Model Overview:

Most people know that Mazda builds sporty cars. But for some, it's the company's history of building true sports cars with lightweight rotary engines that sets it apart from the competition. The Mazda RX-8 was one of these models, and it enjoys the distinction of being the only one with a four-door configuration, providing reverse-opening rear access doors and a genuinely accommodating backseat. Sold from 2004-'11, the RX-8 didn't change much during its lengthy run.

The heart of the Mazda RX-8 is a 1.3-liter rotary engine with a thrilling 9,000-rpm redline: that is, if you can find one with the six-speed manual transmission. The available six-speed automatic was limited to 7,500 rpm, yielding about 10 percent less horsepower. With either transmission, torque from the rotary engine is very modest, and shoppers should note that this engine is known for both significant oil consumption and poor fuel economy. But with its perfectly balanced weight distribution, sharp steering and svelte 3,000-pound curb weight, the rear-wheel-drive RX-8 is one of the best-handling cars ever made.

This review is based upon 1,000 miles of ownership. The RX-8 is, quite simply, the best performance automobile Ive ever driven. The handling is nothing short of superb. It drives like a race car, and once you learn to deal with the unique power curve of the rotary engine, produces a speed-thrill every time you crank it up. It is very comparable to European exotics that cost a great deal more money, and at an average US$30K price point, its the greatest enthusiast car bargain ever sold. Go test drive one right now; you will not be disappointed.

When I traded in my RSX type-S I thought I would regret it, but I love my RX-8, recalls and all. Yes, it has bad mpg and has to be wound up to move but it is a sports car I that is what one should expect. This is the best ride of any sports car for the money. I only drive back and forth from work with the rare trip out of town, but this car always makes it enjoyable, even though it takes it longer to warm up than drive to work. I would suggest this car to anyone who is looking for more than basic transportation. This is a very enjoyable car that can easily be your only car.

The Mazda RX8 is not a car for everyone as it has a 1.3L rotary motor in it. But if you are looking for a well balanced, excellent handling decent accelerating sports car then this is the one for you (although its not a true SC since its got 4dr). The best 0-60 Ive done is 5.9sec launching at 5k and no roll out on Perli Zeros. The Renie motor more reliable then the 20B was, however do to no forced induction the motor losses a bit of tq and a few hp. But no need to worry as she makes up for it in the corners. This is a true lux sports car for a very well equipped price of 25k with heated seats 6spd man 6disc cd changer and many more options. Drive one just know the limits of the motor.

Excellent car, well built, fun to drive, and beats out any cars handling for the price range. Crash tests show outstanding ratings, and the 2 door looking, 4 door design is innovative. Power is great in the high RPM band, but the automatic is a little slower that I would have liked, however this 1.3 ltr. has more pull than my 3.8 ltr. V6 Mustang.

The sheet metal of this car is definitely a matter of taste. Anything passionately designed is bound to have its critics. Whether its beautiful or ugly, one certainty is that it turns heads all the time. I have two kids and they are perfectly comfortable in the rear seats. We have another "blue jeans" car for all the hauling. However, this car is fine for 80% of everyday duties. Handling is extremely forgiving. Its easy to drive fast. The engine needs a little more attention than a regular piston engine, but treat is right and it will reward you with many grins. Critics complain about the lack of torque. But, the torque is spread over a wider powerband, making it less temperamental.

Wow! This car is AWESOME!! I absolutely love it. Why the sixth gear? 100 MPH in 4th is enough for me. The styling is great and the interior is comfy and classy. My wife does not like the orange display, but fine for me. Silver really shows off the car. Cant wait for aftermarket to get it back to 250 horses. Would recommend for anybody who like to drive fast and does not want a beemer. Very satisfied!!

I love my new RX8! This is definitely a drivers car. Great handling and great looking! I almost get distracted by the number of people who hang out their windows to get a better look at my car. Great car for the money!

I absolutely love everything about this car. It handles unbelievably and will take most cars on a winding road. The high revving engine is non- stop fun. A little more torque off the line wouldnt be the worst thing though.
