Overview & Reviews
The Pontiac Torrent crossover SUV was a rebadged first-generation Chevy Equinox. It was larger than compact crossovers, yet smaller than midsize SUVs. There was plenty of passenger and cargo space thanks to a long wheelbase, and a lengthy list of standard features sweetened the deal -- including a reclining/sliding second-row seat and a movable cargo shelf.
We preferred a few other crossover SUVs to the Pontiac Torrent, but we had a healthy respect for this underappreciated hauler. It had a smooth and quiet ride along with a spacious and versatile cabin, and it was reasonably priced. With the demise of Pontiac due to GM's bankruptcy woes, the Torrent quickly faded into obscurity. Still, it's a solid pre-owned option, especially given GM's commitment to supporting Pontiac products at existing service centers.
Most Recent Pontiac Torrent
The Pontiac Torrent crossover SUV was produced from 2006-'09. There was initially only one trim level; the uplevel GXP model arrived for '08. Standard equipment included alloy wheels, air-conditioning and full power accessories. Upgrading to the Torrent GXP netted more power, sport-tuned suspension and steering, bigger wheels, dual exhaust outlets, heated front sport seats and a power driver seat, among other features. Some of the GXP's upgrades were available as options on the base Torrent. Depending on the year, a navigation system, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system and Bluetooth were available as stand-alone options.
Available in either front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive configuration, the Pontiac Torrent offered a choice of two powertrains: a 185-horsepower 3.4-liter V6 engine coupled to a five-speed automatic transmission, or the GXP's 264-hp 3.6-liter V6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.
In reviews, we noted that the base V6's power was meager by six-cylinder standards, though around-town acceleration was adequate. The uplevel V6 in the GXP, conversely, could really haul the mail when called upon. Inside, we applauded the midsize Torrent's ample room for both occupants and stuff. To accommodate larger passengers or bulky cargo, the 60/40-split rear seat could slide nearly 8 inches fore and aft. An adjustable rear cargo shelf further expanded the loading options, and could also function as a picnic table.
Tuned more for ride comfort than acrobatic maneuvers, even in "sporty" GXP trim, the Pontiac Torrent's fully independent suspension delivered a smooth and compliant ride. Putting serious miles on the Torrent was relaxing, as the lack of wind and road noise made for a calm cabin. Our only real complaint concerned the lifeless electric power steering, which struggled to keep up with the rest of the package.
Used-car shoppers should be aware that some desirable features, such as four-wheel antilock disc brakes and a navigation system, were not available for the Torrent's first year, and side airbags were not standard until '09.

Concerns with Manufacturing - 2008 Pontiac Torrent
By Steven Lopez - April 6 - 10:00 amI have a 2008 torrent and have had several issues go wrong with the SUV! My windshield wipers dont work on low speed, Air conditioner went out a few weeks ago, my back door, passenger side does not lock or unlock with auto unlock! These are just a few of things I have had trouble with right after the warranty went out!

Great looking SUV - 2008 Pontiac Torrent
By Ryan - March 29 - 11:06 pmI would recommend this vehicle to anyone who is thinking about getting an SUV. This is my first SUV and I love the look and comfort of it. XM radio in the vehicle is a great feature that I cant believe I lived with out before. This is a very roomy vehicle, yet still very sporty looking.

Miles Per Tank - 2006 Pontiac Torrent
By David - March 21 - 4:33 pmThe Miles per tank on our 2006 torrent are not good. With only a 16.6 gallon tank at 19 mpg we are only getting about 300 miles per tank. The needle drops fast and before we know it another stop for fuel. The 2007 has a 20 gallon tank!

Perfect Size SUV - 2008 Pontiac Torrent
By ronvrll - March 21 - 12:10 pmTraded in my GMC Yukon for this Pontiac because of high gas prices. Though I would have to settle for less of a vehicle to save gas but I was wrong. Torrent is solid and is fun to drive. Tows my camper with no problem.

Water pert near floating spare tire - 2007 Pontiac Torrent
By laniki - March 16 - 9:22 pmI can not find the source of the leak. I had to use the spare in the middle of winter and had to chip ice in the middle of a snow storm to access my spare!!! I almost tore out the wires for the trailer plug removing it! Car washes and heavy rain fill this compartment up to the tire!!! I have caulked all possible leak points that I can see to no avail. Any help in this matter would be appreciated.

One Year Review - 2006 Pontiac Torrent
By rayban64 - March 8 - 1:23 pmWe lived in AZ, were moving to VA and needed something for the winter months that could also move a lot of stuff cross-country. The tires are specially made and when we got a flat in Santa Cruze, NM we were stranded for a few days until a new tire came in. It handles well in the snow but the wiper blades are in a well that easily fill with snow and ice requiring you to get out and clean it on dangerous roads. The materials for the interior are very cheap. The turning radius is horrible. Gas mileage is not what they claim. Overall value though is very good and we enjoy it. The clamps on the rack do not hold at all.

My new Torrent! - 2006 Pontiac Torrent
By Jim Knox - February 17 - 2:33 pmAfter a great ownership experience with a Saturn Vue (which my son now has), the torrent has much more torque, great five speed tranny, leather, luxury features like heated seats, XM radio, six disc cd, and its bigger for more cargo too. The ride is more controlled, quieter and less stressful on the highway - well worth the extra cost. The fit and finish are exemplary, just cant imagine what the buyers of German and Japanese fail too see in this fine GM product (Im a former foreign car only owner). GMs got it now, just hope its not too late for the General.

Disgusted! - 2007 Pontiac Torrent
By C. Greer - February 1 - 2:13 pmThis is the second brand new vehicle I have leased, I got out of an 05 Canyon thinking the Torrent would be better for the family, Boy was I WRONG!! I am absolutely disgusted with the Torrent, the fuel mileage isnt at all what I expected, the Stabilitrak has caused nothing but issues, there is a rumble up the centre of the vehicle everytime the roads are just wet. Not to mention the lack of control in the snow, I will never buy another vehicle with AWD again, nor will I deal with GM ever again! Their customer service and assistance have proved to be useless!
