Model Overview:

Since its debut, the Scion brand has won over many young buyers thanks to its trendy image and Toyota-backed reputation. However, one of its debut models, the entry-level xA, was pretty much a dud. Looking and feeling too much like a typical economy car, it was neither hip nor cool, and seemed out of place in the Scion lineup. Hoping to improve its fortunes, Scion replaced the xA with the more appealing xD.

The xD has some typical Scion advantages, including a lengthy list of standard equipment and an abundance of dealer-installed extras -- especially the audio options. But in terms of fuel economy, driving excitement, versatility and even style, the xD has been outclassed by newer subcompacts. It still remains an acceptable choice, but overall we think you'll find other top competitors to be more appealing.

Current Scion xD
The Scion xD is a four-door subcompact hatchback that comes in one trim level. The sole engine offering is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with variable valve timing that produces 128 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. Transmission choices include a standard five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic.

The generous standard features list includes full power accessories, remote keyless entry, air-conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, stability control, front seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Since the Scion xD caters to the youth market, it also comes with a six-speaker sound system with iPod/USB connectivity and a touchscreen interface. In lieu of factory options are plenty of dealer-installed options such as larger wheels and tires, quick-shift kits, bigger brakes, lowering springs, an exhaust system and a carbon-fiber engine cover. There are also a navigation system and a premium sound system.

On the road, the Scion xD's 128-hp engine provides fairly quick acceleration for this class. The xD also feels more substantial than one might expect, a result of the car's high beltline and heavier curb weight. However, fuel economy is only mediocre for this segment, and the interior is let down by odd center-mounted gauges, a non-telescoping steering wheel (which can make taller drivers uncomfortable) and a relatively meager amount of cargo space.

Used Scion xD
The current-generation Scion xD debuted for 2008. Stability control was optional until 2010, so used shoppers would be wise to note if an individual xD is so equipped. For 2012, Bluetooth phone and streaming audio connectivity became standard, while the following year brought a minor styling refresh. There were also various audio system upgrades made through the years (specifically in regards to radio control), but otherwise the xD has been mostly unchanged.

I picked up the Xd last month after the rising price in gas was making it impossible for me to keep my old vehicle. Went from a Nissan Titan to the Xd and I couldnt be happier. Its so fun to drive. Very sporty and nimble. Lots of get up and go for such a small engine. I was pleasantly surprised at how much room it has inside too. Im 62" and fit in it with no problems at all. When I first purchased it, all I could think about was how much I was going to miss driving my truck. Now, much to my surprise, I enjoy driving the Scion more than I did my Titan. And the mileage is great. So far the lowest tank Ive had has been 35 MPG and I have a tendency to keep my foot in it a lot. Very pleased.

I had to go looking for another car after i was in a car accident in my former scion xA (hydroplaned at 60 mph, hit a guardrail and flipped over, yet walked away without a scratch), so i wanted another car that was safe, and reliable, and still had great gas mileage. well the xD was the perfect car for driving and style. Its different and you almost never see another one on the road, i average 37- 40 mpg depending on where Im driving, its extremely easy to move in and out of traffic due to its small design, and its extremely safe crash test ratings and standard side airbags set my mind at ease. I will be keeping this car for a long time.

Just traded in my Chevy Colorado extended cab for a xD this weekend and Im so glad we did. My wife and I share a vehicle, she loves our new xD way more than my old truck. Its fun to drive, handles like a sports car, looks great! I drove my wife crazy this weekend asking to go for drives around town!

  • Good Economy Car for Rural Area - 2008 Scion XD
    By -

I live in the northern mountains of NH; my driving is mostly rural, seldom faster than 65; there is virtually no stop-and-go traffic. My xD has an automatic and also traction/stability control. My lowest gas mileage has been 37; my highest 40.5. (I figure my MPG mechanically: first click off on fill up with rounding to nearest nickel.) My last three tanks averaged 39 mpg.

  • Great MPG & fun to drive! - 2008 Scion XD

This is one great car to drive! Plenty of power and Im getting 32 MPG in suburban driving. The kids fit great in the back, even w/car seats and the cargo area can hold a packed ice hockey bag w/o a problem.

  • Tire Size is impossible! - 2010 Scion XD
    By -

Sold a BMW Z3 during tough financial times and I love my little Scion. However, yesterday (before a major holiday) I was stranded in the California desert. I do not blame Toyota for my flat tire. But the tire on the xD DOES NOT EXIST anywhere. I put $60 on my cell phone - "411" charges for calling every Costco, Sams Club, Pep Boys, and WalMart in the hugely populated areas of Riverside and Orange Counties. Had I checked into a hotel to await the arrival of a tire, 5 days. I ended up w/ a tire one size up just to get me home. My Toyota dealership and I will be having a discussion this week. Should they choose to do nothing, I will contact my local consumer media.

  • Better then a Mini Cooper - 2009 Scion XD
    By -

Having been a former owner of a Mini Cooper, I can tell you that this car is a much better car. While it may not corner quite as well as the Mini (that can be fixed with the addition of the TRD lowering springs, a dealer installed option) It is none the less equally fun to drive. It has more HP stock then a Mini Cooper (not S of course). The styling is unique, just the right amount of funkyness to get you noticed. The cabin is more spacious, and their is definitely more storage then a Mini. Plus, the standard factory installed Pioneer ipod control rocks (an expensive Mini option). The rear seats fit two adults comfortably, and Im averaging over 35 mpg! Bottom line, best value for the money!

I debated which to buy, the Honda Fit or the Scion XD. I decided that I liked the body style better with the XD, I also liked the larger wheels which came standard on the XD (16" as opposed to the Honda Fit 14"). I am so happy with the XD. I drive 150 miles a day to/from work so I log a lot of miles quickly. I am now up to 11,800 miles and have not had a problem. It is comfortable and roomy for 4 adults. We recently took it from Ann Arbor to Chicago for a soccer tournament and had plenty of room for all four adults, we just made sure to pack lightly as there is not a lot of room for numerous suitcases but then again that is not what I bought it for. I highly recommend this car.

  • I love this car! - 2008 Scion XD

I got my xD for a long commute - I drive 1000 miles a week on average. My gas mileage is consistently 35+ mpg on the highway, 32-34 overall. Its a little noisy, but responsive and smooth. Its cute as anything; people are always turning to check out my car! Ive never owned a hip car before. A little more cargo space would be nice. The stereo controls are great, and I love that cruise control comes standard. I wish the fuel gauge was a little more attention-getting. Sometimes I dont notice that Im low on gas until its been flashing for a while; its not very bright. I actually ran out of gas on my first tank... then again, I should pay more attention!
