Model Overview:

Since its debut, the Scion brand has won over many young buyers thanks to its trendy image and Toyota-backed reputation. However, one of its debut models, the entry-level xA, was pretty much a dud. Looking and feeling too much like a typical economy car, it was neither hip nor cool, and seemed out of place in the Scion lineup. Hoping to improve its fortunes, Scion replaced the xA with the more appealing xD.

The xD has some typical Scion advantages, including a lengthy list of standard equipment and an abundance of dealer-installed extras -- especially the audio options. But in terms of fuel economy, driving excitement, versatility and even style, the xD has been outclassed by newer subcompacts. It still remains an acceptable choice, but overall we think you'll find other top competitors to be more appealing.

Current Scion xD
The Scion xD is a four-door subcompact hatchback that comes in one trim level. The sole engine offering is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with variable valve timing that produces 128 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. Transmission choices include a standard five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic.

The generous standard features list includes full power accessories, remote keyless entry, air-conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, stability control, front seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Since the Scion xD caters to the youth market, it also comes with a six-speaker sound system with iPod/USB connectivity and a touchscreen interface. In lieu of factory options are plenty of dealer-installed options such as larger wheels and tires, quick-shift kits, bigger brakes, lowering springs, an exhaust system and a carbon-fiber engine cover. There are also a navigation system and a premium sound system.

On the road, the Scion xD's 128-hp engine provides fairly quick acceleration for this class. The xD also feels more substantial than one might expect, a result of the car's high beltline and heavier curb weight. However, fuel economy is only mediocre for this segment, and the interior is let down by odd center-mounted gauges, a non-telescoping steering wheel (which can make taller drivers uncomfortable) and a relatively meager amount of cargo space.

Used Scion xD
The current-generation Scion xD debuted for 2008. Stability control was optional until 2010, so used shoppers would be wise to note if an individual xD is so equipped. For 2012, Bluetooth phone and streaming audio connectivity became standard, while the following year brought a minor styling refresh. There were also various audio system upgrades made through the years (specifically in regards to radio control), but otherwise the xD has been mostly unchanged.

  • I love my scion! - 2008 Scion XD

I initially went to dealership and was interested in a Corolla. I test drove the Scion and was immediately hooked. It handles like a dream. and its a good looking car. I filled up my tank this weekend with only $27 and it was almost on empty before that. I would buy it ALL OVER AGAIN without hesitation.

  • Went From BMW to xD & Love It - 2008 Scion XD

I traded in my 2003 BMW 325i for the xd car. At first I didnt even think much about looking at the Scion brand because it is marketed to younger people and I am a middle age mom. With my BMW I became concerned about gas mileage and upkeep costs. When it was time to trade the car in I had my mind set on a Prius but after driving the Prius I happened to look over and see an xD. The salesman was reluctant but I insisted on driving the vehicle and loved it. When I saw that it gets only about 11 mpg less than the Prius with a $10K price difference I was sold. My kids call it the Wii car which is funny. Avg 42 hwy & 35 city.

  • What A Great Car - 2009 Scion XD

It is fun to drive, gets great gas mileage (43 mpg, first fill up) and hauls my wife, two labs and groceries with no problems. Salesperson was wonderful - no surprises and all the tech info I needed. I would recommend this car and dealer to anyone wishing for max value and pleasant, safe and fun driving.

The ride to work is better now with the new scion xd. From getting 13 mpg (gmc sierra 2500) to about 34.5 mpg now. The interior room is great for my wife who is currently pregnant, and my dog who loves to move around. The handling is great but it can use improvement, that is why i plan on improving it with official scion and trd parts.

  • Fun in the New Look - 2009 Scion XD

I just bought The 2009 XD Scion. It only gets better as you drive . The Fuel Economy is superb and the Pioneer sound system rocks.I looked at the Focus. I was sold on the XD. 15,800 for a fully loaded Automatic. I was looking for a manual But the dealer with the "Fixed pricing" cut a deal for a sure sale. Im not in anyway sorry for this choice. I came out of a Sable full loaded with sound system to rock your socks off 0-60 in 5.5. For the price and performance and GAS MILEAGE,you cant go wrong. It has pep like a V-6. Test drive one before you buy. You wont be sorry .Only down fall no center arm rest. Compartments everywhere.FUN TO DRIVE.... Oh yeah I wanted a sun roof like the sable .none

  • I love my Xd:) - 2008 Scion XD

I wanted to get a car that is good on miles, reliable (I was only looking for a Japanese car), and safe. Ive researched so many cars for a few months and it was b/w Civic or Xd. I decided to buy Xd bc of its long list of standard options for this price, and was pretty much in love when I test drove one- it zips very well, inside is roomy, and I actually like its cute looks! Ive only put 200 miles on, and still have a half gas tank! I got close to 42 miles on highway, and Im getting about 31.5 miles in a city drive, with A/C on most of the time(the weakest level though). Ill get 18 inch wheels that makes the car look a lot better. I would buy one again, I love it!

  • Overpriced for what you get - 2008 Scion XD

My wife bought this monday. Over all it is not a bad car but dealing with Scion dealers left a bad taste in our mouth. Scion likes to claim they have a "Pure Price" that is set by Scion but the dealers pile on doc fees and every other fee you can think of. But that is enough about the horrible dealers and lets talk about the xD. The car itself is very small. It is basicly a four door toyota yaris but it does have side airbags standard and in this car you will need them in a T bone crash. My wife thought the ride of the car was ok but to me it felt just like the old scion xA which was bumpy and cheap feeling. The car has about 23 more hp than the xA but on the road you cannot feel it.

  • I like it - 2008 Scion XD

Wife and I test drove corolla, yaris, civic, fit, suzuki. The xD had the best drivers seat for my 210 lbs. The interior did not feel cheap like the other cars did. Did not even look at the scion brand, untill salesman pointed out the new xD, at first I did not like it. It looked tiny from the outside, however after riding in the back and then driving the xD my opinion completely changed. Wife and I bought the black xD. First tank of gas mpg 41, we live in a rural area 50 mph highway, pacific northwest area.

  • A Scion of the times. - 2008 Scion XD
    By -

I bought the Scion xD after driving the xA from an ebay sale, downsizing from a pickup truck which i can no longer afford to drive. After two weeks of both highway and around town driving, I find the xD to be fun to drive, comfortable and very economical (35+ combined mpg.) Although you wont win any drag races in a Scion, it will zoom up to highway speeds quickly enough where it floats effortlessly at 75+ mph. Handling and cornering are excellent and the seats are firm and supportive. In spite of its size the xD drives like a larger vehicle. Fold the seats down and theres plenty of room for your stuff. It was a great choice. Im going to keep it.
