Overview & Reviews
Most people know that Mazda builds sporty cars. But for some, it's the company's history of building true sports cars with lightweight rotary engines that sets it apart from the competition. The Mazda RX-8 was one of these models, and it enjoys the distinction of being the only one with a four-door configuration, providing reverse-opening rear access doors and a genuinely accommodating backseat. Sold from 2004-'11, the RX-8 didn't change much during its lengthy run.
The heart of the Mazda RX-8 is a 1.3-liter rotary engine with a thrilling 9,000-rpm redline: that is, if you can find one with the six-speed manual transmission. The available six-speed automatic was limited to 7,500 rpm, yielding about 10 percent less horsepower. With either transmission, torque from the rotary engine is very modest, and shoppers should note that this engine is known for both significant oil consumption and poor fuel economy. But with its perfectly balanced weight distribution, sharp steering and svelte 3,000-pound curb weight, the rear-wheel-drive RX-8 is one of the best-handling cars ever made.

a true sports car? yes - 2004 Mazda RX-8
By bmwwrkrrx8owner - May 4 - 2:00 amthe rx-8 was a true sports car that just happens to have four doors. I take the guys to lunch every friday in it, and the 62", 200 hundred pound guy would rather be in the back seat behind me than the front pass seat. you can do 0-60 in under six seconds, and if you know how to drive, you can smoke just about anyone out there. i have taken multiple v-8s to the cleaners.

almost 100 out of 100 - 2004 Mazda RX-8
By bergs - April 28 - 2:00 amDrives great and handles exceptionally well. The car moves when you move, great spring/summer/fall car. Down fall is the 0-60 speed, esp when compared to previous RX-7s. Cant wait for the Mazdaspeed version!

New RX 8 - 2004 Mazda RX-8
By DaveHansen - April 28 - 2:00 amIve had my new RX 8 for a month. Fuel milage is 18 mgp for the first 1000 miles. The 8 is fun to drive and seems to be extremely well built. The body fit inside and out is perfect. The transmission is stiff and hard to find 5th and 6th gear. This is my forth Mazda, 1987 RX 7, 1989 929, 1992 Miata. Dave Hansen

Not as good as the RX-7 - 2004 Mazda RX-8
By docnycdc - April 28 - 2:00 amAlthough I enjoy driving this vehicle, I must say that it is slightly disappointing when compared to the 1994 twin turbo RX-7. I realize that with any introductory vehicle there are "kinks" to work out but after waiting 3 years for this car I had hoped for slightly more speed.

I love this car - 2004 Mazda RX-8
By RotaryDave - April 17 - 10:00 amI love this car. The engine is magnificent, silky smooth and powerfull. Its agile and convenient. I do regular weekend road trips with my wife and infant son, our luggage and all the required baby gear, with no problems. All this in a car with razor sharp handling. Incredible.
