Overview & Reviews
Most people know that Mazda builds sporty cars. But for some, it's the company's history of building true sports cars with lightweight rotary engines that sets it apart from the competition. The Mazda RX-8 was one of these models, and it enjoys the distinction of being the only one with a four-door configuration, providing reverse-opening rear access doors and a genuinely accommodating backseat. Sold from 2004-'11, the RX-8 didn't change much during its lengthy run.
The heart of the Mazda RX-8 is a 1.3-liter rotary engine with a thrilling 9,000-rpm redline: that is, if you can find one with the six-speed manual transmission. The available six-speed automatic was limited to 7,500 rpm, yielding about 10 percent less horsepower. With either transmission, torque from the rotary engine is very modest, and shoppers should note that this engine is known for both significant oil consumption and poor fuel economy. But with its perfectly balanced weight distribution, sharp steering and svelte 3,000-pound curb weight, the rear-wheel-drive RX-8 is one of the best-handling cars ever made.

Anticipation was worth it! - 2004 Mazda RX-8
By wpavlik2 - January 1 - 3:56 amI have wanted one of these cars since I saw the first sneek peek in Motor Trend over 2 years ago! First impressions are that it has me grinning from ear to ear each time I get in it. I know the fuel economy stinks, but thats OK. I didnt buy an economy car, I bought a sports car. Insurance costs are only slightly more than the car it replaced. (Mitsubishi Galant) You wont regret it!

RX-8 vs. RX-7 - 2004 Mazda RX-8
By rotary lover - December 20 - 2:00 amIve owned a 2nd generation for 14 years and waited on the RX-8 for three years. I started watching the Japanese version with anticipation of its arrival in the USA. Im glad I waited because I AM IN LOVE WITH IT! The ride is smooth and fast. Its so cool to have the on-wheel operations. This car is the best on the market so far!

The most fun available for the price - 2004 Mazda RX-8
By toddman - December 16 - 9:30 pmI have owned my 2004 RX8 for 1 and 1/2 years. I have yet to have a single problem with this car. I commute over 60 miles each day, in mostly stop and go traffic. I LOVE this car! Sure, it could use more power, but for what? More speeding tickets? If you are looking for a fast 0-60 car, buy the Vette. Even with HALF the power of the Vette, the RX8 can catch and pass one on a road course. I know because I have done so. The complaints about excessive oil consumption obviously come from people who have no idea how a rotary engine works. If you dont know about rotaries, learn about them before you buy one so you will know what to expect. I also own a Mazda Millenia. MAZDA IS THE BEST!

What a ride! - 2004 Mazda RX-8
By SSSparky777 - December 14 - 2:00 amI just picked up my Titanium Grey 6M RX- 8, and what a sweet ride it is. In my opinion, no other sports car can offer the performance, comfort and useablity that the RX-8 manages. If you are in the market for a sports car - and you seek to avoid the semi-mandatory lower lumbar surgery that accompanies a 350Z - you owe it to yourself to drive this car. You will not be disappointed.
