The Protege5 is fun to drive and a practical little hauler. The car gets great gas mileage -- about 27 in the city -- yet it has plenty of pep when getting on the freeway or out of trouble. Fold down second seats make for a nice-sized flat cargo area. The paint allows for a great shine and the wheels are quite stylish. I have gotten rave reviews from neighbors and friends. Great little car.

  • Practicality AND Fun in a small car!! - 2002 Mazda Protege5

I bought this car used and have since drove almost 15K miles & this cars great! I have become a huge fan of this car because of its practicality: LOTS of interior space for its overall size, lots of standard features for an 02, nice price. There isnt another car for the price that is that practical and so much fun to own/drive: Handling is SUPERB!, I get the sporty sense of feeling the road, I love to pack my stuff in the hatch for trips, its a great looking car as well with some nice sporty trims. Yeah youll zoom-zoom if you get one but thats because of its precise handling, not because of its power (it could use 30-40 more horses). I wont mind driving this car for years to come!

This is a great car! The best i have ever had! I just had no choice to take it off the road due to the frame holes all through it. Rust is very bad on the car its had alot of body work done to it! All floors, All wheel wells, Bottoms to all the doors! Motor out lived body! Motor is great! Runs fantastic! Rust is my whole problems with this car!

  • Dont know what to do. - 2003 Mazda Protege5

I got this car new with 0 miles on it and when I bought it after a test drive it had 53. Great car at 1st but then tons of issues. Now at 120,000 miles I am having the car miss when driving and it idles rough at times. One day it has issues then the next day it runs fine. I already had it in the shop 5 times and at two different places and they keep putting parts in and the next week same issue. I suggest to watch before you buy. Car is fast and a sweet ride but not worth the buck since it will cost you tons of money and the tires are hard to find and $$. Plus the trade in value is very low.

  • Great Car But Beware of Problems - 2003 Mazda Protege5

Dont know where to begin. I love the car as its a fun to drive compact wagon. However with all the problems involved with the car it is wearing out its welcome. Engine gets terrible fuel economy, shakes and vibrates like crazy, has no power, and the transmission is already in need of replacement (clutch chatter that of course the dealer cant recreate. Third gear grinds already and pops out of gear sometimes when you put it in there!?! Of course Dealer cant reproduce problem). Interior door fabric is already worn out and the paint chips like crazy on the front.

  • We love our Pro5 - 2002 Mazda Protege5

We needed a small, fuel efficient and flexible little car. We owned 3 Miatas in the past and they were dependable and a blast to drive. The Protege 5 is the same. A great all around little hauler that corners like a sports car and zips through traffic easily. And you can still haul a healthy load. We are very happy with it. Plus it would appear to be rock solid and dependable like every other Mazda we have owned.

  • Im happy! - 2003 Mazda Protege5

Bought the car in April 2003. Im generally very happy. I got it in Lazer blue, fully loaded without leather. The blue is a little hard to keep clean and so is the black interior. If you are a neat freak, go with the leather. Cargo space is not great and 2 sets of golf clubs will just fit. However, this can be solved by flipping down the seats which. Purchased with sport auto transmission. The car is used mostly for driving in traffic so Im happy but coupled with the slightly underpowered motor makes for a lazy drive. All in all I am very happy. You dont have to give up much to get a whole lot!

  • Fun little daily driver - 2002 Mazda Protege5

I was looking for an economical smaller car with plenty of room and good handling. This car fit the bill perfectly. Ive owned it for 10K miles and have had no mechanical problems at all (except for annoying clutch shudder when cold). Im 63" and fit just fine and have had 4 other passengers in the car in reasonable comfort. The wagon body style means lots of room to haul stuff with the back seats folded down. Power is a little weak but adequate for daily driving. Stock shifter sucks, but kartboy makes a nice replacement. Handling is awesome for an econobox and the car is super fun to drive. I love the looks inside and out. Luckily the roof rack is removable. Overall great!

  • Im a Very Happy Boy - 2002 Mazda Protege5

Ever since the Protege5s first came out I have always admired them for their sleek design. Every time I saw one on the road I drooled with envy. Recently, when I found myself needing a new car I found one at a local CarMax with only 21,000 miles. Took if for a drive and absolutely fell in love with it. I did a lot of research beforehand and one thing I read over and over again was regarding the lack of power. Honestly, I dont understand what everyone is talking about. Maybe it is because I was driving a pickup the last couple years but I can honestly say that if this car has plenty of pep and energy for me and I am someone who likes to drive hard and fast.
