  • Best Choice I Could Have Made! - 2003 Mazda Protege5

What an outstanding choice the Protege5 was! I love this little car. I have been a dyed-in-the-wool SUV owner and never saw the draw of cars. Now I do! I zip in and out of traffic, stop on a dime, and take turns at a speed that would send my Chevy Blazer for a tumble. Fuel economy is good, parking is easy, but I still have room to haul larger purchases. I am so happy!

I love this car and so does my 17 yr old son whom I bought it for. Thing is its so fun to drive and gets such good gas mileage and is so nimble in traffic and did I mention fun to drive and looks sport that I have yet to hand the keys over to him some 8 months later. He can drive the minivan! Seriously, this is a great car that handles and performs extremely well for a car its size and compared to many other cars. It has great leg room for my 64" frame and is peppy enough to keep you out of trouble.

The P5 has an outstanding style, from the exterior and interior. It has the capacity to respond when I demand sudden acceleration, not to mention an amazing curve handling. This car drives like a sport machine. The low profile tires help handling those 30 MPH curve at 50-60 MPH w/o a glitch. As for the interior, P5 offered a nice European styling, as opposed to the competition (i.e. the Civic, or Acura which I test drove). My hope is that the reliabilty of the P5 is as good as my Nissan Quest Van which we owned since 95!!!

I am happy with our choice. We got the car with moonroof, ABS, side airbags and alloy wheels for $16,750. Excellent value. Fun to drive. Pretty big inside, even for my 67" frame. My biggest beef is that the car has some wicked interior rattles on the highway. They drive me crazy. I will be taking it in to the dealer to take care of these. Also, you absolutely cannot store anything in any of the storage compartments without them rattling. A power point in the cargo area would be nice. Right front cupholder is unusable if you need the 12 volt power point at the same time. Handling is awesome. Would have liked a 175 hp version like the Matrix/Vibe.

  • Good car, good value - 2002 Mazda Protege5

Ive had the car for two weeks and just passed the 1,000 mile mark. So far, so good. Other than a minor glich with the keyless entry, I have no problems at all to report. Overall the car handles good and looks great. I got the windows tinted and now they look even better. The cargo space is better than I expected for such a small car and the gas mileage is average at best. I got 32 mpg on my first half tank (boy was I excited!), 27 on the second, 28 on the third and 24 on the fourth (reality sets in). The incentives Mazda offered helped in my overall decision to buy this car, otherwise I probably would have bought either a Toyota Matrix or a Pontiac Vibe.

  • Awesome family car - 2003 Mazda Protege5

This has been an awesome experience from day one. The dealership was honest and helpful to say the least, even going to the extent to volutarily give me the vehicle for under invoice so that I could take advantage of a lower interest rate. If you are in the D/FW (Texas) area Hillard Mazda in FW is a very good dealer. We downsized from a Chrysler T&C (awful vehicle : ( ). We were concerned about space, but so far this car has been a blast to drive and the kids love it. We brought it home before buying to test out the trunk space and found that everything fit just great.

  • Bought with 200k! - 2003 Mazda Protege5

I bought this car a few months ago with 200k in the clock! I previously had a 99 protege 1.8 sedan that I loved, but always wanted to upgrade the handling. After a wreck, I got the opportunity to purchase my beloved 02 P5! Everything about this car was a dream come true! It handles noticeably better than the sedan did, being a standard I feel it has a little more pick up. Only issue I had with this car is in the 02 model but fixed for 03 is the a/c & a/c light cutting out on some speeds, after reading into the problem, the only permanent solution is to wire in resistors to the climate control unit, but after that fix (about an hour) the a/c works perfect again. EVERYTHING else on the car works! Working on the motor is a little harder than the 1.8 due to different coils & the strut bar. Timing belt was replaced around 150k. I have no doubt this betty will see 300k I have absolute faith. I love love love this car. 100% would buy this car again.

  • My Mazda Protege-5 - 2002 Mazda Protege5

I have been mildly pleased with this car. I like that is has pep, and a sporty look on the inside. It does not drive well in the rain/snow/ice. It hydroplains very easily and is very unstable in the snow. There are limited tires that you can purchase for this car, and they are very expensive and NOT good in adverse weather conditions. The tires you get for the car are very soft and wear down faster than other cars. Ive had to get the wheels balanced many many times. The roof rack makes a lot of wind noise, and the cross beams have to be removed. I have not been able to find a comfortable position in my drivers seat-knobs very hard to turn.
