  • Weird Quirks - 2000 Mazda Protege
    By -

I like my 2000 MAZDA Protege ES, but weird quirks with it. Driving 65 mph - there is a whistle that screams through the dash vents. Played with the controls-nothing helps. Funny smell from air conditioning (no dead creatures found). Smell is sickly sweet. Heat also creates strange smell. Rear passengers stay hot all the time. Problems with auto entry. (Electrical?) Moon/sun roof also creates a screaming sound. Can correct by holding down the unit with hand. Shouldnt have to do that. No Umph. Try to merge into highway traffic is slow (manual shift). Hamster drive.

  • Great reliable car. Dont buy a Civic! - 2002 Mazda Protege
    By -

Just bought it but have been researching & test driving compact sedans for months! PROS -Resale value not great, was able to get into one cheap compared to others compacts -Lots of features for the class -Tight suspension makes it fun to drive -Predicted reliability -Not a run of the mill car (Civic/Accord/Corolla). CONS -Gas mileage is not as good as others in class -5th gear not tall enough, pretty high RPMs on freeway. OVERALL Car can be a bit stiff for some but I like driving so the trade off is worth it. Like I said its a drivers cars; good steering input, feel connected to the car/road & is a blast in the twisties. Will report again a year from now with cost of ownership/reliability.

  • Good Car for the Money - 2002 Mazda Protege

I have had my car for about 1 year and 10 months. The car has been trouble free. The only thing I have done is change the oil and rotate the tires. I was involed in a major accident which caused $7,600 damage. The car did perform well in the accident and the crumple zones did function properly. My only concern is that the seat broke backwards and it pulled up out of the floor. What troubled me was the Mazda REFUSED to talk with me about this issue, they said I had to have my insurance company or an attorney call them, I think that is very odd and suspicious.

FUN TO DRIVE, THIS CAR HANDLES LIKE A SPORTS CAR. ITS QUICK OFF THE LINE AND ACCELERATES VERY SMOOTHLY. THE GAS MILEAGE IS GOOD, AND THE FIT AND FINISH IS SUPER.

  • Great for a young new driver or....... - 2000 Mazda Protege
    By -

This car is great for a new young driver or a senior citizen. It is not fast, its great on gas, and it has a great look. Ive had this car for over a year now. Its an "ok" car. My dad bought it for me cause my other car broke down. I never really fell in love with it, but it got me where I wanted/needed to go. If you want speed, dont get this car. If you want luxury, this Is not your car. If you want a comfortable ride, this isnt your ride. But if you want a economy car this is your car! I recommend it for teens and senior citizens.

  • 2002 Mazda Protege ES Automatic - 2002 Mazda Protege
    By -

We were in search of a 4 door, compact car with an automatic for a reasonable price. When we drove the ES, we were very impressed. The car drove like a much more expensive car and had very good steering and road feel. Decent automatic with smooth shifts. Good brakes. Interior very nice. 1% over invoice pricing and a $1500 Mazda rebate sealed the deal for us.
