Model Overview:

Most people know that Mazda builds sporty cars. But for some, it's the company's history of building true sports cars with lightweight rotary engines that sets it apart from the competition. The Mazda RX-8 was one of these models, and it enjoys the distinction of being the only one with a four-door configuration, providing reverse-opening rear access doors and a genuinely accommodating backseat. Sold from 2004-'11, the RX-8 didn't change much during its lengthy run.

The heart of the Mazda RX-8 is a 1.3-liter rotary engine with a thrilling 9,000-rpm redline: that is, if you can find one with the six-speed manual transmission. The available six-speed automatic was limited to 7,500 rpm, yielding about 10 percent less horsepower. With either transmission, torque from the rotary engine is very modest, and shoppers should note that this engine is known for both significant oil consumption and poor fuel economy. But with its perfectly balanced weight distribution, sharp steering and svelte 3,000-pound curb weight, the rear-wheel-drive RX-8 is one of the best-handling cars ever made.

I love this car! The car is an unbelievable value for the money. It drives and handles like a dream. It is built as solid as a tank and the fit and finish are superb. I havent had any problems whatsoever with the car.

  • ROADSTER WITH A BACKSEAT - 2005 Mazda RX-8

I bought this car yesterday after shopping numerous other coupes/sport coupes and sedans. I compared it to Mustang, Mazda6, Nissan Altima and Maxima, Infinity G-35, and a couple others. I bought the black touring with rear spoiler and all season mats. Sticker $30,600. I paid $26,000 with my trade. A 1994 ford Taurus, probably worth $500. Great deal! What a cool look, car drives like a sports car, has a backseat big enough for my 4 & 11 year old, and rear doors that are easy enough for a small adult/child. The interior is not so luxurious like a loaded Maxima or G35. Not even the GT w/added leather looked that great. I didnt think the leather was worth $1500. Overall a really cool car.

This is the most fun Ive ever had in any of my new cars. Its been 2-1/2 months and I still love it as much as the day I bought it. So does my family. A reliable, fun, attractive sports car that is also comfortable & practicle was hard to find before the 8. Im pleased with my decision.

Super fun to drive, like driving a motorcycle on four wheels. Smooth, powerful, good looking, and functional. I can enjoy a true roadster ride and take along 3 other guests.

When you need a sudden increase in speed it doesnt do the job. After being washed the car is hard to start. Otherwise its so stylish..Oh and gas mileage with high-test isnt the greatest.

The 2004 Mazda RX-8 is an awesome car. It looks good, it feels good and the drive is unbelievable. It handles the road better than any sports car Ive ever driven. I also like the fact that even though it is a sports car, it is very "driver friendly". I dont feel unsafe nor do I feel overwhelmed by the car. I would say to anyone who is contemplating purchasing this vehicle "zoom zoom zoom"! You wont regret it.

  • You gotta drive one to understand! - 2004 Mazda RX-8

This car drives beautifully and looks absolutely killer with all available aero packages and spoiler. Mine is sunlight silver metallic which is a good choice for the Florida sun. In response to someone saying the floormat slips under their feet. There is an anchor under the drivers seat and riveted hole in the floor mat to prevent this.

  • Need To Know! - 2005 Mazda RX-8

Rx-8s are good/great cars but few people know how to take care of them. They are amazing for handling and they are engineering marvels when it comes to the motor. The problem is most people who buy them, do it for the looks not the motor. Rotary is an amazing thing. YOU CANNOT BABY IT! When you buy a car do some research. Understand what your driving and what you need to do. rotary has a different oiling system and it requires the motor to be run at high rpm to keep it well oiled. I own a R1 93 RX-7 and My Rx-8 i know how to take care of them and if u listen to these words you wont have an issue. Check the oil every 750-1000 miles to make sure its full.

  • Car with Personality - 2004 Mazda RX-8

When the lights blink at me when I say "Hello" with my keyless entry, I have to smile. Driving this car has brought me nothing but pleasure. From the way it feels sitting in the drivers seat, to the looks it gets at every red-light, Im in love with my car. Have yet to pull alongside a Mustang GT or Corvette, and not have them feel the need to prove themselves.
