Model Overview:

The Nissan Titan, introduced for 2004, was the first Japanese pickup to truly possess the attributes that buyers typically expect from a full-size truck. Manufactured at Nissan's Canton, Mississippi, plant, it boasts dimensions and capabilities that are very similar to those of domestic full-size pickups. Though it hasn't sold as well as its rivals and is now growing quite long in the tooth, a new or used Nissan Titan can still meet the basic needs of many truck shoppers.

Current Nissan Titan
The Nissan Titan is a full-size pickup truck. In terms of size, it's very similar to the trucks offered by domestic automakers, which means it provides competitive amounts of cargo and interior room. There's a fully boxed frame underneath for maximum rigidity and strength, as well as a traditional solid rear axle with leaf-spring support.

Nissan currently offers the Titan in extended-cab (King Cab) and crew-cab styles, with two bed lengths each. Buyers may also choose between standard- and long-wheelbase versions, with the latter adding 20 inches in length. The King Cab is offered with either a 6.5- or 8-foot bed, while those on the crew cab are each 1 foot shorter. The King Cab's rear-hinged doors open extra wide to aid cargo loading or a passenger's entry to the rear seats. The crew cab has four traditional doors and a larger rear seating area with more available rear legroom than the extended cab.

Each Nissan Titan body style is available in four trim levels. Similar to other Nissan products, there's the entry-level S, the midgrade SV, off-road-focused PRO-4X and the luxury-oriented SL. The S has a front bench seat, while captain's chairs with a flow-through console are standard on the other trims. Standard safety features now include stability control, front-seat side airbags and side curtain airbags. Notable options, depending on trim, include upgraded audio systems, a navigation system, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system and utility-enhancing cargo bed features. For those who anticipate pulling trailers, the SV Value Truck or SL Max Utility tow packages are also available.

The PRO-4X trim level adds equipment for serious off-roaders that include Rancho shocks, a lower final-drive ratio, skid plates, an electronic locking differential and 18-inch off-road wheels with aggressive off-road tires. Unique exterior and interior styling cues to differentiate the PRO-4X from the other Titan models are also included.

For power, Nissan offers only one combination: a 5.6-liter V8 connected to a five-speed automatic transmission. The V8 is rated at 317 horsepower and 385 pound-feet of torque. The transmission features a tow/haul mode for when the truck is used for pulling or carrying heavy loads. For every body style and trim combination, two- or four-wheel drive is available.

In Nissan Titan reviews, our editors have found it to be powerful and capable both on- and off-road. Downsides include a lack of additional powertrain choices and the absence of a heavy-duty model. The Titan has also been outclassed by newer competitors in terms of comfort and overall design. Still, we think Nissan's Titan is worth a look.

Used Nissan Titan Models
The current, first-generation Titan debuted for 2004, and these earlier trucks could be a good choice for a shopper searching for a used late-model pickup. The first couple of production years, in particular, outclassed domestic pickups in many ways. The most notable changes for the Nissan Titan came for the 2008 model year and included the addition of a long-wheelbase model, exterior and interior styling refreshes and new features. Models built for 2007 and earlier were available in one wheelbase length only, lacked the two different bed lengths for each body style and also had a reduced maximum payload.

It should be noted that stability control, side airbags and side curtain airbags were not standard on all Titans until 2010. Used shoppers should investigate whether the truck in question is equipped with them. Also, the current trim levels were introduced for the 2011 model year; previously, the Titan's three main trims were XE, SE and LE, though feature content was broadly comparable.

This is the third nissan truck I have owned. All have been excellent in reliability. The Titan is an excellent performer. The 5.6 is very responsive and really comes to life when you kick in the passing gear. The 5-speed auto- matic tranny is the smoothest I ever felt. I love the boxed frame rales. fuel economy is fair so far the best I have achieved is 16.7 mpg driving Like my grandpaw. I only have 1200 miles on this truck so hopefully it will improve some. With the nissan gold plan a 100,000 mile bumper-bumper or seven years, You cant go wrong. Why dont domestics stand by their product like that? This coming from a chevy fan. The truck is 60% american, chevy/ford about the same

  • Best bang for the buck - 2004 Nissan Titan

Looking for a truck can be a real pain. After a lot of research I started test driving. I had already owned a dodge and never even considered one, so I tried the other two main big boys. Thier power was ok, but not great. They both seem to want to go small but charge big. So I finally went to my Nissan dealer, We already own an Xterra and love it. I had also owned a 240Z and knew the nissan engine to be tough. After the test drive I had to have it, the grin factor was HUGE. Plus all the other features. Towing capability second to none, roomy interior, tons of storage, fold up and down rear seats, wide opening rear doors, ect. The only minus is it steers like

I have had my Titan for 3-months now and I keep expecting to find something I do not like about the truck. Nothing yet!! This a fun truck to drive. It has awesome power at all speeds. I have had my boat on and come up to 3/4 and 1 ton pulling trailers or boats and you can pass them with with tons of power left over. It also sounds great just running around town. Nice mellow tone.

MAN! I love this truck! Mine is silver with leather! Looks GREAT! Fun to drive! I tested all the others and it was an easy decision! I have had other NISSANs and never had any problems. I hope this truck is just as good! With all the features, the TITAN is 4 or 5 "K" cheaper and you know the resale will be much better than the others! Overall, I am sure that the TITAN will make my buddies at work who bought Tundras think again as I seriously have to question their judgement! WOOOOOOOOO!

  • Great truck - 2006 Nissan Titan

I bought this truck new in 2006, and have loved it ever since. Had to replace the front rotors and brakes under warranty, so Ill be watching that, but otherwise, no problems. We drive it every day, but have tried to keep the overall miles low. This vehicle does it all - SUV, car, truck all in one with TONS of power. Gas mileage isnt great, but isnt much worse than many smaller SUVS. Blows the Chevys, Fords, and Toyotas away in every category.

It is an 08.5, I looked at all the others and was set on the Toyota, but the full crew cab had a poor 5.5 foot bed. What would you do with that? So my wife pointed me to look at the Nissan, and I have yet to look back, it has just turned 12000 miles, and I Like It, the fuel mileage is good between 15 and 17, 60% highway. I lost 3 mpg from my old Toyota Tacoma but gained so much more load and towing ability. With the LB there is room for the ATV, gear, and the Deer. The LE is great too and all the comforts someone could ask for. Good job Nissan.

Traded in a 2004 dodge ram 2500 with a hemi and I thought no truck could replace it, but the dodge hemi has no low end power like the nissan titan.

Truck is a 2008.5 that I use for daily driving and towing a 4000+ LB boat around. I was comparing this truck to the 1/2 ton GMC and Tundra but I picked the Nissan after test driving all 3 because of the Titans interior and exterior looks and feel. The leather seats look to be very high quality plus the dash controls and gauges are more modern looking, well placed, and practical. The performance of this truck will put a smile on your face anytime you feel the need. Gas mileage is not great but I knew that when I bought this truck. The only problems I had or have is that the rear underseat storage container squeaks and the tire pressure alarm lit up and would not reset until 40psi was used.

  • Been a great truck for 2.5 years now! - 2008 Nissan Titan

This is an update to my review posted about a month after purchase. The truck has been awesome. I did ding it 1 for build quality because the truck is actually built incredibly solid, however the paint is terrible. If someone looks at it wrong it will scratch. I take good care of my truck but yet it has scratches everywhere. Aside from that has easily been the best car Ive ever owned.
