MP5 Review - 2002 Mazda Protege5
By karak - June 25 - 10:00 amGreat car for the money. Totally a head turner. I actually have people talk to me about the car and tell me that they think its sharp. Great on gas and loaded with extras. The only thing that it is missing is a giant key on the back window. It drives like a wind up toy. Leather seats and a bigger engine would make this car a perfect 10.

Protege/prodigy - 2003 Mazda Protege5
By bob green - June 4 - 4:16 pmIf you want some fun on a budget try prying one of these away from some one. This is my sixth Mazda (including a 91 Miata) so you may sense a bias. However this car is so easy to drive enthusiastically, my only regret is that I cant drop the top! Corners flat, easy to drive in city traffic. Peppy without the AC going, OK with. Cruises happily at 75 plus, no problem. Fuel consumption is about 30, but can be stretched to 34 with a lighter foot. Still no rattles or squeaks. At 50,000, feels like its just breaking in. No defects, one minor factory recall. My wife likes to sneak away with it once in a while. What else can I say? Find a good one used and drive it til it drops (200,000+)

Protege 5 was an Ok car - 2002 Mazda Protege5
By zoolander - May 21 - 2:16 amIve owned the car since new. The original Dunlop tires were worn out quickly and would have been expensive to replace had I not put new rims and all season tires on the car. Brakes, especially the back brakes have been a sore spot with me. The rear brakes have seized on several occasions and usually I need to replace rotors and brakes all around every year. That is far too frequent to be acceptable. The car has quite a bit of rust around the rear wheel wells and a spot on the hatch door. Paint has faded badly. Plastic parts, like the bumper, are of a different color than the paint due to aging and bleaching from the sun. Fuel economy isnt great.

Ride on Rails - 2002 Mazda Protege5
By Puckster - May 4 - 10:00 amSure, its only been a few weeks, but never has 130hp thrilled me so much. It kills me that Mazda cars get short-changed in the market-- they are SO well-designed... A friend of mine has had two Proteges over a span of eight years with not a single problem among them. He also got blind-sided hard and walked away from it with just a sore neck. This reeks to me of good design, which is why I bought my black beauty...

Fun - 2003 Mazda Protege5
By Nickohos - April 25 - 2:00 amI love the way my car feels when I drive it because it handles like a dream. What the Protege5 lacks in power compared to its competitors, it more than makes up for in torque and excellent handling. I test drove quite a few cars and none of them were as fun to drive as the Mazda.

I love this car! - 2002 Mazda Protege5
By Chris - April 22 - 2:20 amWhat can I say. Ive had the car for two years now and I love it! Many will complain that it doesnt have enough power, however I am satisfied with the 130hp. It out performs anything in its class so what more do you want? This car has a sports car feel while still remaining utilitarian and economical. Mazda got this one right, I cant say the same for its predecessor, the Mazda3. I wont be trading in my Protege5 anytime soon.
