Model Overview:

Most people know that Mazda builds sporty cars. But for some, it's the company's history of building true sports cars with lightweight rotary engines that sets it apart from the competition. The Mazda RX-8 was one of these models, and it enjoys the distinction of being the only one with a four-door configuration, providing reverse-opening rear access doors and a genuinely accommodating backseat. Sold from 2004-'11, the RX-8 didn't change much during its lengthy run.

The heart of the Mazda RX-8 is a 1.3-liter rotary engine with a thrilling 9,000-rpm redline: that is, if you can find one with the six-speed manual transmission. The available six-speed automatic was limited to 7,500 rpm, yielding about 10 percent less horsepower. With either transmission, torque from the rotary engine is very modest, and shoppers should note that this engine is known for both significant oil consumption and poor fuel economy. But with its perfectly balanced weight distribution, sharp steering and svelte 3,000-pound curb weight, the rear-wheel-drive RX-8 is one of the best-handling cars ever made.

Great all round car! Recommend for anyone who wants a good car that handles and looks great or as a second vehicle for the family man/woman. Very fun to drive. Only wish it had better gas mileage ( I get 17 city and 20.5 hwy) and even though it is quick, just a bit more torque would be needed if you like to have low 0-60 times.

I had this car for a 4 year lease and didnt have any major issues with it. It was pretty rock solid, I didnt have a major issue with anything really. It did have its quirks and things that irritated me but nothing that left me stranded. I wish it had more power, but on the twisties it was outstanding. The interior styling won it over for me over the g35 at the time. The g35 had more power but just felt bulky and heavy compared to the lightweight agility the RX-8 offered. I always felt I could toss it around and maintain full control. Most of issues I had have been fixed for the 09 year as listed below. Mazda must have really listened because nearly EVERY quirk has been addressed.

  • Super fine and super fun - 2004 Mazda RX-8

I think 2004 was the only year for "mellow yellow" love the color. The exterior design is sleek, confident, gorgeous. The interior fits perfectly--Im 510", much taller wouldnt work. The gas mileage isnt THAT bad--I average 18 and get 22 on the highway. Driving something thats this much fun. I actually think, "This car is awesome" almost every time I drive it--is worth a few extra mpg. Flooded it once, my bad. No significant repairs in 5 years. Everything original 2004 except tires and breaks. The rotary engine sings like a jet engine all the way up to 8500 rpm. The RX-8 is super fine and super fun. Handling in rain is bad and in snow is downright hazardous.

Drove the Z, G35 coupe, S2000, this was the best in the class. Minor flaws though, gas is not that great but no sport cars really are. Rattle in doors, but easily fixed by dealership. Alot of room, great speed, not much torque but the car is feather light, you wouldnt notice the difference. Ive owned a Supra TT, and though the 8 is not as fast, its definitely a fun car to drive ! I recommend it highly to anyone who wants a nice 30k sports car

  • Its what I wanted! - 2004 Mazda RX-8

I researched this car for 3/4 months prior to my purchase. It was hard, but I finally got the price I wanted. The car is great! You have know idea how fast you are actually driving till you look at the odometer-45-60-90-108 mph all feels the same. Be ready for the looks you will get in this car.

For a 1.3 liter vechicle, its got some mad power. Although it could have a little more torque, its not a bad car. The interior of the car is pretty nice. The exterior of the vechicle isnt that bad. If you buy it with the rotary kit, then it doesnt look as bad. I personally like the cars overall performace. It might not have the most hp in its class, nor torque, but it has good reliability and performance. It might not be as fast, but its a car that is funn to drive daily.

  • Fun, sleek and modern-sporty - 2004 Mazda RX-8

The car is fun to drive. It corners amazing. It hugs corners and feels tight. It could use more torque on the low end for the Automatic model, but the shifter paddles give you that race-car feel and gives you power where you need it. The dials are beautiful and the pop-up GPS system and dash is well designed. The suicide doors has been extremely useful and an attention grabber amongst friends. It is amazingly roomy inside. the rear passagers have not reported being uncomfortable.

  • Pre-order - 2004 Mazda RX-8

I was one of the original pre-orders (early March 03, 3rd pre-order group). Ive never doubted my purchase. My 8 has been a fantastic auto. The much discussed "missing HP" and "low torque" are a non-issue. The stock tires (Potenza 040s) are the only irritating aspect of the car.

  • Sexy looking car - 2004 Mazda RX-8

I love the shape of this car! It looks like a expensive sports car but is reasonably priced. It handles extremely well especially around corners. My husband said it feels like a slot car when he is driving it. I get alot of lookers wondering what it is and who makes it. I have the Titanium Silver color. I absolutely love this car!
