Model Overview:

The Pontiac Torrent crossover SUV was a rebadged first-generation Chevy Equinox. It was larger than compact crossovers, yet smaller than midsize SUVs. There was plenty of passenger and cargo space thanks to a long wheelbase, and a lengthy list of standard features sweetened the deal -- including a reclining/sliding second-row seat and a movable cargo shelf.

We preferred a few other crossover SUVs to the Pontiac Torrent, but we had a healthy respect for this underappreciated hauler. It had a smooth and quiet ride along with a spacious and versatile cabin, and it was reasonably priced. With the demise of Pontiac due to GM's bankruptcy woes, the Torrent quickly faded into obscurity. Still, it's a solid pre-owned option, especially given GM's commitment to supporting Pontiac products at existing service centers.

The Pontiac Torrent crossover SUV was produced from 2006-'09. There was initially only one trim level; the uplevel GXP model arrived for '08. Standard equipment included alloy wheels, air-conditioning and full power accessories. Upgrading to the Torrent GXP netted more power, sport-tuned suspension and steering, bigger wheels, dual exhaust outlets, heated front sport seats and a power driver seat, among other features. Some of the GXP's upgrades were available as options on the base Torrent. Depending on the year, a navigation system, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system and Bluetooth were available as stand-alone options.

Available in either front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive configuration, the Pontiac Torrent offered a choice of two powertrains: a 185-horsepower 3.4-liter V6 engine coupled to a five-speed automatic transmission, or the GXP's 264-hp 3.6-liter V6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

In reviews, we noted that the base V6's power was meager by six-cylinder standards, though around-town acceleration was adequate. The uplevel V6 in the GXP, conversely, could really haul the mail when called upon. Inside, we applauded the midsize Torrent's ample room for both occupants and stuff. To accommodate larger passengers or bulky cargo, the 60/40-split rear seat could slide nearly 8 inches fore and aft. An adjustable rear cargo shelf further expanded the loading options, and could also function as a picnic table.

Tuned more for ride comfort than acrobatic maneuvers, even in "sporty" GXP trim, the Pontiac Torrent's fully independent suspension delivered a smooth and compliant ride. Putting serious miles on the Torrent was relaxing, as the lack of wind and road noise made for a calm cabin. Our only real complaint concerned the lifeless electric power steering, which struggled to keep up with the rest of the package.

Used-car shoppers should be aware that some desirable features, such as four-wheel antilock disc brakes and a navigation system, were not available for the Torrent's first year, and side airbags were not standard until '09.

It is great in snow, gets 23mpg always, AWD, roomy, love the rear hatch. Yes I replaced one wheel bearing, did the head gaskets, and now adrive train bearing. But its on its third lifetime in Midwest Winters and hot summer. We got it with 74k 10 yrs ago. On our third set of tires, we buy Cooper. If I can find another with only 100 k on it, Ill buy it for later on. Love the manuverability.

Absolutely horrible and because you now must deal with GM they dont want to recall these vehicles because that would cause them to fix a problem that Pontiac created.I have owned one for almost 2 years and I have had nothing but problems, within a month of owning it the radio didnt work, the lock on the drivers door costs 300 to fix because unless you actually try to open it while it is locked you would of never known it doesnt lock, the rear windshield wiper motor went, the wheel bearings are 300 a piece, and because of how they are made it is common for rocks and sticks to get into the cv shaft and cause 200 in damage.Stabilitrak & ABS light constantly on & off.

Did lots of research before purchasing and after the test drive, I was sold. It has met my expectations. NO mechanical problems and took 2 week road trip and it was very comfortable. I planned on keeping this vehicle for many years, due to its nice performance, handling and storage room. It has a 5 star crash rating and unfortunately I recently was involved in a serious collision with airbag deployment. I walked away from the car without a scratch or bruise! I will be looking for another Torrent to replace this one.

  • lot of SUV for the money - 2007 Pontiac Torrent

I am tall and so are my kids and you gotta LOVE the rear legroom! Unbelievable. I was amazed at how much room this thing has. I share everyones frustration with ergonomics of front window controls, front seat adjuster, cupholders, but these are minor irritants. Had to have some warranty work done to correct some noisy valve operation in the engine but this is covered under the extended drivetrain warranty that comes with the vehicle. I sold GM vehicles in 2002-2003 with this same engine. I have MOST pleased with the 18-19 mpg my wife gets running the kids all over town everyday. Also much peppier in this configuration than Buick Rendezvous or GM minivans with this engine.

  • Great ride - 2006 Pontiac Torrent

I have owned some very expensive vehicles, but none ever rode as quietly, comfortably and firmly as my Torrent, nor were they as much fun to drive. For $25,000, it is the bargain of the year as far as I am concerned.

  • Its OK - 2006 Pontiac Torrent

So I had a Honda Civic and was forced to get rid of it for an SUV, not happy to begin with. Now I have 45K and my windshield has a 3+ crack that started from the right lower seal! Nothing hit my car. Now its in my face. My rotors thump and my car wont crank over sometimes. I live in a snowy area and have driven it in the snow but never ever saw the AWD light kick on. It used to shift rough but now its OK. I guess it was just because it was new. Its OK though, not happy with it but love the sunroof and definitely the stereo and sound system

  • Good Car, So Far - 2006 Pontiac Torrent

My wife was bent on buying one of these things from the first time she saw one on "Survivor." I was wary, partly because I wasnt thrilled about getting an SUV, and partly because Im wary of purchasing anything else from GM (or any American auto maker, for that matter). To be honest, I must admit that Im pleasantly surprised. The ride is comfortable. and it drives quite nicely. The sound system is more than adequate, and we love the sun-roof and leather heated seats. It doesnt feel top-heavy when rounding corners, and rides more like a car than a truck. Weve had no problems thus far. And for the record, I dont ever like admitting when Im wrong. But this was a good choice.

  • First SUV experience - 2006 Pontiac Torrent

This is my first SUV. I love it. The Torrent is fun, roomy, comfortable and stylish. The back seat has lots of room for the children. The idea of adjustable rear seats is great. I would recommend the Torrent to any first time buyer or anyone that has experience with SUVs.

  • Best Vehicle I Have Owned! - 2007 Pontiac Torrent

I love my Torrent. It has a lot of leg room, the fuel economy is quit good, the styling is great. The suspension is good. All around a great SUV! The cup holders have not been an issue for me.

This really puts the ball in the opponents court. This vehicle has been very reliable and has been nothing short of what I need in a family vehicle.
