This Year's Model Updates:

The Pontiac G6 sees a host of changes for the 2006 model year. Starting things off are two new body styles: a two-door coupe and a hardtop convertible. The coupe will be available at the beginning of the model year, while the convertible hits dealer showrooms early in the 2006 calendar year. There are also new trim levels. A four-cylinder base sedan caters to those shoppers on a tighter budget, while a GTP trim increases the G6's performance threshold via the addition of a new 240-hp V6, stability control and an available six-speed manual transmission.

Pros:
  • Huge rear seat, fuel-efficient V6 engines offer ample low-end pull, sporty suspension tuning, power hardtop in convertible model, panoramic sunroof in sedan.
Cons:
  • Cheap interior plastics, numb electric steering, panoramic sunroof eats up rear-seat headroom.

I have owned this car for 3 years after purchasing brand new in 2006 and it currently has 78500 miles. Since then I have replaced the tires once, had to have the fuel injection system replaced, exhaust replaced, steering column replaced and replaced the brakes and rotors once. The engine is noisy and the car squeaks and rattles under normal driving conditions. The average MPG registers about 25 on the information center with a mix of city and highway driving. The best mileage has been close to 30. The brakes are noisy but work fine. The resale value is not great, I would not recommend buying a new G6 but a used one may provide cheap transportation.

Bought it in June 05 , and have 9000 miles on it . Pleasantly surprised . MPG on Hwy at 80 mph we got 32 mpg on a 600 mile trip . My wife averages 28-30 in mixed driving . Very quiet except on really rough roads, excellent stereo , and spacious back seat on base sedan . Some cheap plastic on the interior , but what do you expect for under 20k ?

  • Sound system hurts ears - 2006 Pontiac G6

When the radio is on regardless as to the volumne the drivers window has to stay open or I get this horrible vibrating, and my ears literally hurt. If only the back windows are open the rear window by the speakers also will vibrate from the wind. The dealer stated that it is normal and nothing can be done. !!!!!!!!!!!

If you are looking at Accords or Camrys you had better check out the G6 before you buy. GM hit the bullseye with this car. Great styling, great fit and finish. Interior is well laid out and comfortable. I have had the car 6 months and have 21,000 miles on it. I average 28 - 30 mpg on the highway, and I dont baby it! Tremendous room inside for a car this size. One word of caution. If you are tall (0ver 6 ft) the large sunroof may cut into your headroom. I am 510" and have no problems. Trunk size is larger than I expected. Because of the adjustable pedals and steering wheel, both my wife (52") and I (510") can easily find comfortable driving positions.

  • This car is a Nightmare!!!! - 2006 Pontiac G6

Well what a disappointment this has been! If I hadnt have bought it used it would have been lemon lawed 3 times! GM didnt offer any sort of help. All I can say is that I am so happy I bought the extended warranty. I will know bless you with my list of problems: 1. When I replaced the brakes 3 out of 4 had problems.2. 2 new rack and pinions 3. 3 new fuel pumps due to an extended start problem that they cant figure out 4. There is a leak somewhere in the frame that get into the computer and causes A LOT of computer problems. Also, the car didnt hold its value so now I am about $5000 upside down! What a nightmare! Dont buy it or youll regret it. JUNK!!!

I bought the G6 to replace a 1999 Mazda 626. I also looked at the new Mazda 6 and the Suburu Legacy. The 6 cyl G6 offered much more options then the 4 cyl version of these cars for the same price. It has strong, smooth accelration, tight handling and suspension, and drives like a sport car. The four door is roomy in the front/back and can easily accomodate a family. The panoramic moonroof is huge, and really cool. Overall, a fun car to drive. The only suprise so far is the fuel economy, the sticker says 21-29 but it is more like 20-24. Also, small trunk space and headroom compared to the Mazda 6 and Suburu. It also has more blind spots then other sedans. A great bargin for 20K.

  • Pretty Strong For The Money - 2006 Pontiac G6
    By -

This is my company car, and I have only had it for a month, but here are my first impressions. The engine is strong (especially above 4000 RPM), and the transmission is the best 4 speed automatic I have ever driven. The ride is reasonably firm for a domestic while not being overly harsh. The interior room is very good for a car in this class, and the exterior styling is fine if not a tad subdued. My only real complaint is the quality of the interior pieces. The door panels and the console are made of inferior quality plastic. It looks like something you would expect to find on a Yugo (pretty bad). Made sure to poke around at the interior before you buy. It is way under Honda/Toyota.
