Model Overview:

Since its debut, the Scion brand has won over many young buyers thanks to its trendy image and Toyota-backed reputation. However, one of its debut models, the entry-level xA, was pretty much a dud. Looking and feeling too much like a typical economy car, it was neither hip nor cool, and seemed out of place in the Scion lineup. Hoping to improve its fortunes, Scion replaced the xA with the more appealing xD.

The xD has some typical Scion advantages, including a lengthy list of standard equipment and an abundance of dealer-installed extras -- especially the audio options. But in terms of fuel economy, driving excitement, versatility and even style, the xD has been outclassed by newer subcompacts. It still remains an acceptable choice, but overall we think you'll find other top competitors to be more appealing.

Current Scion xD
The Scion xD is a four-door subcompact hatchback that comes in one trim level. The sole engine offering is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with variable valve timing that produces 128 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. Transmission choices include a standard five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic.

The generous standard features list includes full power accessories, remote keyless entry, air-conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, stability control, front seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Since the Scion xD caters to the youth market, it also comes with a six-speaker sound system with iPod/USB connectivity and a touchscreen interface. In lieu of factory options are plenty of dealer-installed options such as larger wheels and tires, quick-shift kits, bigger brakes, lowering springs, an exhaust system and a carbon-fiber engine cover. There are also a navigation system and a premium sound system.

On the road, the Scion xD's 128-hp engine provides fairly quick acceleration for this class. The xD also feels more substantial than one might expect, a result of the car's high beltline and heavier curb weight. However, fuel economy is only mediocre for this segment, and the interior is let down by odd center-mounted gauges, a non-telescoping steering wheel (which can make taller drivers uncomfortable) and a relatively meager amount of cargo space.

Used Scion xD
The current-generation Scion xD debuted for 2008. Stability control was optional until 2010, so used shoppers would be wise to note if an individual xD is so equipped. For 2012, Bluetooth phone and streaming audio connectivity became standard, while the following year brought a minor styling refresh. There were also various audio system upgrades made through the years (specifically in regards to radio control), but otherwise the xD has been mostly unchanged.

  • Xa to Xd - 2008 Scion XD
    By -

Long time Honda owner (no mas) change to Toyota/Scion and happy. Many Civics, Accords, CRV, never again. Anyway, I traded in the new to me 06 Xa which was a fantastic car, just wanted to upgrade and that is what I feel like the Xd is. I drive fast on the freeway and in traffic and this car is as stated, feels more substantial, less darty, more powerful. Inside the console is ergonomic, there are a lot more standard features and I am 510" 200 lbs and no problem with room. In short, I believe the Xd is a great replacement for the Xa and I really enjoyed my Xa, half of the miles where on the open highway, the other half in Phoenix, the city of bad drivers...

  • I love this car! - 2008 Scion XD

I did a lot of research, including going to the auto show to compare the competition - the Golf, the Versa, the Mini, the Yaris, and the Matrix. I was stunned when I found out almost everything comes standard on the car - its a lot of car for the price, and it beat the competition by leaps and bounds! I also love how you sit high in the car while driving. It feels like driving a baby SUV. No buyer remorse here - this car is fantastic!

  • Small Car With Great Versatility - 2014 Scion XD

For my purposes this car is perfect. Occasional back-seat passengers can be accommodating by slight adjustment of the front seats. Normally used for a driver and passenger, this car is perfect. Day to day the cargo space with back seats up accomodates groceries or whatever. In the spring, with seats folded down, it handily loads my mulch, garden soil, plants, etc. Im very disappointed that this car is no longer manufactured.

  • Love my xD - 2008 Scion XD

Bought this car after researching most of the models in this size. Three things sold me: 1) Long list of standard features, 2) It is a Toyota, 3) Great looking. The only option that I purchased was the floor-mats. So far I am getting 30 mpg back and forth to work and 39 mpg on trips. My family of four takes this car everywhere. There is plenty of leg room all around and it is very comfortable to drive and ride in. We are actually considering replacing my wifes car with an xD. We also like that it feels a bit like driving a sports car. The dealer experience was great with Scions Pure Price. Finally seeing other xDs on the road, but now I am not quite as unique!

  • Its OK, but Caution Advised... - 2008 Scion XD
    By -

Price was OK, but I might not buy it again. Screw went into tire sidewall in July 08, but no tire dealer had the odd ball size--took a week to order. Radio doesnt receive my favorite stations (90 Nissan did perfectly). Owners manual says to use only 0w-20 oil (or 5w-20), but Castrol wont sell it to consumers; my favorite auto shop doesnt buy it in bulk. Very noisy ride--so much so that dog doesnt like it. Doors seem to lock mysteriously, with no door key/lock on passenger side--have to go around. Dash gauges can be seen only by pushing button--not safe to do while driving--odometer should always be visible.

  • Paint problem - 2009 Scion XD
    By -

We love the car so far technically. We are having problems with the paint (nautical blue). It scratches at the touch of a finger and it looks dimpled. We are wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem. We have had the car for only 1 month and it gets worse and worse as the days go by. There also is a spot of discoloration in the front right panel of the car.

  • A Blast to drive - 2010 Scion XD
    By -

I have just over 1,000 miles on my new ride. It has been great to drive, it is a zippy little car, with good handling. I have averaged 30-31mpg with mixed driving, better than the stated average of 29 mpgs. I like that even the base xD is quite loaded.

  • Owned mine for awhile... - 2009 Scion XD
    By -

I havent seen anyone review whos owned their xD for a while. I bought mine brand new in December 2008. (I remember some of the reviews I see here from my research!) I test drove both the xD and the Honda Fit the same day. I was not impressed with the Fit, and fell in love with the xD after I made a right hand turn out of the dealership-the car takes turns beautifully. Since then, the performance has remained steady-surviving long trips and daily commutes. Its run excellently and has only had oil changes thus far. I just had my first problem today-the car wouldnt start-going into the dealership tomorrow. I wish it did a little better in snow/ice-its kind of wimpy. Otherwise, love.

  • Best Kept Secret - 2008 Scion XD
    By -

Next week, I will have had my Xd for 6 months and have seen only one other, so hence my choice of title. I traded an 01 Highlander and think this is a better vehicle when considering everything; styling, ride, comfort, gas mileage, etc. Also I think it is better than my 98 Landcruiser and my 95 4Runner, all things considered. I have had people quiz me about it and everyone loves it. Why doesnt Scion push this vehicle? When I tell people I have an Xd they assume it is an Xb. Nobody has heard of it. Also, Toyota is bringing out a vehicle called the Urban Cruiser, currently only for Europe. Guess What? It is a 4-wheel drive Xd! Buy this car---youll love it

  • What fun! - 2008 Scion XD
    By -

This is a great, funky car. Because of the driver position I feel like Im driving an SUV, but it handles like a sporty little car! Plenty of room for passengers. Has great pickup when you need to accelerate fast. Good gas mileage for a non-hybrid vehicle (averaging 33 MPG and I drive mostly city).
