Overview & Reviews
Until Pontiac bit the dust in the wake of GM's 2009 bankruptcy fiasco, the Pontiac G6 was the company's go-to midsize car. In a constant battle to steal sales from the class favorites, the G6 offered unusually tactful styling by Pontiac standards, solid performance from its V6 engines and the availability of a four-seat retractable-hardtop convertible body style. Volume-selling models were the five-passenger sedan and four-passenger coupe.
Unlike the Grand Am that it replaced, the Pontiac G6 had considerably more flavor than a generic rental car. Still, the traditional class favorites topped the G6 in the areas of engine refinement, driving dynamics and cabin materials. The G6 may still hold appeal for used-car shoppers, especially given its likely cut-rate pricing. GM has pledged to continue supporting Pontiac products in its service departments, so a used G6 isn't necessarily a bad idea.
Most Recent Pontiac G6
Based on General Motors' lengthened "Epsilon" platform, the Pontiac G6 was produced from 2005-'09 as a sedan, coupe and retractable-hardtop convertible. For '05, only the sedan was offered; the coupe and convertible debuted a year later. Three main trim levels were offered on the sedan: base, GT and GTP (which became the GXP in '08). Coupes were either GTs or GTP/GXPs, convertibles GT only. Plenty of standard features, such as air-conditioning, full power accessories and CD audio, came on the base model. The GT added niceties such as an upgraded Monsoon audio system. The GXP topped the range with items like sporty exterior styling tweaks and automatic climate control.
At the time of Pontiac's demise, the G6's engine lineup included a base 2.4-liter four (164 horsepower), a 3.5-liter V6 (219 hp), a 3.9-liter V6 available on the convertible only (222 hp) and the GXP's 3.6-liter V6 (252 hp). Four-speed automatics were standard with all except the GXP's V6, which got a six-speed; however, the four-cylinder got an optional six-speed for 2009 that raised highway fuel economy to a laudable 33 mpg. Some power ratings were a bit lower in previous years, notably the 3.5-liter V6, and a manual transmission was available on a limited basis until '08.
In reviews we found that the Pontiac G6 offered generous room for those riding in back, no matter the body style. And we noted that after years of enduring criticism about its overstyled exteriors and gimmicky interior designs, Pontiac stepped up its efforts with the G6. Outside, the G6 had a crisp and sleek look; inside, there was a restrained and attractive layout with none of the traditional dull gray plastic switches. Even so, the G6 still had a few too many cheap plastic surfaces for our tastes.
On the road, we appreciated the low and midrange torque of the 3.5-liter V6, and the ride was smooth. The convertible's optional 3.9-liter V6 should be avoided if possible, though -- it was barely more powerful than the 3.5-liter V6 and got worse fuel economy. Handling was respectable, but we disliked the electric power steering, which was too light and offered virtually no feedback. GT models from 2007 and up had an improved hydraulic steering setup, which we preferred. Along with the enhanced feature content of the later models, we'd recommend focusing your used Pontiac G6 search on the '07 or newer models.

My first REAL car - 2006 Pontiac G6
By HxaX - December 23 - 11:00 pmIf youre looking for a great performance, fully loaded car for around $10,000, this is your car. Im only 20 years old and purchased this car a few weeks ago and so far it has driven great! I love all the features.. the huge sunroof is great to show off. The performance of the car STOCK is very smooth and very fast. And the stereo system is one to keep stock. Most guys my age are looking for cars like this, its too bad there paying around 20k - 30k for them. I paid $10k for this fully loaded beauty! The one downside is the gas mileage. I get around 17 - 19 mpg city and 18 - 22 highway.. Which isnt too bad considering Im on 20 inch tires. But its worth it for this ride!

This Is A Must See Vehicle - 2005 Pontiac G6
By Carl - December 19 - 7:43 amPerformance is very good - no problem accelerating into rush hour traffic on I-95. Panoramic sunroof is closest thing to a convertible w/o the headaches. Minor wind noise at high speed closed, but dealer fixed - no noise and no leaks. Great styling - classy car. We love it! Its the best car weve had.

Good value for domestic car - 2009 Pontiac G6
By George - December 13 - 2:30 amWe bought the car in June 09 with 5000 miles on it (as a demo) we have put 20,000 more very few issues. Ours has the 2.4 L 4 cyl and 6 speed auto trans, it gets in the low 30s on long distance trips, mid 20s around town 50/50 mix of fwy and city driving. No major issues so far, most recent problem has been some brake issues, but seems to be solved with new pads. The turn signal stalk came loose, replaced under warranty. Only other issue, a speck of rust has started on the trunk lid, will be repaired under warranty also. The car has a muffled rattle in the headliner, our Malibu had one too. This car was loaded up with all of the stuff you could get on a 4 cyl model. Its a keeper.

Sorry you guys have problems - 2007 Pontiac G6
By jaydub - December 6 - 5:33 amIve had mine for going on two years now and Ive put over 45k on it. Thing runs like a top. No problems with the panoramic sunroof. I get great mileage for a 6-cyl on the highway. City is not so great but I recently went on a 1500+ mile road trip and was getting 30+ mpg, thought the computer might be broke so I figured it out myself and I wasnt dreaming. Handles great and is smooth and reliable in these New England winters.

Ill NEVER buy a Pontiac again. - 2005 Pontiac G6
By graceangeleve - December 3 - 2:42 pmIve driven this car for 5 years, so I know what Im talking about. My car has 70K miles on it, and Ive had more problems with this car than ANY car Ive ever owned. Essentially, everything under the hood has had to be replaced. Today they told me that my transmission is OUT, and I dont push or pull ANYTHING! Electronic steering is out, electrical problems GALORE, brakes are crap and constantly have to be replaced. (keep in mind, all of my miles are HIGHWAY miles ONLY!) I dont speed, dont drive crazy. I can say its definitly pretty to look at and thats it. Even my seats are squeaky, so is the dash. Its horrible. Dont buy this car.

Smooth - 2007 Pontiac G6
By mikedizzel8 - November 28 - 2:20 pmThis car is one smooth ride. During the winter with my heated seats on I could probably fall asleep while driving it if I didnÂ’t have my nice loud factory speakers going. I have friends who always say they dislike American cars but they sit and ride in the G6 and they change their mind. Panoramic sunroof is real nice, itÂ’s huge! I havenÂ’t any problems with it in 6 months. Besides gas mileage and few minor things itÂ’s a great buy!

Hope you dont get the one I had - 2006 Pontiac G6
By Dan - November 8 - 8:03 pmI bought this car new from the dealership and it returned frequently. I love the styling and the car is fun to drive when its new, however I drove more miles with a shimmy, shake, or rattle more than not. At 4K the starter burned up and the car smelled like fire for 4 months. Tie rods wore out 3 times, struts broke, finally a rattle in the front end that couldnt be found. GM finally bought the car back and I move into a 2008 Malibu.

Exceeds My Expectations - 2006 Pontiac G6
By Danny - November 6 - 12:56 pmThis car exceeds all of the expectations I had for a new car. Fun to drive, good on gas and a definite head-turner on the road. The only drawback I have found is the dark interior which gets very hot in the warm months. The XM Radio is a decided plus.

By anasanchez - November 3 - 10:10 pmI just bought my g6 this past Saturday so far so good, it has a smooth drive nice simple basic interior the chrome makes that basic interior look good i can fit my two car seats in the back with room for one person to fit (skinny) the trunk looks small but my massage table fits in the trunk perfect. The seats are comfy and I like how it tells me how much mileage Im getting from a full tank on the radio.
