room, could use maybe another inch of headroom (for me anyway). Im 6-3", over 300lbs (of pure muscle mind you!) & am quite comfortable in it though. The automatic, shifts smoothly into gear, digital display on dash also. Engine has plenty of power, undercarriage/engine noise is quiet except when passing etc. but not that big of a deal. Can get a undercoat like Ziebarts Sound Barrier for $179 to help deaden sound.

I have only had the Xd a few days. Did a clunker trade in. Bought the Wasabi Green Release series in the manual transmission. First tank of gas averaged 37.6, mostly highway at 70-75 mph. Refueled, and then got 44 mpg at 60 mph on the highway, carrying 2 adults and 3 children. Very fun to drive, accelerates very quickly and nimble handling. Eye catching design and color. Was able to carry myself, 2 children, a dog, and a bike inside. A bit tight, but it worked. Yakima makes a roof mount bike rack for this car, and I will probably get that in the spring. So far, we are really enjoying the car.

  • This was the best gift for myself ever - 2008 Scion XD

I have had my eyes on this car for the past 3 month, I bought it home with me to many oohhhhs and aaaaahhhh from my family member. When you lay eyes on the Scion from the outside it is TINY, but when you step in its like magic the inter room is amazing! It felt like I was driving a minivan! Everything is perfect on the car. The only, and I mean the only, complaint is that there is no armrest in the front. Since I bought the car I have been looking for excuses to run errands and go to work, just anything that will let me drive the car. It is an amazing car.

  • Six months later. - 2008 Scion XD

I purchased the xD in March 2008, and have six months experience driving it. Fuel economy has been a steady 34 mpg, calculated. I have had only one incident where the Vehicle Stabilization Control system automatically worked its magic. It was during a highway run, climbing a hill during a rainstorm when traction was especially bad. The system kicked in at a time when I was unaware that I was losing traction. I maintained control with its aid, slowed down, and carried on with my trip all smoothly, safely done. This VSC is a worthwhile feature. One slight but nagging shortfall in the design of this car is the FEEL of the brakes-- they operate well, but are vague in their feel.

  • Excellent Car Especially Considering the Price - 2011 Scion XD

Weve had our xD about 1.5 years now. We traded in a Dodge Durango that was bleeding us dry. I was looking for a basic econo-box to use as a commuter vehicle. This car has far exceeded our expectations. At 15K there have been no issues, just regular oil changes and a tire rotation. We get frequent compliments on the appearance - it doesnt look like a cheap car. We average 32-33 MPG in suburban driving, but have hit 40 with careful driving on the highway!
