Model Overview:

Since its debut, the Scion brand has won over many young buyers thanks to its trendy image and Toyota-backed reputation. However, one of its debut models, the entry-level xA, was pretty much a dud. Looking and feeling too much like a typical economy car, it was neither hip nor cool, and seemed out of place in the Scion lineup. Hoping to improve its fortunes, Scion replaced the xA with the more appealing xD.

The xD has some typical Scion advantages, including a lengthy list of standard equipment and an abundance of dealer-installed extras -- especially the audio options. But in terms of fuel economy, driving excitement, versatility and even style, the xD has been outclassed by newer subcompacts. It still remains an acceptable choice, but overall we think you'll find other top competitors to be more appealing.

Current Scion xD
The Scion xD is a four-door subcompact hatchback that comes in one trim level. The sole engine offering is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with variable valve timing that produces 128 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. Transmission choices include a standard five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic.

The generous standard features list includes full power accessories, remote keyless entry, air-conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, stability control, front seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Since the Scion xD caters to the youth market, it also comes with a six-speaker sound system with iPod/USB connectivity and a touchscreen interface. In lieu of factory options are plenty of dealer-installed options such as larger wheels and tires, quick-shift kits, bigger brakes, lowering springs, an exhaust system and a carbon-fiber engine cover. There are also a navigation system and a premium sound system.

On the road, the Scion xD's 128-hp engine provides fairly quick acceleration for this class. The xD also feels more substantial than one might expect, a result of the car's high beltline and heavier curb weight. However, fuel economy is only mediocre for this segment, and the interior is let down by odd center-mounted gauges, a non-telescoping steering wheel (which can make taller drivers uncomfortable) and a relatively meager amount of cargo space.

Used Scion xD
The current-generation Scion xD debuted for 2008. Stability control was optional until 2010, so used shoppers would be wise to note if an individual xD is so equipped. For 2012, Bluetooth phone and streaming audio connectivity became standard, while the following year brought a minor styling refresh. There were also various audio system upgrades made through the years (specifically in regards to radio control), but otherwise the xD has been mostly unchanged.

  • Love it! - 2008 Scion XD

After considering other cars such as the Ford Escape, the Toyota Yaris, etc. We purchased this car about a week ago. I love it! It runs smooth and the added alloy wheels make it look great. I love the electronics! It gets great gas mileage.

  • Fun Urban Transportation Module - 2008 Scion XD

Love the hip modern styling. This car appears has more interior room than its outside size would allow. It is easy to park and is loads of fun to drive. The car does have a blind spot that takes getting used to. I drove a Honda Fit before purchasing my Scion XD and other than the gas mileage I have no regrets with my purchase. I recommend this car to anyone that needs a dependable well built car with great resale value. I also considered the Smart car. But after its initial reviews would much rather own a Scion XD.

  • Great car except for the ride - 2010 Scion XD
    By -

Ive had this car for two and a half months. I like most everything about it. The quality seems good. It holds a lot of stuff with the back seats folded down. The acceleration is surprisingly good, especially 0-30. The interior is comfortable. Handling is good; body lean is minimal when cornering. The only downside to this car is the ride. You dont feel the smallest bumps, but a somewhat bigger bump, like an expansion joint in pavement, is bone-jarring. Riding around in this car for more than half an hour starts to get irritating. Also be aware that the car requires the more expensive synthetic oil, but Toyota says you still have to change it every 5K miles.

  • 9 on a 1-10 scale - 2011 Scion XD

I recently purchased a new Scion XD after looking at the Ford Focus and Kia Soul. After giving it a thorough test, I have found the XD to be an excellent value for the money. It has good power for the relatively smallish engine, excellent handling (especially after installing new 17" wheels), and a relatively quiet, comfortable ride for a small car. The aspect I like most about this car is the ability to customize just about anything on it which gives me the ability to differentiate it from all the others on the road. Compared to the other two cars I test drove, the Scion fared better in power and performance to the Soul and looks, price, and customiziation to the Focus.

  • Great Car! - 2008 Scion XD

Overall this is an excellent car. Its tiny on the outside (although it looks muscular) but its really surprising how much room there is inside. Plenty of leg and head room in the front and back seats. This allows for a spirited drive and easy parking with plenty of comfort and utility. Nice compromise. Gas mileage is decent although I get better economy in my larger Corolla. The engine is nice and smooth with plenty of power, although it seems a little rough when first accelerating with the automatic. I expect amazing reliability, just like all Toyotas. Although its nice to have the aux and iPod inputs on the stereo, the sound quality is poor. Not enough mids.

  • Im in love - 2008 Scion XD

I just bought my xD two days ago and I havent even learned how to use 90% of the features and cant really rate it on reliabity, fuel consumption, etc., yet. Its fun to drive and extremely potent for its size. Leg room isnt important to me since Im 52. I really fell in love with its design. To me it doesnt look like a rhino, its a curvy cute alternative to the boxy boyish xB.

  • Air Conditioner Drains into Vehicle - 2009 Scion XD

The vehicle is made w/o a filter and debris clogged my air conditioner drain twice. $600 later times 2, Im getting rid of it. I dont care to have the condensation from the air conditioner draining on my feet!

  • Its A Winner - 2008 Scion XD

I am a visiting Nurse and am in my car all day, going from patient to patient. Needed good MPG. Looked at Versa, Fit And Suzuki SX4. It was between XD and SX4, would buy this car again tomorrow. I LOVE it. It is fun to drive, fits anywhere and has good pick-up. Agree with need to decrease road noise, wish there was an armrest, and that doors lock when car is put in gear. I get many questions and compliments on my zippy red XD.

Such a great little car...especially for the price. The gas mileage is fantastic. After 5K miles I have consistently averaged 36+ MPG with combined in city hwy/street driving. Highway mileage alone has come in as high as 42MPG. This car is fun, easy to drive-turn-park and fits me perfectly. My hubby 6 3" hubby purchased an XB and I fell in love with it with one exception...its just TOO big inside. I found myself having to reach too far for everything. But the XD has everything at perfect arms length. And the clutch is light and the manual trani is easy to shift. The only negative is that at 5K it has more "little noises" than I would have expected from a Toyota product.

  • Great replacement for 14 mpg Jeep - 2009 Scion XD
    By -

Purchased this vehicle during "Cash for Clunkers" (Thank you to all tax payers). Inside space is excellent; I am 61" and my head does not hit the roof > amazing. Got the Release 2 model in Wasabi Green > nice. Radio w/GPS, accent lights are main adds. I get about 36 mpg at 70 mph most times. Looked at Honda Fit; decided not be yet another Honda sheep.
