Great Car, Terrible Electrical System - 2002 Mazda Protege5
By Alison - November 6 - 10:13 amAfter looking at all the other cars in this category (subaru outback, toyota matrix, ford focus), I chose the Mazda Protege 5. It seemed like the best-made car of my choices. I also heard Mazda a good reputation for reliability and service. I enjoyed my car a great deal for the first year, but then I started to experience electrical trouble. If my car sits for more than 2-3 days, the battery is dead the next time I try to drive it.

The Golf Wagon - 2002 Mazda Protege5
By Kayse Nix - October 23 - 12:06 pmUpon retirement I wanted to replace my Explorer with a sporter car. One that would carry 2 sets of clubs, a push cart and luggage. Vacation and golf were 2 things that was on my mind. I found that in my 02 Mazda Protege 5. I could not have been happier. I dont know if I like the body style of the new 5, but I love the looks of my car.

Great Little Grocery Grabber - 2003 Mazda Protege5
By C Cubed - October 21 - 2:00 amSo far we both love this little puppy. The 130 HP is sufficient for gettin around town, and it is really FUN to drive! Have been able to haul large items with rear seat down, and theres plenty of head & leg room, front & back. Better value than similar cars we considered (esp @ 0%).

loved and lost - 2002 Mazda Protege5
By Brandon k - October 9 - 10:00 amThis was my first new car and wow,not what I was expecting. The 2.0 four cylinder feels more like a six, maybe thanks to the five speed attached to it. Handling that feels like a little sports car, thats what my insurance company said too. Great audio system and overall lovability. But like most cars it couldnt handle black top, but loved ashalt and black top is where i wrecked it, thus loved and lost.

Great car at a great price - 2003 Mazda Protege5
By chumly - September 28 - 4:24 pmI bought my Protege 5 in January 2004 for $13,900 due to its being replaced by the Mazda 3. Im on my 7th year and it has been a great car! I have 160,000 miles and Ive had few issues. At 120,000 miles it started running rough and I found that the hose connecting the airbox to the intake was cracked. It cost about $90. At 100,000 miles I replaced the timing belt, belts, hoses, water pump for about $1000 through the dealer. Other than that it has been basic maintenance and has been very reliable. It now needs new struts, but otherwise works fine. I hope to get a few more years out of it.

My Baby - 2002 Mazda Protege5
By Blake - September 19 - 11:10 amI just bought my Mazda, used of course, and I just love it. Something about the Protege5 that has everything I need. Sleek look, great for towing and moving, fun to drive. I love it! I just wish they made newer models.

perfect for me - 2002 Mazda Protege5
By john dixon - September 16 - 10:00 amNot the fastest acceleration in the world, but between cargo space, comfort, quality, HANDLING, and style this car is perfect. It also comes very equipped at a very good price.

My MP5 - 2003 Mazda Protege5
By dlai0001 - August 28 - 10:00 amThe first few things I noticed is the the MP5 feels sportier, and for some reason I wanted to sit up straight. Given that, the interior felt really roomy. Definatly a lot of head room in all 5 seating positions. The bucket seats in the front feels like they are gripping you, reassuring you through turns. The 6spkr + sub stereo system was nice (even though woofer was weak), good compared to other stock sound systems. As for the downsides, I agree with the editor, but definatly a fun car until you fill it up with 5 people.
