  • Buy and it will die - 1998 Pontiac Trans Sport

"Stinks" is the rating. Nothing but problems and no support from Pontiac. Added adjusters to front wheels to get aligned, 1st year. Problems with the paint sticking on the hood, year 3. Replaced air shock, 2nd year. Tires went 14,000 miles. Rotors went, year 2. I need a new engine! Letters on the internet indicate the car has issues with coolant leaking into the oil. BOOM -- No engine! Extended warranty covered $0! Bubbling paint was not rust related. Engine had too many miles (94,000)! Tires, rooters, air shock excluded. Condensation in exterior lights is normal?

  • Montana Van - 1998 Pontiac Trans Sport

Overall the Montana is a very nice van. We bought it used, 2 years, with 34000 miles in great condition. I really like the van. The size, the easiness of loading/unloading, the pep in the 6 cylinder engine is more than enough, very quick and handles wonderfully, especially for a long/extnded mini-van. We love all the electronic gadgets but have had numerous little problems with several of them.

  • Underrated - a fine automobile - 1998 Pontiac Trans Sport

After nearly 10 years of service, it has never been found wanting. I average 24 mpg with over 107 k miles.

  • Not happy with GM - 1998 Pontiac Trans Sport

I have put 135000 miles on this van. I have only recently had to do any major repairs. I just had the intake manifold gasket done. The radio display went quirky and died. A few electrical problem such as windows and rear windows not working. Just replaced the water pump a few months ago. And so far I have changed wheel bearing assemblies and both ball joints.

  • Lemon Alert - 1998 Pontiac Trans Sport

With only 68,000 miles on this loaded Pontiac. The Intake manifold gasket leaked coolant into the engine(a problem that many other people are also reporting)The special "dexcool" coolant gums up, causing damage to the gasket. Before we knew this was the problem, we noticed that our van was always needed coolant added. We took it into a shop and they said it must just have air in the system. This was wrong of coarse. On top of that, the timing chain slipped (something mechanics say, shouldnt happen on a vehicle with so low miles)and bent some of the valves. It does not run, yet, we still owe.

  • It just keeps on ticking - 1998 Pontiac Trans Sport

I have had a few problems with my Transport as well. The Manifold gasket and the radio display being 2 of them. I have also had to replace the power window switch twice on the drivers side. Overall this van has been exceptional. It never breaks down and all problems have been caught in regular checks. I was going to drive it till it died. But its 10 years old and not even sick!

  • ABS TCM - 1998 Pontiac Trans Sport
    By -

Has 220,000 miles but recently the ABS TCM lights came on. When I stop to restart the car and clear the lights, the wheels "lock up" and it will not move. Had to have it towed twice. Had to have the ABS TCM module replaced ($1200) and it worked ok until yesterday. Did the same thing and the wheels lock up. Anyone else have this problem, because my mechanics cannot figure out why. They are replacing components but not sure of the cause.

  • Wish it could last forever - 1998 Pontiac Trans Sport
    By -

Purchased used with 45,000 miles on it. Dealer included new tires. Just replaced those in summer of 2006. Only other replacement was battery after 4 years(still factory issue). The only problems have been with the rear shocks. Replaced both due to clamp failure. Great gas mileage. Great ride. Very dependable with loads of room. With rear seats out you have a covered truck. Cant imagine life without my van.

  • So Many Things to Like-so many problems - 1998 Pontiac Trans Sport
    By -

I really like this van, however; Ive had so many problems with it. Fortunately I bought an extended warranty, which still has me ahead on cost compared to Chrysler. However, the constant trips to the dealer was a pain. Some of the repeat repairs may have been due to the dealers ability. Problems include: (3)new wiper assemblies, (2)new torque converters, new transmission, air leakage around windows, sliding door alignment, instrument panel lights & switches at $125 each, Traction Control Circuit problems, ABS Brake problems, new ventilation blower motor, & fuel level sensor level sensor.
