This is my second car, and I have to admit, the frills drew me in. I LOVE the handling, the enterior and exterior styling, and the amount of power you feel behind the wheel...BUT...for such a little car, it takes up a lot of gas!!! You also have to be careful who/what you are carrying around with you, b/c I notice a substantial lowering in mpg when Im driving around friends or furniture (which is pretty often, seeing as I am a college student). On the whole, though, if the car proves to be reliable, I will be VERY satisfied with it! :)

fun little car... dont need the 200+ horsepower on a small sedan... 130 hp is sufficient enough.. not only is it fun but has a nice "kick" on take off.. this is a car i would diffinetely keep to pass on to my teenage boy... (this is a keeper)

I have had my PR5 for over 8 months now. I was in the market to trade in my awful, terrible, never buy one, Mercury Cougar. I wanted a used car, but after test driving the PR5, I was hooked. I wanted an automatic, but manual was all I could find. However, the manual is so fun and easy to drive, that I barely notice its not an automatic. If things go well with the car for through 60,000 miles, I may be a Mazda owner for life.

Mazda is cleary the most under appreciated car company in the market. The Protege5 is in a class by itself for people who know they dont need 800 cubic-feet of space, love to drive (not ride) and can still appreciate a good looking example of automotive design (no snarling hood nostrals, bat-wing fins and exessive door ribs).

I have had my Protege5 since 1-9-04, and love it. I originally went to the Mazda dealer to test drive a Mazda 3 5 door, to replace my 03 Ranger that was stolen. After test driving the Mazda 3, I decided to try the only P5 they had left that was a manual tranny. I feel in love with it and purchsed it right away. I currently have 14,900 miles on it in less than 4 months with no problems what so ever.

  • Great Used Car - 2003 Mazda Protege5

If you are looking for a good used car, P5 should be on the list if you can find one with low miles. I bought mine a year ago moving up, yes up, from Explorer. P5 was on my short list of cars as one of few small Wagons. The first day, I took it down twisty, country road and finally remember what I was missing out on. P5 is well designed inside, seats are comfy, all the switches, knobs and gauges are in the right places, and has the right gadgets too. Engine with 130HP is not too peppy but manages to get by, especially when kept above 3K rpms. It is very reliable engine. I have the autostick tranny which was ‘03s addition over ’02 model. Smooth shifts when not under power in auto mode.

  • High Mileage and Reliable - 2002 Mazda Protege5

I purchased my Protege5 as a new model after doing considerable research. I found it to have more features for the dollar than any of the competition. After 120,000 miles, it has been almost bullet proof. The only issue has been warping front brake rotors. Coming from an amateur racing backround I can say that it handles as well as cars costing 10s of thousands of dollars more and consistently get 34 mpg to boot. The only thing I wish it had more of is horsepower.

I have had my car a little over 3 months. I bought my Protege5 out of nessecity. My car was biting the dust rapidly. As soon as I test drove the Mazda I knew the car was mine. My car has had no problems, and the ads saying that the Protege5 was fun to drive was no lie. In short...I love my car.

Purchased my Protege5 in 2006 with 44500 miles on it, only issues Ive had is a pesky ABS light. Aside from that Oil changes and a pair of brake pads. Great car from a reliability stand point, great mileage. Mazda had the right idea when they built this car should get 200000 miles easily.
