This Year's Model Updates:

The RX-8 is an all-new car for 2004. Its arrival marks the return of Mazda's rotary engine to the U.S. market. Priced less than Nissan's 350Z, the RX-8 also offers four doors and a usable backseat.

Pros:
  • Low base price, agile handling yet still comfortable enough for daily use, room for four in a pinch.
Cons:
  • Option packages can get expensive, iffy interior ergonomics.

Lousy fuel economy and un-Japanese build quality. My avg gas mileage (40% highway, 40% 2-lane country, 20% city) was around 16 mpg. My car had a few common RX-8 maladies -- door-sill trim that became unstuck, an oil light that came on at high speeds, and the finish starting to wear off the shift knob. Interior has far too much cheap-looking plastic for a "premium" interior. AC not particularly capable on hot days

If I had $1 for everytime someone checked out my car, I would be rich. Ive literally had lots of people roll down their windows at stop lights and converse about my car. If you dont like dealing with people, dont buy the car. Ive also taken my two sons (3 and 2) in the back around for 4hr family days. The freestyle doors really help and ARE USEFUL. Audio system is very good contrary to other reviews (Im thinking they want their music WAY too loud). I looked at BMW, AUDI, Infiniti, etc... but Mazda had everything they did and you will not see this car every mile.

i have owned two rx7s 78 & 85 loved them, but my rx8 is so much better i cant belive the difference. power, handling & comfort are tops. i liked the g35 also but the cramped up feeling & road noise were too much to overcome. sorry nissan...mazda RULES!!!!

I love my RX8. It is truly fun to drive and despite what Consumer Reports might tell you about predicted reliability, I have never once had a problem with it.!

This car is amazing. I previously had an 03 tiburon and this was a huge jump for. this is two cars in one, classy and sporty. The handling is amazing and the ride is smooth. The six speed shifts quick, really fun to drive. I love this car.

The combination of performance and bells and whistles make this one of the finest cars Ive ever owned. Every thing about the car is first rate except the fuel economy (and the fact that it uses premium fuel). At this point, still under 1,000 miles and winter weather where the temps are rarely above freezing, the car is averaging about 15mpg. I have not taken it out for anything except short runs so it should do much better as time goes on.

  • My fourth RX - 2004 Mazda RX-8

This is the fourth rotary Ive owned (82, 85, 91 RX-7s) and Im pleased. The car looks awesome, has exciting acceleration, sounds cool, is surprisingly roomy, has a neat dash, and handles very well. Like my other RX-7s, cons include an interior that doesnt wear well (easy to scuff up--especially the leather, center console/cover tends to come loose, leather shift cover likely to crack), and poor gas mileage (no surprise). Also, the A/C in the RX-8 seems underpowered. A big pro is that these vehicles typically require little maintenance (no timing belt replacements, valve adjustments, etc.) so long as you keep the fluid levels topped off.
