Model Overview:

Most people know that Mazda builds sporty cars. But for some, it's the company's history of building true sports cars with lightweight rotary engines that sets it apart from the competition. The Mazda RX-8 was one of these models, and it enjoys the distinction of being the only one with a four-door configuration, providing reverse-opening rear access doors and a genuinely accommodating backseat. Sold from 2004-'11, the RX-8 didn't change much during its lengthy run.

The heart of the Mazda RX-8 is a 1.3-liter rotary engine with a thrilling 9,000-rpm redline: that is, if you can find one with the six-speed manual transmission. The available six-speed automatic was limited to 7,500 rpm, yielding about 10 percent less horsepower. With either transmission, torque from the rotary engine is very modest, and shoppers should note that this engine is known for both significant oil consumption and poor fuel economy. But with its perfectly balanced weight distribution, sharp steering and svelte 3,000-pound curb weight, the rear-wheel-drive RX-8 is one of the best-handling cars ever made.

Ive been very satisfied with my RX-8, even after the first few weeks of road fever were gone. Its still hard not to drive it as a go-kart, for it is so stable and fun to drive that you will find yourself revving it up just to hear the jet-engine noise. The 6 speed transmission is great, and you will learn soon to skip gears when driving with the traffic flow and keeping the revs under 3500. A common issue pointed in the reviews is the low gas mileage. To me it is fine. This car performs as a 6 cylinder, and uses about the same amount of gas. During normal driving I get 20+ mpg in mixed use, and 24 on the highway. Can you how me a 6 cylinder sport car that can do better?

The rotary engines are not made for light footed people. Your engines break down because there is not enough tension on the engine. I needs to be pushed, not pulled. Press the gas more and youll be saving hella money on repairs, though not in gas, but it makes up for it. Beats replacing the engine twice a year. Bottom line, this car isnt just made to look cool, its also meant to be driven hard.

  • More Power, Please - 2006 Mazda RX-8

Ive had the car now for 2 months, and ive noticed some rattles and loose body parts on the interior of the vehicle. I enjoy driving the car alot, but as much as i enjoy driving this car the gas mileage is very poor. The power is there if your not a lazy driver. I noticed that you have to keep it above 4000 Rpm for the real power to kick in, the power kicks in 2 stages. 1st at 5000 Rpm and at 7500 Rpm....

The unique design of the Mazda RX-8 is incredible. Mazda should pat themselves on their backs on their 4 door coupe. The Mazda RX-8 is top notch in performance and style. This car beat out the Nissan 350z and the Ford Mustang with ease.

  • The RX-8 is the best - 2004 Mazda RX-8

I recently bought myself an RX-8 (Red with Red and Black interior) on the 6 speed manual. Let me tell you- This car flies!! It is a very, very fast car, with a very slick look. It shifts well and is very fun to drive. Of course there are faster cars out there, but if you are looking to spend under $35,000 and yet still have the luxury of carrying more then one other person with you, then the RX-8 is definitely the way to go!

Waited a long time since I preordered the car, and am glad I did. It lives up to the hype with the handling, the ride and the size inside. It also catches alot of attention. A couple of Porsche drivers and another in a Maserati turned around to look when I drove by just to see what kind of car it was. I definitely like the Velocity Red the best, and the GT package.

I like very much this car. Although its my first sports car and I cannot compare with others, the combination of having 4 seat, cool suicide rear doors, great handling, good power and very nice interior and very competitive price compared to others makes it a great choice. I did not mention the fact that everyone is looking at me since Im one of the few in my area with this car! this is a GREAT feeling!

I love my RX-8. It handles like a dream, hugs curves and moves with cat- like reflexes. The four doors make it a great choice for small families. The tons of safety features make it an overall choice for people with small children, such as myself, who want a sports car, but still need exceptional safety features. The options are unique, yet great...and endless. The price is affordable. It is one of a kind.
