This Year's Model Updates:

Electronic traction control is now available on all models, with a bigger gas tank and an oil life monitor standard. A Torsen limited-slip rear axle comes with V8 models (and V6 cars with the performance package), while an eight-speaker Delco/Monsoon sound system goes into the convertible. A power-steering cooler is now available for V8s, and a Hurst shifter is optional on the six-speed manual transmission. The Ram Air WS6 package now sports dual outlet exhaust, and two new exterior colors debut, Pewter and Medium Blue Metallic. The 30th anniversary Trans Am sports an extroverted paint scheme that features two blue stripes running over the hood and deck lid.

Pros:
  • Powerful V6, spectacular V8, true muscle car performance package at bargain-basement price.
Cons:
  • Boy-racer-in-gold-chains image, cheesy interior plastic, sky-high insurance rates for V8 models.

  • Great, fun car! - 1999 Pontiac Firebird

I bought my T/A in July of 07. I had to get a few things fixed and replaced, but thats because the previous owner didnt take care of it. I use only 93 octane gas from either Shell or Chevron, and only use Royal Purple oil. Since Ive gotten ahold of it, its run better than ever. I guess what Im trying to say is, just take care of it. Mine has Ram Air and some mods, and it dynod at 370hp. Even a stock T/A is fast! I get a ton of looks, and people trying to race me. I used to have an Integra, and I have to say... American muscle is the only way to go. If you get this car, you will not be disappointed.

  • Love it! - 1999 Pontiac Firebird

In 2007, I was looking for a camaro as I had had a 1973, 1978, and 1989 in the past and loved them. Then I saw the red T/A sitting at a buick dealer. A 1999 with only 34,000 miles on it. T-tops, leather power seats with power lumbar support, auto-trans, 10 speaker cd stereo, I was in heaven! I love that when you tromp on it, it plants you back in the seat and the tires chirp in the first 3 gears even when you leave the trans in Drive. She is beautiful. As for repairs, I have had to replace one head light motor, one power window motor, two modules, and for some reason, multiple turn signal bulbs. I try to keep the milage down, but I love to drive it so it now has 65,000 miles. I adore my t/a.

Ive had this car for going on 4 years now and have yet to have any problems. Makes a great everyday driver and weekend racer. I would recommend this car to any responsible driver.

For the money, there are few cars in the WORLD which look, handle, and perform like a T/A! GM put most everything into the LS1 and the BW 6- speed tranny. I have the traction control which I leave on! I must be doing something right for at 25K miles, theres tread on the tires and I have never had a SINGLE problem. This car is excellent for eating asphalt. Ive had it in 6th on the highway and its just like an automatic. At 70 mph on cruise (EXCEPT "just accelerating to pass..."), I get over 25 mpg. These cars are a STEAL as used cars! Right now, you can pick one up for less than KBB trade. I plan to keep driving either a T/A or SS as long as I can find them! THESE cars are great!

  • Lots of fun, but not worth it! - 1999 Pontiac Firebird

I got this car as a gift when I turned 16.I am now 19 and wish I would have never saw it!It is an awesome car to drive, ive had alot of memories and fun in it.But Ive have to have it in the shop every other month for the last year.Ive had to replace the turn signals mulitple times, the catalitic converter twice, new battery, fuel injectors, plugs and wires twice, also had to have the O2 sensors replaced. The car has 72K miles on it and has had problems since 30K.Power window motors each replaced twice. The rotors also where shot at 40K miles. The speakers are also all blown. The car was fun for the first year now I hate it!

  • Nice, but be careful - 1999 Pontiac Firebird

I love this car, I really do... but if you think you are getting a maintance free car, think again. Ive had to replace the cadilidic converter, transmition, and window motors all in a matter of 8 months. Its a fun car to drive, but again with any sports car, be prepared to put up with some headaches. Also, upgrading some of the performance peices can be a snap, but others can be a pain in the rear. For example, the engine is mounted sideways, so replacing spark plugs can be a chore. NOTE, I only gave the performance a six becuase the relaibility is so poor.... mine is increased to a good 230 HP and it handles great, but becuase of shop problems Im often left wondering.

Great reliability and quality. It also has great performance, much better than most imports and the exterior design is amazing. These types of cars really are beautiful

The only problem i have encountered is a faulty head light motor, the motor that raises the concealed headlight. It rumbles whenever the alarm is armed or headlights are lowered, it only last 7 seconds. Changing out he light motor requires a dealership and cost 252.00. Other than that the car is virtually perfect. The positioning of the cataylitic converted is problematic for the passenger, but since i dont sit there it doesnt bother me that much.

This car is the most fun car I have ever driven the power of the V-8 is superb. Im surprised with some of these reviews saying they had major problems. The only problem I have had in three years is the clutch sticking and that just turned out to be a bushing that was out of alignment. Maybe I was lucky, but my Formula has been prefroming like a champ since purchase and I ride it hard. Could use a little sprucing up with the interior, but what do you expect for under $30K.

  • Too much fun - 1999 Pontiac Firebird

I have a silver 5 speed, T-top coupe with a V6-lots of power and appeal. Yes the bucket seat is too low, rear visibility is not good, interior could be prettier.etc.but at the end of the day, driving this thing with the top off if just too much fun. I love the exterior look. I still grin as I walk out to the parking lot and see it waiting. Driving it is excellent therapy and a tension reliever-even my wife feels that way when she roars off shifting gears like a stock car racer. My neighbor has a new Vette (06) also silver and frankly, side by side, look to look I really think my old beast still holds its own-especially when you compare our investments!
