This Year's Model Updates:

The Maxima has been (controversially) redesigned, providing more power, more room and more amenities to the luxury/performance sedan buyer. Key among the improvements is 222 horsepower from the standard V6, a boost in rear-seat legroom and an available 200-watt Bose audio system.

Pros:
  • Silky and powerful V6 engine, sports car moves, room for the whole family.
Cons:
  • Odd styling details, high price, rough ride quality with SE suspension.

I expected this car to be reliable but i have had to change a lot with the coils and the sensors. It does have impressive performance and from just a visual perspective it is a beauty, but it shouldnt have that many problems.

Leased this car originally & it has been such a great car, I bought it a few months before lease was up. This is the only car Ive ever wanted to buy after leasing it! Love the handling, comfort& power. I like a car that will jump out in traffic when necesary, & accelerate quickly when needed - this car does both very well. Even though GXE was the base model, it has many extras that I really appreciate. It feels like a luxury car, & is a great value for the price. It has been very reliable & weve had absolutley no problems,. Just replaced original tires at 39K miles, & have not needed to do anything else other than scheduled maintenance.

  • It was great...what happened - 2000 Nissan Maxima

This was a great car for the first two years that I owned it. But as the miles have racked up it really hasnt help up like other Nissans Ive had. There are all sorts of nasty sounds that this car makes when accelerating and the transmission just doesnt like to be driven at anything over half throttle or itll bang around or not shift at all. Lots of pinging. The stereo has broken. The A/C is noisy. Just stuff I wouldnt expect from a Nissan. Yes...Ive had it in and out of the dealer and mechanics. Theyve replaced things...only for them to break again. Definite disappointment. Should have bought a 99.

  • High performer, needs a little TLC - 2000 Nissan Maxima

This car has been a high performer. The car is 7.5 years old and has 97000 miles on it. It feels like it still has a lot left. I cant imagine why people pay twice the price for european cars. However, the exhaust (not just the muffler and pipes) system is a little too complex to be as reliable as it should be. The Dealer told me to use premium gas, but could not convey the technical reasons. So maintenance costs are higher than a Camry or Accord, but this car performs a lot better.

After driving a 95 f150 for a while it was a pleasure to drive this car, the fuel mileage was way better, and the performance was outstanding. My only complaint is that it doesnt look the part. the "Bose" sound system is incredible. i wish we had bought the traction control for it cause i dont even go mid throttle sometimes and the wheels just spin away from all the low end torque. This car is an excellent daily driver after driving a 3 ton brute every where. But i would highly recommend this car for anyone who wants a thrill, with an above average fuel economy.

  • Wonderful car... when it works - 2000 Nissan Maxima

Bought the car 2 years old and have had a constant stream of problems. Over four years of ownership I have invested $3-4000 NOT including $3000 worth of tires and brakes, and I still have close to $2000 of repairs outstanding. Im never buying another Nissan. A list of things repaired include transmission, daytime running lights module, heater control electronics, air temp sensor, exhaust temp sensor .

I have fallen in love with this car. This is the first car i have owned that i can realistically see myself with 5-7 years down the road, and even longer. I am a tall guy, 65 and this car offers me TONS of leg room. Im not a big fan of the Bose, so i replaced that with a juicy 800 watt system, the paint is a little thin, but the engine, the beautiful SE gauge cluster and the Auto Up/down mirror makes this car awesome.

  • A Nissan Surprise - 2000 Nissan Maxima

My wife and I got this car used with 18K miles. For three years we loved the car. Great acceleration, comfortable, decent mileage, and WAS fairly reliable. At 70K miles we started having problems with the vehicle starting. After 5 (!) trips to the dealer the extended warranty we purchased is proving to be a life saver. In the past month they have replaced the starter, battery, fuel pump, MAF sensor (3x), and it still has cold start problems as well as engine stalling problems on accelleration. The most frustrating part is that the DEALER cannot figure it out. I have been in a Mazda for a week (the warranty covers a rental) and Im about ready to dump the Maxima for a new Mazda6!!!

Bought this car and it did fine for a while. Then problems started occurring. Read online about symptoms and found TSBs about all of the problems. Transmission had to be replaced and coils went out, thankfully during the warranty. Does fine today, except for a few things. The SES light is always lit for evap problems. It rattles so bad, that you cant even attempt to fix it. The Bose system is terrible.
