Pro5; love/hate relationship - 2003 Mazda Protege5
By jw82 - May 10 - 1:03 pmYou know, I absolutely loved this car up until about 5k mile ago. I love everything about this car except for the poor design/build quality of the engine and wheel bearings. Had to replace right front wheel bearing at just under 60k, and now the engine is going out on it. My Mazda dealer says its either a wrist pin or rod bearing crapping out at ONLY 64,XXX miles. Other than that, this car would be absolutely perfect! If you plan on buying one of these beauties, be cautious and buy the extended service plan! Better safe than sorry

PROTEGE5 user from OTTAWA CANADA - 2002 Mazda Protege5
By Bernie K - April 26 - 10:00 amI have owned the car for over 6 months now and have not regretted it since. The car has excellent power and acceleration for a car in its class, although it does need high revs before power kicks in. The standard conveniences are superb, but A/C seems a little weak on really hot days. The handling is tight and feedback through the wheel is ample, even in winter climate.

Great for the kids - 2002 Mazda Protege5
By dcbruin - April 23 - 2:10 amBought this car for my new drivers and I have been very happy. So far, its been reliable and served them well. Great extras and good handling make it a fun car to drive. Lots of room for stuff too. The stiff suspension takes some getting use to. Its not a cushy ride at all. For going back and forth to school its great !

Protege 5 - 2003 Mazda Protege5
By Rada - March 29 - 10:00 amI fell in love of my Protegé 5 the very first time that I saw it. I love how it feels on the rode. The only complain that I have is that I think it needs a few more HP. Right now I am upgrading my “baby” and is not that hard or expensive to do it.

economy car? - 2003 Mazda Protege5
By bklynbruce - March 23 - 2:00 amI previously owned an 1999 lx protege, the car was a nice car but lacked pizzaz. As soon as i saw and took my first test drive of this pr5 i knew i wanted it.I loved the 2.0 it had plenty of juice for a car this size,i was able to zip in and out of traffic with ease, the cargo space isnt huge but really great to have when the seats are down, there was more than enough room for my needs.

P5 Envy - 2002 Mazda Protege5
By jeff203 - March 21 - 10:00 amThe P5 really is a great car! Easily the best looking in the growing small sport wagon niche. The car is an absolute blast to drive, even with the underpowered engine. If it had another 30-40 hp, Id be in heaven. It handles like its on rails. The suspension is very tight and the accelerator is extremely touchy. Just the way it should be. The car is solidly built. I dont have any of the rattles that others have mentioned. I would definitely recommend the car to those looking for something very sporty, who at the same time need that space for the kids, etc.

Fun At Last! - 2002 Mazda Protege5
By Mootarjim - March 21 - 10:00 amSo I just got my MP5. It really does handle the road just as well as youve heard, especially considering the under-20K price tag. Plenty of zip from the 130hp 2.0, and not as bumpy as Id expected. The interior is excellent, and the black cloth will stay "clean" much longer than other colors. Gas mileage is a little sub-par, but this is the most fun Ive had driving in a long time, so Im gonna overlook its thirst at the pumps. I looked at the Corolla, Matrix, Civic, and Sentra before getting my new Yellow MP5. Great car for the money, and much more fun than anything in its class.
