Overview & Reviews
Until Pontiac bit the dust in the wake of GM's 2009 bankruptcy fiasco, the Pontiac G6 was the company's go-to midsize car. In a constant battle to steal sales from the class favorites, the G6 offered unusually tactful styling by Pontiac standards, solid performance from its V6 engines and the availability of a four-seat retractable-hardtop convertible body style. Volume-selling models were the five-passenger sedan and four-passenger coupe.
Unlike the Grand Am that it replaced, the Pontiac G6 had considerably more flavor than a generic rental car. Still, the traditional class favorites topped the G6 in the areas of engine refinement, driving dynamics and cabin materials. The G6 may still hold appeal for used-car shoppers, especially given its likely cut-rate pricing. GM has pledged to continue supporting Pontiac products in its service departments, so a used G6 isn't necessarily a bad idea.
Most Recent Pontiac G6
Based on General Motors' lengthened "Epsilon" platform, the Pontiac G6 was produced from 2005-'09 as a sedan, coupe and retractable-hardtop convertible. For '05, only the sedan was offered; the coupe and convertible debuted a year later. Three main trim levels were offered on the sedan: base, GT and GTP (which became the GXP in '08). Coupes were either GTs or GTP/GXPs, convertibles GT only. Plenty of standard features, such as air-conditioning, full power accessories and CD audio, came on the base model. The GT added niceties such as an upgraded Monsoon audio system. The GXP topped the range with items like sporty exterior styling tweaks and automatic climate control.
At the time of Pontiac's demise, the G6's engine lineup included a base 2.4-liter four (164 horsepower), a 3.5-liter V6 (219 hp), a 3.9-liter V6 available on the convertible only (222 hp) and the GXP's 3.6-liter V6 (252 hp). Four-speed automatics were standard with all except the GXP's V6, which got a six-speed; however, the four-cylinder got an optional six-speed for 2009 that raised highway fuel economy to a laudable 33 mpg. Some power ratings were a bit lower in previous years, notably the 3.5-liter V6, and a manual transmission was available on a limited basis until '08.
In reviews we found that the Pontiac G6 offered generous room for those riding in back, no matter the body style. And we noted that after years of enduring criticism about its overstyled exteriors and gimmicky interior designs, Pontiac stepped up its efforts with the G6. Outside, the G6 had a crisp and sleek look; inside, there was a restrained and attractive layout with none of the traditional dull gray plastic switches. Even so, the G6 still had a few too many cheap plastic surfaces for our tastes.
On the road, we appreciated the low and midrange torque of the 3.5-liter V6, and the ride was smooth. The convertible's optional 3.9-liter V6 should be avoided if possible, though -- it was barely more powerful than the 3.5-liter V6 and got worse fuel economy. Handling was respectable, but we disliked the electric power steering, which was too light and offered virtually no feedback. GT models from 2007 and up had an improved hydraulic steering setup, which we preferred. Along with the enhanced feature content of the later models, we'd recommend focusing your used Pontiac G6 search on the '07 or newer models.

Glad I choose this one - 2007 Pontiac G6
By ccsr - November 19 - 9:43 amI purchased this car to replace a 2003 Mazda 6 w/ 190K miles. I can not get over how happy I am with my purchase. Who said base model cars have to be stripped down or cheap? Not this one! The car handles like it should cost more and its so quiet and torquey you wont even realize youre blowing by posted speed limits like its nothing. Although I bought it used with 15K miles on it, I still have the remainder of the factory warranties and a vehicle that in my opinion outperforms the Mazda in all aspects it makes me dread driving my wifes boring 2007 Toyota Camry. If anyone is in the market for a solid built midsize car dont neglect checking out the G6, it will surprise you.

By Polishprinsess13 - November 8 - 1:36 pmI have driven many different cars in my life and none have compared to the G6! Its amazing. I did my research before I committed and talked directly with other G6 owners. This car has received rave reviews from everyone and now I am a believer. You must TRY it....you wont regret it!

The Fantastic G6 - 2006 Pontiac G6
By alanhfrank - November 3 - 5:13 pmWhen I purchased my 06 Pontiac G6 with the Ecotec 2.4L, I thought I was settling for something less than I was use to. This is far from the case. I have found the 2.4 to quick off the line, and easily gets out of its own way on the highway. I do miss not having ABS or traction....my error when buying the G6. I love the handling, but found the stock tires to be too weak on the curves. Replaced them with Goodyear Assurance (Eagle- Like)....which handle the curves perfectly, and matches the great G6 suspension. Only criticism is the interior switchgear could be higher quality. Very happy with my decision.

Great Car - 2006 Pontiac G6
By Harry - October 26 - 7:23 pmI recently purchased my GTP and have put a ton a miles on it. It has been very reliable and a TRILL to drive. It hugs curves extremely well and can get to 100 mph in a flash. I test drove many cars in the GTP price range and this was by far the best. I would recommend this car to anyone.

Plan on Spending Time in the Shop - 2006 Pontiac G6
By Total Junk - October 25 - 9:20 amShortly after purchasing this vehicle 20k miles I noticed a spring sound coming from the front passenger wheel. Turned out to be a strut problem. 30k miles replaced the drivers side strut and then had to replace the entire front suspension. Now at 52k it is doing it all again. The interior door molding is pulling away from the door. Now I also think the the bearings are bad in the front passenger wheel because the tire sounds like an airplane engine taking off and landing as I reduce speed. This vehicle has been nothing but problems and would not recommend a G6 or any other GM product to anyone that I valued as a friend. Ive replaced my rotors at least 6 times as well.

pontiac G6 - 2005 Pontiac G6
By Jessica - October 24 - 2:13 amI love this car! There is plenty of storage room in the trunk. I opted for the regular sun roof and there is plenty of room for my 62 husband to sit in the back. The exterior has a sporty look, unlike most other sedans. And it handled great it the snow.

2006 G6 - 2006 Pontiac G6
By Chupa Cabra - October 22 - 10:56 amI really give the car a lot of credit. My wife runs the hell out of that thing and I just maintain it with the standard maintenance items that I normally do. Oil change, filter, air filter, check tire pressure. Have not checked plugs yet. More than likely they are fine. I believe there are iridium in there and there is not enough miles on it to worry about it. The only thing I get a little scared about is the car likes to continue to try to start after you turn the key to the starting position. Really bizarre. I personally dont like the rear window pillars. I cannot see anything when I go to switch lanes. So take your time switching lanes. ake sure it is clear.
