Why this isnt the most driven car on the road, Im not sure. Considering Price, style, performance and reliability (1 year 26,000 miles, couple rattles, nothing major thus far) it cannot be beat. My daily commute makes me smile. Few can claim such a thing. Dont buy the Protege5, I like that people still look twice at it, wondering "What kind of car is that?"

This is a great car, I love it!!! Its fun, sporty and so cool. Cant wait for warmer weather to get here, to open the windows and moonroof up. The midnite blue color is really nice.

This little car has never failed me. Its as reliable as a Swiss watch. Its the perfect car for "running around in town and to work every day". Living in Miami I use the A/C 11 months out of the year. My traffic commute is in stop & go traffic and I average about 24 - 25 miles per gallon. Folding the back seat forward provides all the space two people need to load luggage for a 14 night cruise. Sustained highway speeds running above 70 mph is not what the car was designed for. I suspect Ill be replacing the original tires at 30,000 miles. This size is an expensive replacement. I change my oil every 3,000 miles. My Bentley is painted silver and looks fantastic!

Had 2001 Miata SE. Had baby. Sold Miata. My wife and I were wondering what we would get to replace the car that we loved. After debating a few options like the RAV 4, CRV, and Matrix/Vibe twins, we drove and loved the Protege5. It is as fun to drive as a four cylinder wagon can be, gets good fuel economy, looks cool, and can support my canoe on the roof. The leather seats are supportive, the instrumentation is where it should be, the radio is great, and it has every bell and whistle we need. Mazda has done a fantastic job with this car and I know we will be pleased for years, especially with Mazdas penchant for quality control.

I basically agree with most of the other reviews: the PR5 is fun to drive (w/ 5 spd), especially around a city where you can dart around quickly, and the 6 CD changer w/ 6 speakers is so good it makes me love music even more. Mileage is OK, probably average for this size car. The seats are spacious and comfortable for all but the largest individuals, and the interior layout is quite pleasing. Previous car was 98 Civic w/ no options so I suppose Im more easily impressed than others.

I now have 85k on this car. I change the oil every 3-5k miles and change the antifreeze and air filter at the recommended intervals. Thats it. Changed the brakes (pads only) at 60,000 miles. Thats right, original rotors. I had to change my last GMs at 20k because they warped (under-designed). Kuhmo tires only cost $68 and I put 50k+ on my last set vs the original tires without much change in performance or ride quality. This is a great car and the 28-30 mpg couple with low maintenance costs makes it very economical. And oh yeah... its fun. Nimble and sporty.

  • My favorite car - 2003 Mazda Protege5

This is probably the 5th car Ive owned over the years (I tend to keep them for 8 years or so), the 2nd Mazda, and my favorite. Its fun to drive, gets reasonably good mileage, and turns and parks easily. Ive not had any issues with it, my only gripe being that it came with high-performance tires that cost major dollars to replace. But since thats the only money besides regular maintenance that Ive had to shell out on it, I guess I cant complain too much. :)

  • THE BEST CAR EVER!!! - 2003 Mazda Protege5

I love this car. Every time I ride in someone elses car, it makes me appreciate the incredibly comfortable seats of the Protege5. My car runs perfectly, drives smoothly, takes turns like a champ and is just really fun to drive. I have the standard, which shifts like a pro, although Ive heard that the automatic is a little doggedly. I love my little red Mazda, it totally rules. And my gas milage it wonderful, I work a half hour from work I only refill it an average of once per week.
