Overview & Reviews
Mitsubishi has built its brand in the United States with a selection of cars and SUVs that tend to offer above-average performance and style. The parent company has its roots in producing commercial vehicles for its home market of Japan.
A Japanese word meaning "three diamonds," Mitsubishi was founded in by Yataro Iwasaki, a descendant of samurais, in the early 1870s. The company's initial focus was on shipping, but it quickly diversified into areas such as mining and ship repair. In 1917, Mitsubishi unveiled the Model A, Japan's first series production passenger car.
It wasn't until 1960, with the launch of the compact Mitsubishi 500, that the company began producing passenger vehicles on a large scale. That decade also saw the launch of other Mitsubishi light passenger vehicles like the 360 Van and 360 Pickup. The company also distinguished itself on the racetrack during this decade, taking top honors in Japan's Grand Prix.
Mitsubishi's automobile production arm was officially spun off into a company of its own with the establishment of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation in 1970. The company's Colt made its way to American shores in 1971, the same year in which Chrysler purchased a 15 percent stake in the new company. However, the Colt wasn't sold under the Mitsubishi name, but rather under the Dodge brand, reflecting Chrysler's interest in the company. By the end of the decade, Mitsubishi was producing more than 1 million cars per year.
In 1982, Mitsubishi began selling cars in the U.S. under its own name. Through the '80s it offered a variety of cars for the states, including the subcompact Mirage, turbocharged Starion sports car and midsize Galant sedan. Mitsubishi hit its stride in the '90s, thanks to the popularity of the Eclipse sport coupe and 3000GT sports car in the U.S. and the turbocharged Lancer Evolution in other parts of the world.
Chrysler made the most of its partnership, as it used Mitsubishi platforms under many of its models. The Eclipse, in particular, was a key vehicle produced by the Diamond Star Motors partnership. In 1998, Chrysler merged with Daimler-Benz to become DaimlerChrysler. Mitsubishi's partnership continued with DaimlerChrysler for a few years but was financially terminated by 2003.
The new millennium has been a struggle for Mitsubishi. Its vehicles have grown stale with consumers and sales have wavered. At one point the company was forced to admit that it had systematically covered up vehicle defects in Japan. On the upside, though, the company's compact, high-performance sedan, the Lancer Evolution, has been a continuing success in the United States. Going forward, Mitsubishi plans to revitalize its brand by developing environmentally friendly vehicles (such as its all-electric "i" hatchback) that are still fun to drive.

Best Small/med. size SUV out there!! - 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander
By Serge - September 1 - 3:40 amPurchased this Canadian version model LS AWD V-6 and realize it is the Best SUV that I have driven! It is so smooth and comfortable on the road, you think you are driving a sport sedan. You dont even need to floor it when passing 3-4 slower vehicles on the highway, it surges with such authority and speed...the engine revving sound will please your hears! Consumption: Did 9.6 litres for 100 kilom. on the highway at around 110-115 kilom. Love this truck!!

One of the top cars for me - 2004 Mitsubishi Diamante
By jivko atanassov - August 31 - 8:00 pmI didnt want to buy the Diamante initially because of size or fuel scares. The Diamante has surpassed all my expectations, the car is luxurious, lots of standard extras sometimes I need some engine power to get out of difficult road situations. This car has all the power needed and then some. The traction control has saved me a couple of times also. ABS is also there. The gets 20.5 mpg average. And this is a luxury full size sedan with 3.5 liter engine. I got it with all extras for less money than the added cost for the same extras alone in another brand. Go figure. Nice product, poor marketing. For a family of four it is a perfect car And if I have to chose again now? Yes!!!

Montero - 2005 Mitsubishi Montero
By CLALawDog - August 30 - 12:56 pmThis is my second Montero. I have driven SUVs most of my adult life and the Montero is, by far and away, the best. There are so many SU-wanna-a- bes on the market that few true 4WD SUVs are left to compare. However the Toyota, Jeep, Nissan, and Mitsubishi are the top of the class. If you truly want or need a 4WD, stick with one that has driver-selected 4WD, not automatic all wheel drive. That is nothing more than a sales tactic and cost enhancement.

I am IN!!!!!!!! - 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor
By R-you-In - August 30 - 10:00 amThe search for a good CAR/SUV has come to an end. What a frustration those other guys give. When the features are there the price is high, when the price is low the features are gone. This has it all.

surprising contender - 2005 Mitsubishi Endeavor
By elenagracia - August 28 - 10:43 pmI did quite a bit of research looking for my first SUV, and I wasnt sure I was going to be able to find one without making the jump to the luxury class -- and luckily, I found the Mitsubishi Endeavor. This is a incredible amount of car for the money, and it is not your standard SUV box. Outstanding reliability, distinctive styling inside and out, and solid performance make this a serious contender for SUV shoppers. The Limited editions leather seats and premium audio system make this a posh ride, and the AWD lets me take this anywhere -- sand, snow, you name it. After putting almost a 1,000 miles on it in 10 days, Ive put it through its paces. This truck is definitely worth checking out!

I love /miss my galant - 2002 Mitsubishi Galant
By cedest - August 28 - 7:35 pmI bought my 02 mitsubishi galant back in 2011 and it was by far the best car ive ever owned. We got ours from Vern Eide in Sioux Falls, SD and it had about 130,000 miles on it. The only weve had to replace in the last 3 years was a radiator hose about 6 months after buying and then just in the last 2 months had to replace the cv axle on the passenger side but that may had something to do with the way my husband drove it. Up until the accident i just had in the last week in which there wasnt nearly as much damage as there shouldve been, the car ran perfectly even during the -50 degree weather we had this last winter. It only didnt start once! I will miss my car i certainly recommend it

I love it! - 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer
By lancerchic - August 28 - 7:20 amI have loved this car from the moment I test drove it. It is a lot of fun to drive, and I love the sporty look. I have taken this car on all kinds of long road trips, and it has never failed me. I like the feeling that I am driving a sporty car, but that I still have 4 doors and room to fit passengers and cargo, as opposed to a 2-door sports car that you cant fit anything in besides the driver. Highly recommended!
