This Year's Model Updates:

The all-new third-generation 2002 Altima represents a total revision and rethinking of Nissan's midsize sedan -- it brings a level of design and performance that currently does not exist in its class. With a choice of a 240-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 or 175-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder and an all-new four-wheel independent suspension, the Altima offers spirit with state-of-the-art technology. An aggressive new exterior design with increases in all major dimensions and a driver-oriented interior with myriad convenience and luxury features set the Altima apart in the highly competitive sedan marketplace.

Pros:
  • Sports car power in a midsize sedan body, high level of features, distinct new shape.
Cons:
  • All-new design could mean first-year teething problems and dealer mark-up.

A new car shouldnt have this many issues. 1)When it snows, this car slips and slides everywhere. (Its also bad in the rain.) 2) The tires make this horrible *loud* noise, especially around 60-70 mph. 3) Ive been stranded at least 5 times because the car doesnt always start in the cold. 4)The window doesnt always close if the temp is over 90 degrees. 5)The rearview mirror dimmer failed and had to be replaced. 6)My airbag light is flashing - and even though I brought it to the dealer, I only found out by reading other reviews here that it was a recall! 7)When you fill the gas tank, the gas sloshes back and forth whenever you stop or turn.

  • Not worth the money - 2002 Nissan Altima

If the Altima truly wants to compete with the Accord and the Camry, then Nissan has to stop adding on all the extras, that already come with on the Accord and Camry. I love the engine and the color but thats about it. The BOSE system that came in most of the pewter colored cars that had the other features I wanted is definitely not worth the extra $800. I paid for it.

  • My Review - 2002 Nissan Altima

I got my 2002 Altima because my 2000 Altima was a lemon. The Dealership was great in working to buy back my car. The 2002 overall is just fair. I have an annoying rattling sound coming from dome light that I have to take back to the dealershio again (second time) to fix. The design of the exterior is beautiful. Renault (parent company) is showing its crappy history of not paying attention to build quality & detail.

  • Disappointed - 2002 Nissan Altima

Overall I have been disappointed with this vehicle. When it is running I would say it is a good car but I have had so many mechanical problems that I rarely get to see how fun it can be. At times it seems this car has been in the shop more than it has been on the road. I have had it die on me in rush hour traffic 4 times, had the struts and rotors replaced within a year of buying it, and now I have to replace the catalytic converter and header pipe. The shifter bezel has come apart on me for the third time and my headrest cover continues to come apart. I purchased this car thinking I would get a reliable car to get me to and from school and work but all it has done is let me down.

  • Very Unhappy - 2002 Nissan Altima

If it drove as good as it looks, I would be very happy. My stick grinds into 2nd and 3rd and the dealer says its normal. The car also vibrates a great deal from external noise (other cars, trucks, etc..) The vibration is strong in the stering wheel, pedals, and stick. I want my old car back.

  • lacking quality that it should not be - 2002 Nissan Altima

I bought this car brand new in 2002. I have had issues with the quality of exterior since day one. I had excessive wind noise on the dirver side come to find window stripping done incorrectly and now the door creaks when opening & closing. Door to gas tank, the hinge bent and the door has never worked properly and the dealer could have cared less. Brakes began squealing around 20,000 and have not stopped despite changing brake pads. Very disappointed with the quality of my first Nissan and I will go back to Honda for my next car.

Two months into the second year of ownership, the car started to burn oil. Nissan replaced the engine block. Next, the clutch would not disengage. The car went to the shop and Nissan adjusted the clutch. This helped for about one month. Next, the car stranded my wife on the side of the interstate. Dealership towed the vehicle to their shop. They then replaced the Clutch master cylinder and seals. Now you can feel the bearings grinding through the clutch pedal. Today, the dealership will get the car back for more work. This car has been driven more by Nissan than by me or my wife. I intend on asking Nissan to replace the whole car.

  • Not Having Fun Anymore! - 2002 Nissan Altima

The cars engine performance is superb and very responsive even with the A/C on. Lots of cheap plastic. Gear shift console broke in the first week (it was held together by DUCT TAPE inside) and the dealership still does not have the replacement part. Shifting gears is a bit harsh. Wind noise is very loud esp. from the sunroof. Some other items are also defective. I expect to be going back and forth to the delearship at least four more times before everything gets fixed. If my Honda Accord had this cars engine I would not have thought of trading it in for this one. The car is fun to drive, but thats just about it.
