Model Overview:

Since its debut, the Scion brand has won over many young buyers thanks to its trendy image and Toyota-backed reputation. However, one of its debut models, the entry-level xA, was pretty much a dud. Looking and feeling too much like a typical economy car, it was neither hip nor cool, and seemed out of place in the Scion lineup. Hoping to improve its fortunes, Scion replaced the xA with the more appealing xD.

The xD has some typical Scion advantages, including a lengthy list of standard equipment and an abundance of dealer-installed extras -- especially the audio options. But in terms of fuel economy, driving excitement, versatility and even style, the xD has been outclassed by newer subcompacts. It still remains an acceptable choice, but overall we think you'll find other top competitors to be more appealing.

Current Scion xD
The Scion xD is a four-door subcompact hatchback that comes in one trim level. The sole engine offering is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with variable valve timing that produces 128 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. Transmission choices include a standard five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic.

The generous standard features list includes full power accessories, remote keyless entry, air-conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, stability control, front seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Since the Scion xD caters to the youth market, it also comes with a six-speaker sound system with iPod/USB connectivity and a touchscreen interface. In lieu of factory options are plenty of dealer-installed options such as larger wheels and tires, quick-shift kits, bigger brakes, lowering springs, an exhaust system and a carbon-fiber engine cover. There are also a navigation system and a premium sound system.

On the road, the Scion xD's 128-hp engine provides fairly quick acceleration for this class. The xD also feels more substantial than one might expect, a result of the car's high beltline and heavier curb weight. However, fuel economy is only mediocre for this segment, and the interior is let down by odd center-mounted gauges, a non-telescoping steering wheel (which can make taller drivers uncomfortable) and a relatively meager amount of cargo space.

Used Scion xD
The current-generation Scion xD debuted for 2008. Stability control was optional until 2010, so used shoppers would be wise to note if an individual xD is so equipped. For 2012, Bluetooth phone and streaming audio connectivity became standard, while the following year brought a minor styling refresh. There were also various audio system upgrades made through the years (specifically in regards to radio control), but otherwise the xD has been mostly unchanged.

  • Great Little Car - 2009 Scion XD

We bought our Scion two weeks ago and are really love it. It has more power than we need, is comfortable, build quality is superb, and gas mileage is also really good. Weve only gone through one tank of gas so the following numbers may be not be real accurate. However, the calculated mileage was 31.5 mpg while the computer average said it would be 32.9 mpg. We live in the Sierra Foothills and go up and down 1,000 to 2,000 feet and that cuts into our mileage. Our driving is probably 70% highway and 30% up and down. On the highway, I believe we are exceeding 40 mpg when "straight and level" if the computer is accurate within 2 mpg.

  • Paint an issue - 2008 Scion XD

I am so disappointed with my xD. I researched countless vehicles until I decided on the xD. Bought it last week and it already has paint chips and scratches (and I dont drive in rough areas). In fact, upon closer inspection -- dirt combined with dew is actually what is causing the scratching, while Im driving. Also has a small rust spot on the back. This car is only one week old!! Will be taking it back to the dealer tomorrow for inspection. Be warned!! I wish I stayed with Honda.

  • What a freaking fun car!!! - 2008 Scion XD

I love this car! I test drove the Yaris, the Chevy Aveo and the Corolla and then my salesperson introduced me to the Scion xD. I loved it from the moment I test drove it. I have never smiled during a test drive, but the xD just is fun! I couldnt help it. The standard upgrades like great stereo and iPod hook ups are really great. The get up and go power is much better than the other vehicles that I compared it with. Also the interior room is much more spacious. I wasnt really fond of the interior black color at first, but I have really come to like it. The standard safety features are really nice too. Also, the pure price deal makes the buying process so much easier! I love my scion!

  • Good ride without the superfluous stuff - 2009 Scion XD

Test drove Fit, Versa, Corolla, Camry, Civic. Liked the xD the best. Honda cars didnt respond well and the Versa didnt have a flat cargo space when the seats folded down. The xD responds right away when I push the gas. The manual transmission is geared better than the Fits. I dont find the dials as hard to read as others say. The actual gas mileage is always less than the electronic meter on the car tells me it is, but I still get around 35 highway (~75mph) and easily 32 mixed. At lower speeds (~65mph) on the highway Ive gotten higher. The cup holders are in weird places, usually low and not within reach without leaning. No armrest, but I dont feel like it needs one. Overall great car!

  • Not Amazing, but great little car - 2009 Scion XD

I bought a Scion because I loved our 2007 xD and have loved the Scion brand/product. Its a fun little car. Great pick-up when you need it. It gets great gas mileage - I do 50/50 city/freeway and get about 31mpg (and Im a lead footed driver). I do have to say, Im 63 & this isnt a great car for tall people (the xB would be a better choice). Havent had any issues in the year of ownership. The adjustable back seats are loved by passengers & there is actually ample leg room back there (the flat back floor helps too). Holds lots of stuff when you need it. Major complaints...cup holder placement stinks & where the heck is the armrest?! Not deal breakers for me, but my be for the heavy commuters

  • Funky stylish little car - 2008 Scion XD

My new 2008 scion hatchback is anything but boring. Great acceleration, tight turns. 16 inches wheels are making mountain dirt road fun to drive on. Stability control system is useful safety feature if you plan to take your car on a ski trip. If it is designed for young people it could be well designed to make you feel young.

  • Great Buy - Great Fuel Ecomony - 2008 Scion XD

Have had my xD for about 18 months (33,000 miles) and love it. Depending upon how you drive, youll meet or beat EPA. I drive on the slow side and have gotten 45 mpg highway more than a few times (yes 45!) even with family of 4 in the car. In summer, I regularly get 34-36 with mixed driving. The car is fun to drive and comfy for me (Im only 5 5" though). First car I ever bought new. No problems in 18 months. Tires still in good shape too. We test drove every car in this class (Nissan Versa, Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, Kia Rio, Hyndai Accent, etc..) and felt that this was the best buy and ride for the money. Standard features cant be best. Highly recommend!

  • Xd save me lots of $$$ - 2009 Scion XD
    By -

Tottally worth the money!!! I have the 2009 model, I drove to Kingsport TN from Hudson, NC...all mountain terrain and still got a whopping 33 mpg...I do have the 5speed though. I loved the way it drives and that it fills up for 40.00. I would drive my scion anywhere short distance or long distance.

  • Best in class - 2010 Scion XD
    By -

I believe this car is arguably the best in its class. It has a lot of impressive standard features, extensive customizable options, and solid safety ratings. Its efficient enough for the finance conscious buyer, and sleek enough for the young crowd. You can customize it with navigation, racing peddles, interior colored lights, XM satellite radio, etc. As far as safety, traction control and stability control come standard. The Honda Fit and Nissan Versa dont have those features. The electric steering is also very smooth. The soundsystem is sweet and comes equipped with 6 speakers, MP3/WMA capability, & an iPod/USB jack. Overall, its the coolest and most efficient car Ive owned.

  • In a double rollover! - 2009 Scion XD

T-boned (broadsided,) out of state, rolled twice, wrapped around a light pole. No broken bones! No broken windows!?!?! What a sturdy little beast.
