Model Overview:

The Pontiac Torrent crossover SUV was a rebadged first-generation Chevy Equinox. It was larger than compact crossovers, yet smaller than midsize SUVs. There was plenty of passenger and cargo space thanks to a long wheelbase, and a lengthy list of standard features sweetened the deal -- including a reclining/sliding second-row seat and a movable cargo shelf.

We preferred a few other crossover SUVs to the Pontiac Torrent, but we had a healthy respect for this underappreciated hauler. It had a smooth and quiet ride along with a spacious and versatile cabin, and it was reasonably priced. With the demise of Pontiac due to GM's bankruptcy woes, the Torrent quickly faded into obscurity. Still, it's a solid pre-owned option, especially given GM's commitment to supporting Pontiac products at existing service centers.

The Pontiac Torrent crossover SUV was produced from 2006-'09. There was initially only one trim level; the uplevel GXP model arrived for '08. Standard equipment included alloy wheels, air-conditioning and full power accessories. Upgrading to the Torrent GXP netted more power, sport-tuned suspension and steering, bigger wheels, dual exhaust outlets, heated front sport seats and a power driver seat, among other features. Some of the GXP's upgrades were available as options on the base Torrent. Depending on the year, a navigation system, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system and Bluetooth were available as stand-alone options.

Available in either front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive configuration, the Pontiac Torrent offered a choice of two powertrains: a 185-horsepower 3.4-liter V6 engine coupled to a five-speed automatic transmission, or the GXP's 264-hp 3.6-liter V6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

In reviews, we noted that the base V6's power was meager by six-cylinder standards, though around-town acceleration was adequate. The uplevel V6 in the GXP, conversely, could really haul the mail when called upon. Inside, we applauded the midsize Torrent's ample room for both occupants and stuff. To accommodate larger passengers or bulky cargo, the 60/40-split rear seat could slide nearly 8 inches fore and aft. An adjustable rear cargo shelf further expanded the loading options, and could also function as a picnic table.

Tuned more for ride comfort than acrobatic maneuvers, even in "sporty" GXP trim, the Pontiac Torrent's fully independent suspension delivered a smooth and compliant ride. Putting serious miles on the Torrent was relaxing, as the lack of wind and road noise made for a calm cabin. Our only real complaint concerned the lifeless electric power steering, which struggled to keep up with the rest of the package.

Used-car shoppers should be aware that some desirable features, such as four-wheel antilock disc brakes and a navigation system, were not available for the Torrent's first year, and side airbags were not standard until '09.

  • Style, efficiency & reliability - 2007 Pontiac Torrent

Ive upgraded to the 2007 Torrent from the 2004 Aztek - wow! My Aztek was very reliable but Pontiac raised the bar even more with the Torrent. Style, class and efficiency are very common with Pontiac and the Torrent is no exception. I have the "Preferred" and "Sun and Sound" packages which make my Torrent feel worth double the money! The Torrent also handles wonderfully and is very fun to drive. Kudos Pontiac - the Torrent is a wonderful vehicle!

Actually owned its cousin the Chevrolet Equinox for 4 years. I love that car. So much so I added a Torrent to the stable. The Equinox and Torrent are fun to drive and I have had zero problems. A little over 20 in the city and 24-26 on the highway MPG. The moving Rear seat is my favorite feature, but the performance of the engine and transmission is as good as the Mercedes I once owned.

I only have 700 miles but I am pleased with the vehicle. The power is adequate but the mileage should be better. The height is good. the stereo is excellent. The steering feels a little different then I am used to. Overall, I am happy with the car.

  • Caution Danger! - 2006 Pontiac Torrent

Until now, I had been very happy with my Torrent which I had purchased less than a year ago. Although, my recent experience has left me terrified of the vehicle. I been driving for four hours in the middle of the summer when without any warning whatsoever my car had died. I lost all steering and veered to the side of the road. A bad alternator had caused the car to die. Because of this, the power lock doors and windows would not open. I was trapped inside my Pontiac Torrent midsummer in 37 degree Celsius sun unable to open any doors or windows. I had learned the hard way there is no emergency release within the vehicle to unlock the doors and car windows.

So far, I love it. My only real complaint is that there are a couple of nasty blind spots I need to get used to. Otherwise, one of the nicest riding, most comfortable vehicles Ive ever been in. I got the Sun and Sound package and really like the upgraded stereo. I love the auto volume control feature on the stereo that adjusts the volume up at freeway speeds and down at stops. I also like the gas tank on the passenger side. It makes it easier to find an empty pump since everyone else has theirs on the driver side.

I bought this for my daughter for her birthday. She recently got her license and has adapted very well to the car. Ive driven a lot of different cars and trucks and have a luxury sports convertible. While it doesnt handle like that car, it does handle very well and has exceptional power so it moves quickly onto highways. The car is comfortable to drive with good visiblility. The car has all wheel drive but rides very well.

  • I Love My Torrent - 2006 Pontiac Torrent

At first, I was not looking to buy another vehicle. One of my best friends sell cars and I went to see her and I saw the Torrent on the showroom floor. Originally, I was looking at the Envoy but I felt it was a little big. The Torrent really caught my eye and I fell in love with it when I saw it. I knew I had to drive it off the lot and thats just what I did. I took the one off the showroom floor. It rides very good and easy to see over the wheel. The sound system is great.

I fell in love with the Torrent the moment I saw it. I found it to be fun to drive and comfortable. While to took so getting use to with the window controls and such, the vehicle was an excellent choice on my part. Power and transmition were no problems.

  • Problems with ignition and key assembly - 2006 Pontiac Torrent
    By -

Positive things: roomy inside, and gas mileage is great. Negative things: key ignition locks up. Have had it replaced (cylinder) and still in locks up again. Also had a defect in the wheel bearing and GM first did not want to include in my GM protection plan extended warranty which I purchased at a high price. After reaching GMPP themselves, it was paid. But I had to pay $100 deductible 3 times to get things straightened out.

  • Car Great. Oil usage very bad. - 2007 Pontiac Torrent
    By -

My 2007 Torrent has 13,000 miles on it. It has been carefully driven and dealer serviced. It uses 1 qt. of oil every 2000 miles. GM says this is normal for all of their cars and trucks and refuses to fix it. Dealer says theyve not seen this before but refuses to help. GMs Regional Manager refuses to contact me so I can discuss this with GM. This defect and GMs refusal to honor their warranty has ruined our experience with an otherwise excellent vehicle. I strongly suggest you not buy a GM vehicle.
