Overview & Reviews
Most people know that Mazda builds sporty cars. But for some, it's the company's history of building true sports cars with lightweight rotary engines that sets it apart from the competition. The Mazda RX-8 was one of these models, and it enjoys the distinction of being the only one with a four-door configuration, providing reverse-opening rear access doors and a genuinely accommodating backseat. Sold from 2004-'11, the RX-8 didn't change much during its lengthy run.
The heart of the Mazda RX-8 is a 1.3-liter rotary engine with a thrilling 9,000-rpm redline: that is, if you can find one with the six-speed manual transmission. The available six-speed automatic was limited to 7,500 rpm, yielding about 10 percent less horsepower. With either transmission, torque from the rotary engine is very modest, and shoppers should note that this engine is known for both significant oil consumption and poor fuel economy. But with its perfectly balanced weight distribution, sharp steering and svelte 3,000-pound curb weight, the rear-wheel-drive RX-8 is one of the best-handling cars ever made.

Fire Hazard - 2004 Mazda RX-8
By desjes - April 10 - 8:56 amGiven the beauty/uniqueness of this car I was willing to overlook the constant need to add oil, the engine flooding, the poor gas mileage, the manufacturer recalls ... that was until my car burst into flames in the parking lot at work due to faulty wiring. The entire front end is incinerated and unrepairable. According to Mazda mine is the first ... hopefully its the last.

Mazda rx-8 - 2005 Mazda RX-8
By Mike Elliott - April 8 - 2:06 amPerformance--lacks low end torque, (Mazda claims 0-60 in 5.9 seconds which is B.S.) 0- to 60 in mid to high 6s. Car still is qicker than most, and it is a blast to drive. Handling is amazing , braking is exceptional. I love the instrument panel. Get used to the high revving engine - and you will enjoy.

Jen - 2004 Mazda RX-8
By Jen in Georgia - March 29 - 10:00 amI do not recommend this car for larger people. There is also some difficulty in putting this car in reverse. I have enjoyed driving a mustang better.

Been a long time comin - 2004 Mazda RX-8
By Duroy - March 29 - 10:00 amIts been a long time comin...waiting for the rebirth of the rx car. The rotary engine is smooth, quiet and jumpy. People complain about horsepower, but its just that much more impressive. No one can handle me in the curves. Its the sexiest machine on the road for under $60K.

Richard - 2004 Mazda RX-8
By dicsern - March 16 - 2:00 amGreat handling, driving car. With the lower torque numbers, I started out driving in lower gears, ie, 3rd and 4th. After a little experience with it, I found 5th and 6th are strong gears also, but certainly not a blast at acceleration. The engine doesnt seem to lug at lower RPM, just doesnt pull out like a BMW. The car is well built, solid and fun!!
