Model Overview:

Most people know that Mazda builds sporty cars. But for some, it's the company's history of building true sports cars with lightweight rotary engines that sets it apart from the competition. The Mazda RX-8 was one of these models, and it enjoys the distinction of being the only one with a four-door configuration, providing reverse-opening rear access doors and a genuinely accommodating backseat. Sold from 2004-'11, the RX-8 didn't change much during its lengthy run.

The heart of the Mazda RX-8 is a 1.3-liter rotary engine with a thrilling 9,000-rpm redline: that is, if you can find one with the six-speed manual transmission. The available six-speed automatic was limited to 7,500 rpm, yielding about 10 percent less horsepower. With either transmission, torque from the rotary engine is very modest, and shoppers should note that this engine is known for both significant oil consumption and poor fuel economy. But with its perfectly balanced weight distribution, sharp steering and svelte 3,000-pound curb weight, the rear-wheel-drive RX-8 is one of the best-handling cars ever made.

  • The 8 is great - 2004 Mazda RX-8

Traded a 2002 Acura RL for this little red RX-8 w/Grand Touring Pkg. Gave up some luxury, but am having a blast driving it. Not a day goes by when someone doesnt ask me about the car. My RL never got this kind of attention.

Unique, clever design throughout. Wonderful rich-looking interior (no cheap plastic crap). Mazdas design team really broke the mold and came up with a car that stands out in looks, performance and style. Highly recommend.

  • One Excellent Car! - 2004 Mazda RX-8

Great futuretro styling makes it uniquely beautiful to look at from every angle, both inside and out! Quality fit and finish, and of course top notch rotary performance make this one stand out from the rest! She closely resembles a magnificent thoroughbred. Maybe a little hesitant out of the starting gate, she makes up for it in the stretch with smooth linear acceleration. On the road handling inspires confidence with quickness and agility. For unqualified driving enjoyment, elegance, agility, and styling there is very little competition at this price! Comfort for my 6 frame is very nicely accomodated in the front, and relatively adequate in the back.

This is a true sports car, the sound is zoom zoom. It handles like a dream, with space for four adults and a trunk. Gas mileage and the fact you need hi test is the only downside. But based on the purchase price compared to the rest out there its worth it

  • Love/Hate Relationship - 2004 Mazda RX-8

I bought my RX-8 about a month ago. I LUV this car. It is so much fun to drive. I live in Texas, and not many people know what it is..It is funny to see people watch my car, there are some major downsides to owning this car though. 1. The gas milage SUCKS 2. The automatic needs more horsepower. 3. taking care of the engine is a pain in the butt. You have to add oil every 3 or 4 gas fill-ups, You have be carefull not to turn your car off right after you start it, so if you are looking for a low mantainence car this is not the car for you. I love it, so I dont mind it too much.

  • RX8 value is the best - 2005 Mazda RX-8

I purchased my RX8 in December after doing extensive research. The RX8 is the best value in the coupe category. It is the most distinctive car on the road and performs admirably. The true cost to own is better than the new Ford Mustang and I feel the RX8 is flat out more reliable than the Nissan 350Z. Plus it comfortably accommodates 4 people (unlike the new Mustang which has virtually unusable rear seating). Unless you want to reduce to a 2 seater and pay $20,000 more for similar coupe styling that the new Corvette offers, the RX8 is the best option. $20K in price difference can buy me this RX8 and a new Mazda 3s for my wife! The only real cometitor is the Infiniti G35,

  • Its not a luxury car - 2004 Mazda RX-8

This is the best vehicle in the sports car class you can own at this price point. The negative reviews you will see are due to the price of this car making people think it is not a true sports car. DO NOT buy this car if you are looking for A. Economy or B. Luxury. It is loud, bumpy and get bad gas mileage. HOWEVER!!! It is a premier sports car that will make you want to go two towns away to get milk, even if it cost twice as much. It is a blast to drive and will challenge cars you wouldnt think in handling and speed. No it isnt the FASTEST car on the road, but if you get into the twisties it the guy behind you will think it is!
