Model Overview:

Since its debut, the Scion brand has won over many young buyers thanks to its trendy image and Toyota-backed reputation. However, one of its debut models, the entry-level xA, was pretty much a dud. Looking and feeling too much like a typical economy car, it was neither hip nor cool, and seemed out of place in the Scion lineup. Hoping to improve its fortunes, Scion replaced the xA with the more appealing xD.

The xD has some typical Scion advantages, including a lengthy list of standard equipment and an abundance of dealer-installed extras -- especially the audio options. But in terms of fuel economy, driving excitement, versatility and even style, the xD has been outclassed by newer subcompacts. It still remains an acceptable choice, but overall we think you'll find other top competitors to be more appealing.

Current Scion xD
The Scion xD is a four-door subcompact hatchback that comes in one trim level. The sole engine offering is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with variable valve timing that produces 128 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. Transmission choices include a standard five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic.

The generous standard features list includes full power accessories, remote keyless entry, air-conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, stability control, front seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Since the Scion xD caters to the youth market, it also comes with a six-speaker sound system with iPod/USB connectivity and a touchscreen interface. In lieu of factory options are plenty of dealer-installed options such as larger wheels and tires, quick-shift kits, bigger brakes, lowering springs, an exhaust system and a carbon-fiber engine cover. There are also a navigation system and a premium sound system.

On the road, the Scion xD's 128-hp engine provides fairly quick acceleration for this class. The xD also feels more substantial than one might expect, a result of the car's high beltline and heavier curb weight. However, fuel economy is only mediocre for this segment, and the interior is let down by odd center-mounted gauges, a non-telescoping steering wheel (which can make taller drivers uncomfortable) and a relatively meager amount of cargo space.

Used Scion xD
The current-generation Scion xD debuted for 2008. Stability control was optional until 2010, so used shoppers would be wise to note if an individual xD is so equipped. For 2012, Bluetooth phone and streaming audio connectivity became standard, while the following year brought a minor styling refresh. There were also various audio system upgrades made through the years (specifically in regards to radio control), but otherwise the xD has been mostly unchanged.

  • Wifes Car But I Drive It More !! - 2008 Scion XD

Bought used fron son of a friend who was going overseas-never considered Scion, but glad we did-its a great car. We bought it just as gas was going +$4.00 so 34+MPG sold us.Small on outside, but deceptively spacious inside-X-L-NT ergonomics. Im 61"and Im comfortable driving or as passenger. Took several 500+ mile trips and no road weariness at all. 4 cyl engine has more than enough oomph for our driving style and tranny shifts smoothly. Long list of standard features(optional on most cars)was a big +.Compacts and subcompacts used to be synonymous with cheap and cramped, but in todays car market, cars in this segment are anything but. Toyota build quality and Scion pricing-cant go wrong.

  • Happy Times with My XD. - 2012 Scion XD

My great little XD now has 14,000 miles. The factory tires became very noisy, so I replaced them early on with 215/55/16 size. I couldnt ask for a better ride. The engine and transmission are more than adequate around town, and cruising on the freeway is a joy. The Corolla sourced powertrain means a carefree 200K plus miles. I should know, I traded in a Corolla that had 215,000 miles on it; started every morning without fail, and did not burn oil. I love my XD. The look is unique, the driving experience is fun.

  • Im cool at 40+ - 2008 Scion XD

I have had my Scion xD for a week now and know I made the right choice. At 41 Im cool again. I feel like a teenager again, this roomy little car is great. I love the style, love how it handles and plenty of power for a sub-compact. This is my 4th Toyota so I know it will last. The gas mileage is great and I cant believe how simple it was to buy the car. No Hassle and actually a pleasure. Crown Toyota in Ontario, CA. did a great job, thank you. It really is a fun car to drive. Very happy. GOOD JOB TOYOTA!!!...:)

I have my XD for only 3 weeks now thatÂ’s not a long time but it took me 6 months to decided on a car and boy was it the right one. ItÂ’s not a car for everyone but you have to judge your needs and figure out whatÂ’s best for you. The XD has everything I needed power on everything but the seat. ipod connection, decent power for the car it is. Looks cool and with the addition of some aftermarket products it will look great.

I have only had it for a few days but love it. I did a great deal of research (for years) before deciding on a vehicle. This one had the most to offer for the price plus the looks, cannot beat that!

  • Fantastic Little Car - 2008 Scion XD

Just a month and half and I am already seeing gas mileage close to 40 mpg. I drive 35 miles everyday and this is average between city and highway. Cant wait to stretch it on highway and see what mileage will be. This is a great car and with this kind of gas mileage it will be a great car no matter what the gas prices become.

  • Love this car - 2008 Scion XD

I have had this XD since the beginning of April. I love this car. I have the 5 speed trans and I am averaging between 37 and 39.1 mile per gallon!!! The sound sys is great, the 1.8 engine is the same as the corolla and the body style is original. I have driven a number of Toyotas rav4, corolla, camry and I still like to drive the XD over the others. I highly recommend this car.

  • Sweet Little Ride - 2009 Scion XD

Just acquired the Scion XD a week ago. The cash for clunkers program got me to looking, and I almost bought the XB, but am so glad I went with the XD... Better fuel economy, abd a much less boxy look. For a small vehicle, you dont think it is small on the inside. I went from a Tundra to this and I am really impressed. Full height front seats are a real nice feature, though an upgrade fabric would have been even sweeter. Apparently there was a mistake at the factory, cause I actually got a High-Def radio made by Alpine in my XD and yet the catalog says it is only available on the XBs as an option. The invoice shows 400 plus for the Pioneer upgrade, but I got the fully stacked Alpine.

  • Scion xD Good Choice - 2008 Scion XD
    By -

Overall I am completely satisfied with my Scion xD. I purchased a 2008 xD in May 2008 because I commute 140 miles round trip. The xD has all the air bags, ABS and cruise control standard unlike some other small cars I looked at (Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit). My commute is half open freeway and half stop and go freeway. My fuel efficiency averages 35 MPG during the summer with the AC on all the time. I expect it to go up in the fall and winter. The xD is comfortable although the seats could be a little cushier. I think the gauges are well placed. Not having an arm rest doesnt bother me. Main drawback is blocking the sun from the door window. The sun visor doesnt have an extension.

  • Ideal compact car for runabout in city - 2008 Scion XD
    By -

I live in the city and have a compact garage where only a very few cars could fit easily. With this in mind I bought the Scion xD. This little car has a "big car" feel to it, drives well, has the Toyota assured reliability. I say "Go for it!!"
