Model Overview:

Most people know that Mazda builds sporty cars. But for some, it's the company's history of building true sports cars with lightweight rotary engines that sets it apart from the competition. The Mazda RX-8 was one of these models, and it enjoys the distinction of being the only one with a four-door configuration, providing reverse-opening rear access doors and a genuinely accommodating backseat. Sold from 2004-'11, the RX-8 didn't change much during its lengthy run.

The heart of the Mazda RX-8 is a 1.3-liter rotary engine with a thrilling 9,000-rpm redline: that is, if you can find one with the six-speed manual transmission. The available six-speed automatic was limited to 7,500 rpm, yielding about 10 percent less horsepower. With either transmission, torque from the rotary engine is very modest, and shoppers should note that this engine is known for both significant oil consumption and poor fuel economy. But with its perfectly balanced weight distribution, sharp steering and svelte 3,000-pound curb weight, the rear-wheel-drive RX-8 is one of the best-handling cars ever made.

The 6 speed manual is a great car, although if equipped with the navagation system, you can easily bump the NAV. controls while shifting. the handling is almost as good as the older rotary, the 93-95 RX-7. Owning both, I prefer the twin turbocharged 2 seater RX-7 anyday (even with reliability issues). But nonetheless an exciting car to drive. It gets stares.

The rx8 is truly a fun car to drive. It gves you a sense of youth as you rev the rpms up to 8000. The steering is fantastic and I dont miss my bmw 740 at all! The price is amazing, buy it now!

  • Always wanted a Wankel engine - 2004 Mazda RX-8

Always wanted to have a Wankel car, like NSU Ro80, but those old timers got now very expensive. Then RX-8 came in sight. Drove it in Dec. 2003 and ordered it. My heart really beats faster when entering this car, even after nearly one year. Never wanted a two seater, because I have two kids. I really love this car. And it corners perfectly, accelerates like only a Wankel can do, smooth and constant. Ever had a test drive? Youll be missing something! By the way, oil consumption with 0.3l/1000km is really low for a Wankel engine.

  • Great Car lots of Fun - 2005 Mazda RX-8

The car is very fun to drive, I use it as a daily driver it is very comfortable with a stiff ride. The fuel economy is not good for a bit after about 2500 - 3500 miles there is a big difference and the milage gets better.

  • Bad rap - 2004 Mazda RX-8

All Ive owned are fast cars, of every type. If I could change one thing about the car, I would give it more power, in fact Im considering turbo charging it. Handling is perfect and tight, the car is a blast to drive, and it runs smooth as butter. I have had absolutely no reliability issues with my car, and I hit the 9000 RPM mark on every trip I take, every day. I highly recommend this car to all those who enjoy driving.

  • 2005 Mazda RX8 Shinka - 2005 Mazda RX-8

I bought my 05 Mazda RX8 Shinka April 11, 2005 after selling my 2001 SVT Mustang Cobra in March. The Shinka does not have enough torque like the Cobra did but holds the road substantially better than the Cobra. Its an all around fun car & I would recommend it to all age groups.

  • Cruisin Hawaiian style - 2004 Mazda RX-8

Fun car to drive. Sprots package with auto trans. Lots of positive comments reagarding styling. Unusual layout of interior gauges and switches, but workable. Car is rock steady at speed and highly maneuverable and responsive. Air contioner is a bit anemic and could be colder as well as quieter. Ride is firm and reassuring, but not uncomfortable. Gas mileage is fair(18mpg), but could be better.

I have test driven most sports cars out there, BMW, Nissan, Honda, Chrysler, etc and found the madza rx8 is the best bang for the buck. Great design, great features, excellent audio system, and fun to drive, too fun almost. Every day I DONT drive the car, I am sad!

Ive had my RX-8 for a little less then a week now and I absolutely love it!! The style originally caught my eye, but the way it handles and the power is what finally won me over! I didnt think anything could get me out of my Camaro, but the RX-8 sure did it. Love the velocity red with leather interior.
