Model Overview:

Since its debut, the Scion brand has won over many young buyers thanks to its trendy image and Toyota-backed reputation. However, one of its debut models, the entry-level xA, was pretty much a dud. Looking and feeling too much like a typical economy car, it was neither hip nor cool, and seemed out of place in the Scion lineup. Hoping to improve its fortunes, Scion replaced the xA with the more appealing xD.

The xD has some typical Scion advantages, including a lengthy list of standard equipment and an abundance of dealer-installed extras -- especially the audio options. But in terms of fuel economy, driving excitement, versatility and even style, the xD has been outclassed by newer subcompacts. It still remains an acceptable choice, but overall we think you'll find other top competitors to be more appealing.

Current Scion xD
The Scion xD is a four-door subcompact hatchback that comes in one trim level. The sole engine offering is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with variable valve timing that produces 128 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. Transmission choices include a standard five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic.

The generous standard features list includes full power accessories, remote keyless entry, air-conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, stability control, front seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Since the Scion xD caters to the youth market, it also comes with a six-speaker sound system with iPod/USB connectivity and a touchscreen interface. In lieu of factory options are plenty of dealer-installed options such as larger wheels and tires, quick-shift kits, bigger brakes, lowering springs, an exhaust system and a carbon-fiber engine cover. There are also a navigation system and a premium sound system.

On the road, the Scion xD's 128-hp engine provides fairly quick acceleration for this class. The xD also feels more substantial than one might expect, a result of the car's high beltline and heavier curb weight. However, fuel economy is only mediocre for this segment, and the interior is let down by odd center-mounted gauges, a non-telescoping steering wheel (which can make taller drivers uncomfortable) and a relatively meager amount of cargo space.

Used Scion xD
The current-generation Scion xD debuted for 2008. Stability control was optional until 2010, so used shoppers would be wise to note if an individual xD is so equipped. For 2012, Bluetooth phone and streaming audio connectivity became standard, while the following year brought a minor styling refresh. There were also various audio system upgrades made through the years (specifically in regards to radio control), but otherwise the xD has been mostly unchanged.

I love this new Scion. So much fun to drive. The handling is ok and the performance is fast and smooth. Like most small cars, space is a problem as there isnt much room in the backseat. I just wish that the trunk was enlarged also. The left/right turn signal on the side mirrors was a cool design; a copy design from Mercedes.

All cars should be fun to drive, easy on gas, accommodate my iPod and have airbags all around. The Scion xD is a great value when you shop it against the main competitors here on Edmunds. Just be sure to add all the extras to the other cars because the Scion xD gives us a lot for our money. If it does as well as the xA the dealer says it will be in the top 10 for resale value. And that is for ALL passenger cars. Toyota makes it. The dealers sell it without hassling you or lying, and people love it everywhere we go. If youre looking for a great car for not a lot of money, you should check the xD out.

My last car was the xA and I was totally happy with it. When I first heard the xA would be replaced, I was really annoyed. But then I test drove the xD and I was sold on it immediately. Its a definite upgrade. I love the xDs power, and it feels safer to me. I drive a lot of highways on my daily commute. Its a great feeling that can keep up with everyone else on the road and do it safely. My only wish is 16" alloy wheels. Will they ever be available?

  • Love my first Auto Car - 2008 Scion XD

I have had my Scion XD for 7 months now and I love it. It is my first new and auto transmission. I live in the DC/Baltimore area and this car make commuting easy and comfortable. Fast pick up allows for easier merging onto highways. I had been looking into purchasing the XA, but am very happy I waited for the XD. It practically parks itself. After spending 9 years driving nothing but Manual, I am still getting used the the auto transmission. It is a wonderful car for those that love to save on gas mileage.

I LOVE my new peppy xD! Im impressed with this small bundle of energy and very pleased that I didnt go with the Honda Fit or the Toyota Matrix. The xD comes standard with lots of features and the only extra added was an alarm. Everyone who has ridden in it has fallen in love. A terrific buy so far!

I have only had my Scion since April but after 4000 miles Im still enjoying every minute of it. I was looking for a good quality small car for a decent price how could you go wrong with a product of toyota. I am planning on owning this vehicle for a long time I hope the brand holds up to its reputation.

  • NO - 2010 Scion XD

Im going to go with no. I leased this car NEW in 2011 and have had nothing but problems. Since February of 2011 Ive had 3 batteries, 2 leaking A/C lines replaced, and now my CD player is eating my CDs. And like another reviewer said, my brakes suck. They have been very slow to respond since I got the car. I have had my car in the shop at least 4 times this year. Im glad its a lease and that Toyota is so awesome that they are letting me out of my lease early without penalties since this car is a pos. It is really cute on the outside, but the mechanics (which is the most important part of the car) suck. I only have 15,000 miles on it which is really sad because it runs like it has 45,000.

Bought second hand w/40000 miles. Short wheel base gives bumpy ride on wash-board roads. Should improve shocks and suspension. Had one questionable acceleration under damp/rainy conditions.

  • A True Winner! - 2009 Scion XD

Test drove a leftover 08 Mazda3 and frankly found it kind of boring to drive. The Toyota dealership was right next door so I ran over and test drove the xD and found it much more fun, plus it had just as many features and better gas mileage... and less expensive! A great car is when the more you drive it, the more you like it, and this is one of those type of vehicles. Toyota has figured this out and they seem to know what the customer likes and how to deliver it. I just cant believe how solid this thing is built for the price. Not to mention it looks good, too. This is my first Toyota and I doubt itll be my last.

Ive had it for a while and Id have to say, its a great cheap car. I just took a trip and managed 42 mpg on the highway while around town Im getting about 32 mpg. It has some power if you get on it but the manual transmission is awful. The Interior is awesome as well as the body design, and people are always checking it out on the street.
