This Year's Model Updates:

The RX-8 is an all-new car for 2004. Its arrival marks the return of Mazda's rotary engine to the U.S. market. Priced less than Nissan's 350Z, the RX-8 also offers four doors and a usable backseat.

Pros:
  • Low base price, agile handling yet still comfortable enough for daily use, room for four in a pinch.
Cons:
  • Option packages can get expensive, iffy interior ergonomics.

  • Another dud from Mazda? - 2004 Mazda RX-8

So far I have 750+ miles driven on this car. My Observations are: 1. Poor gas mileage. Between 14 & 16 in city driving. And I drive like granny! 2. Some interior elements do not keep up with the price tag. Too much plastic used on the interior. 3. Extremely fun to drive. 4. Engine sound is unique; however, cruising its silent like a good night of sleep. 5. Above average acceleration.

I just picked up my RX8 and its still the first Ive seen in California...Face it the car turns heads! Other than the lower that advertised HP I have no complaints about the car.

Owned the car for 2 weeks now. Love to drive it as much as I can. It calls my name during the night. Mazda did a great job on this one!

Plenty of zoom zoom and room for a 64" man. Gas mileage is about 17mpg in town or on highway. Must be my lead foot. Shifts smooth and has plenty of get up and go.

  • Very fun, low on guts - 2004 Mazda RX-8

I debated between an RX-8 (my wifes choice) and a WRX STI (my choice) for a new car to compliment our Outback wagon. Id have to give the RX-8 the nod for interior and exterior styling and a little more comfortable ride, but after a couple of months Im finding the lack of low-end torque quite a disappointment. The engine has no problem revving, but you have to flog it to the limiter to keep up with traffic away from a light. Not really what I wanted out of a sports car, and poor mileage to boot! Should have gone with my gut and the STI.

the car gets terrible gas mileage, but if you could care less then this is the car for you. it has amazing handling but it is a little slow off the line. I would expect that the man. trans. is a little bit faster with better acceleration. It is a beautiful car and I have gotten nothing but compliments.

Ive had this car for little over a month now and I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT! and I LOVE IT! I love everything about this car, very nice comfort interior with very nice looking exterior and amount of attention wherever you go whenever you go. Gas mileage has to improve but other than that, I LOVE IT!

Phenomenal handling, good high end power, barely adequate at low rpm but its a rotary!Good seats.

This is the best handling car i`ve ever owned. The price is the icing on the cake.I was hesitant because of the lack of torque. However once I drove it, the thought never came back. The engine is as smooth as an electric motor and is always in the sweet spot once you get used to it. The Renesis engine and slick six speed work great together. For the money, there is no other car, and I`m 60 years old.

  • The funnest car Ive ever owned - 2004 Mazda RX-8

This car rocks! Purchased it new as a 30th b-day present to myself and have no regrets. My first car was a 79 RX7 and then I had a 91 MR2 and this RX8 blows them both out of the water. It corners like a dream and the acceleration onto the fwy gives me a smile everytime. Ive had it up to 140 mph and it had room for more - I just chickened out. I get looks and comments on it all the time. Its such a unique looking car. The 4 door aspect is really only good for lower insurance although the backseats are surprisingly roomy. No engine probs at all. Not good in the snow so luckily I have the luxury of garaging it for the winter and driving a beater 4x4. Gas mileage is a consistent 20.
