Model Overview:

Since its debut, the Scion brand has won over many young buyers thanks to its trendy image and Toyota-backed reputation. However, one of its debut models, the entry-level xA, was pretty much a dud. Looking and feeling too much like a typical economy car, it was neither hip nor cool, and seemed out of place in the Scion lineup. Hoping to improve its fortunes, Scion replaced the xA with the more appealing xD.

The xD has some typical Scion advantages, including a lengthy list of standard equipment and an abundance of dealer-installed extras -- especially the audio options. But in terms of fuel economy, driving excitement, versatility and even style, the xD has been outclassed by newer subcompacts. It still remains an acceptable choice, but overall we think you'll find other top competitors to be more appealing.

Current Scion xD
The Scion xD is a four-door subcompact hatchback that comes in one trim level. The sole engine offering is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with variable valve timing that produces 128 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. Transmission choices include a standard five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic.

The generous standard features list includes full power accessories, remote keyless entry, air-conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, stability control, front seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Since the Scion xD caters to the youth market, it also comes with a six-speaker sound system with iPod/USB connectivity and a touchscreen interface. In lieu of factory options are plenty of dealer-installed options such as larger wheels and tires, quick-shift kits, bigger brakes, lowering springs, an exhaust system and a carbon-fiber engine cover. There are also a navigation system and a premium sound system.

On the road, the Scion xD's 128-hp engine provides fairly quick acceleration for this class. The xD also feels more substantial than one might expect, a result of the car's high beltline and heavier curb weight. However, fuel economy is only mediocre for this segment, and the interior is let down by odd center-mounted gauges, a non-telescoping steering wheel (which can make taller drivers uncomfortable) and a relatively meager amount of cargo space.

Used Scion xD
The current-generation Scion xD debuted for 2008. Stability control was optional until 2010, so used shoppers would be wise to note if an individual xD is so equipped. For 2012, Bluetooth phone and streaming audio connectivity became standard, while the following year brought a minor styling refresh. There were also various audio system upgrades made through the years (specifically in regards to radio control), but otherwise the xD has been mostly unchanged.

  • Love my little white xD! - 2008 Scion XD

I had seen my first xD about a year before I bought mine. I was hooked from that point on. I looked at other cars- just to be sure-but always came back to the xD. Had to wait a few days to get my white manual, but it was worth it. I love driving it...it zips everywhere...and I love to brag about the gas mileage to my gas hog driving friends. It is just too cute.

  • Nice car with a few quirks - 2008 Scion XD

This car is overall a great car to have. It gets good fuel economy, and has enough pick-up to get up to speed on the highway. The small design allows this car to be navigated through the tightest of spaces, while the height that you ride at almost makes you feel like you are riding in a SUV or a crossover. You do get looks driving in this car, I had a guy in an Acura looking up and down the side of it trying to figure out what I was driving!

  • Alright, but I wouldnt buy it again! - 2008 Scion XD

Okay, its a fun car to drive, gets you lots of questions/stares,so if you want attention great,if not move on. Best mileage about 29mpg, not bad/but not great. Brakes are poor at best, and I slide all over in the winter (illinois) and good luck getting snow tires, almost no one has them!!! and when you do find them,a single new tire can run you $150, yikes! Paint is weak/scratches easily. Must say lift back is great, can really get a ton of stuff in w/seats folded flat (got a recliner in there)but overall, cars just okay! No major mechanical issues, but road noise, lots of rattles, brakes and traction lacking! Oh,and sooooo not a green little car, same emissions as HUMMER, wish id known.

  • Great car - 2010 Scion XD

I have 5000 miles on my 2010 Scion XD and its a great car, it can handle 4 large people with ease, I am getting average fuel mileage(city and highway) of 39.5 and it handles cargo like a pro, I have been able to fit all the equipment for my job into this vehicle that I was using a Plymouth grand voyager for. Its fun to drive, has great performance, and its cornering is great like little or no body roll and very tight steering control. It gives me great confidence that I can maneuver it in any situation that arises with safety. So far nothing has gone wrong, car works perfectly.

  • Fun little car. - 2009 Scion XD

Bought it as a replacement for my wifes Olsmobile Alero. This really is a great little car. Lots of pep, the handling is great, gas mileage is phenomenal, features are fantastic, and it looks like a little monster in a good way. I researched these small style cars for about two months now and it came down to a toss up between the Honda Fit Sport and the xD. Thankfully the xD comes in one base model and comes fully loaded vs the Fit, which you have to spend the extra cash for the Sport to get the same features. Granted the Fit has a little more cargo space, but for price (Pure Pricing), reliability, style, features and peppier engine, xD all the way. No regrets, we love this car.

  • Everyday I love it just a lil bit more! - 2009 Scion XD

Ive had the xd since 11/08 and its just great. So many standard features that you would have to pay extra for in other cars. MPG is outstanding I drive 100 miles to and from school twice a week and it barely dents my gas tank. So many cool features, high tech, great cargo, eco friendly, Love the interior design. Def beats other hatchbacks in its class. Its zippy, roomy, great lil compartments here and there, secret lil luggage holder in cargo area, adjustable back seats that also fold down individually, passenger seat folds down. audio control from the steering, ipod jack. everything you need and want is standard.

My prior car was the Toyota Echo, and while i have lost out in gas mileage, ive made up in comfort and fun. If i had to make the decision again, even 7 months later i wouldnt hesitate. I love this car.

  • Scion xD - Impressive little hatchback - 2008 Scion XD

Ill admit it. I didnt want to look inside this vehicle. However, I bought one. I started by looking at small, affordable econosized cars. I test drove Mazda3 hatchback, Honda Fit and Civic, Toyota Yaris, Corolla (CE, LE, SE) and Matrix. Scion xD offers a smooth ride that picks up nicely and gets you to where you need to go. Its a true city car. Small, compact, affordable and gas economical. Excellent gas ratings (>35mpg), is comfortable in the inside, and is extremely user-friendly. The seats fold down flat in the back. It can haul a ton of stuff; or seat 5 (normal weight) persons very comfortably. Car feels "euro" designed. Its an urbanized car that can get around a city easily.

I have really enjoyed driving this car. The drivers seat couldnt be more comfortable. I have plenty of leg room and the trunk space will hold more than you think. I like to call this car my TARDIS since it seems so big on the inside, but looks so small from the outside. It gets lots of looks and people ask me about it all the time. I had a Corolla with 196000 miles on it and my wife has a Matrix. I was going in to buy a new Corolla, but was considering a Matrix too when the xD caught my eye.
