Needs more head and leg room. Only one problem, the ground wire on the wiper motor broke and I fixed it myself. One new set of front brakes put on at 80000. Interstate MPG up to 39 at times. Great little car unless youre a great big or tall person.

  • Love my Protege - 2001 Mazda Protege

Hands-down, this has been the very best car Ive ever owned and driven (and Ive owned 5-6 other vehicles). The gas mileage on trips exceeded the expected number. Ive hauled dirt, plants and lumber in this thing. It goes on long trips with winding wet roads and steep inclines. It has been driven "off road", and has taken a beating over the last several years (2 hail storms, 2 hits, juvenile delinquency carvings). All that and it is still great looking and great moving. Zoom Zoom Zoom. I want another one, and am less thrilled with the Mazda 3 and 6.

Ive just made my final payment. I have had not a single problem with the car. In fact the first set of brake pads lasted 90K miles and I am on my 3rd set of tires. The combination of good fuel economy, bulletproof reliability, well appointed interior, and great handling make this car a winner. If you can find a used one that has been well maintained buy it, especially the ES model.

  • Great for a first car or for a new feel - 2001 Mazda Protege

I just recently purchased my 01 Protege, so I may seem biased by posting a review quickly. However, it was one of two vehicles and the Protege was the one I prefered NOT to have. After a day I noticed the ride was smooth, the interior console was sleek, and it has a style of class all its own. For those who want a car no one else really has, this will make you stand out with shimmering beauty. I recommend this to anyone looking for more quality per buck.

  • The best handling, and fuel economy - 2000 Mazda Protege

I have had this car for the last 9 months, and I dont remember any car having such perfect handling in rain or winding roads. It sticks like super glue to the road, plus I drive it about 60 miles a day to work and get 34 mpg!

This car is sweet, so much fun to drive

  • Great handling and looks but lacking. - 2002 Mazda Protege
    By -

This car is very fun to drive. Without question the best handling car for the money. This car has a great engine and a nice interior. Small things need changing to make this car the best small car.Rear window is hard to see out of when backing up. Gas mileage could be better. Expierenced average of 17.3mpg in mixed driving. Best highway mileage expierenced was 24. Both way below the sticker. Only other complaints were build quality and broken trunk release. Build quality not up to Honda or Toyota.

  • Nice - 2002 Mazda Protege

Very nice car. Outstanding on everything. Very reliable...no problems for almost 2 yrs now. Wish it had a sixth gear!
